  1. Hello Britmodellers, Here's my recent effort to build the old and very basic PM Fokker D.XXI to a more modern standard. Upgrades include: -The ski landing gear was repositioned into a 'loaded' position. -The cowling edge was thinned down and rocker bulges were added. -The engine face was improved with bracing bars. -A new rudder from an MPM D.XXI was installed. -A new Ratier propeller came from the same MPM kit -A new canopy was vacformed and installed. -A scratchbuilt cockpit interior was added. -Navigation lights and a landing light were added from transparent sprue. Thanks for watching! Luka
  2. For quite a while I have been intrigued by thoughts of a Gloster Gladiator Monoplane a whatif model thrown together by Glosters when a small foreign power asks for a cheap monoplane because all its neighbours are getting shiny new 300mph fighters. Glosters were still building Gladiators so using as many parts from stock as possible a cheap and cheerful mono is produced. Unfortunately War were declared and Ruritania is invaded and cannot pay or receive the order so the Fleet Air Arm takes on the finished planes. Last night I was in my local Hobby Craft to buy some paints and I also picked up an Airfix 1/72 Gladiator for £6.50 in a slightly damaged box. I already have the alternative wing sprue from a Fokker DXXI kit and all I will need to do is scratch build retractable undercarriage though I am thinking of a different engine cowling and maybe lengthening the fuselage to move the cockpit aft of the wing. They also had an Airfix Hurricane kit for £8 which I might get for spares. All I have so far is the Airfix sprues IMG_20200211_123912609 by Stuart, on Flickr and the Fokker wing sprue from an MPM kit IMG_20200211_123927735 by Stuart, on Flickr I must say at first glance I am not too impressed with the Airfix sprues compared to the MPM sprue. The MPM is thinner harder plastic with much better panel detail the Airfix is softer, thicker and feels greasy even after I have washed it. Hopefully the two plastics will talk to each other when solvent is applied. Any suggestions welcome and if anyone has a spare NACA Bristol Mercury cowling from maybe a Bristol Blenheim build I will happily take it off your hands.
  3. This is the first of a series of 1/72 monoplane fighter aircraft I am planning to work on that were built as paper planes, as prototypes, or limited production by the 2nd Division European powers. I have always been fascinated by the oddballs, never weres and didnt get a chance aircraft. So far I have in my little stash from the Netherlands Fokker DXXI, Koolhoven FK58, Polish PZL 50, Yugoslavian Rozogarski IK3 and Czech Avai B35. More will be added to the stash as I spot them online. Fokker DXXI by MPM a short run kit of the Danish Airforce prototype cannon armed version. It wasnt successful as the pair of big heavy Madsen 20mm cannon were too heavy for the 645hp Bristol Mercury XIS engine, even though the Madsens 20mm x 120mm ammunition packed a real punch. The sprues are quite clean with only some small flash and ejector pins. I built the cockpit carefully painted it and found out it didnt fit and needed some serious emery stick action. The fuselage halves and the panel lines matched quite well but the lower wing didnt want to fit and needed some very careful work with a scalpel I am still not happy with the fit of the rear of the wing. The wing tops also needed some work to fit against the fuselage and I have had to do some filling. I wanted to cut the undercarriage legs so it would look like it was on the ground with the oleos compressed. I drilled down through the legs with a 0.50mm drill bit then cut a section out of the legs and glued it back together with brass wire to add strength. 4. MPM has released a series of Fokker D.XXI plastic kits, including one in Dutch neutrality markings, which I have: https://www.super-hobby.co.uk/products/Fokker-D.XXI-Dutch-Patrol.html At the same time, there are quite a few aftermarket resin sets made by Kora for this kit: ... and they`re not exactly cheap if you add them up. On the bright side though, Kora has thought to release two sets for the Dutch Fokkers that contain all of the above, apart for the Elevator set, but also add decals: I bought the first one, with the national markings, because it was on sale and I thought to do an inbox review for anyone, who just like me, might have wondered what was in those boxes and couldn`t find a list of contents or a good photo online. So, here it is: KORA-C7268 1/72 Fokker D.XXI Conv.Set (Dutch service, part 1) The package looks like this: It contains a colour sheet with the painting and decal placing instructions: Some basic drawings showing how to assemble the resin pieces: and the back with a short English description (the rest of the page is in Czech) for the four machines you can build with the included decals: A decal with the national, pre-war markings (the MPM kit only comes with the orange neutrality markings) and numbers for 4 aircraft: It also contains stencils, including for the propeller logos and tricolor bands and the little red cross for the fuselage that are missing from the MPM decal. As you can see, the decal comes with a warning sheet. And here are the resin parts: As I`ve said, to my disappointment, the elevators are not included, which is a pity because they come with the 4 weird counterweights (both underside and upperside, on each side) that are not represented in the MPM kit and seem kind of a pain to make. What you get is this: - the engine cowling with the exhaust pipe molded onto it. The air filter though will have to come from the plastic kit. - the Mercury engine - with a few more details than the plastic one from the kit - if anyone knows what those two pipes/barrels each side of a cylinder are please let me know. I can`t see them in any photo of the real thing. - the propeller - the proper one, that is missing from the kit. I think it is a Hamilton and the kit has a Ratier. It`s the same one used on the Blenheim so if you have a Blenheim kit that you`re not building you can take it from there. On the downside, there is no alignment tool so it`s gonna be hit and miss. - the landing gear - the main legs are allegedly too thick in the kit for the Dutch machines. The Kora legs seem about the same thickness as the MPM ones and the wheel covers are even larger, but at least they`ve added that inspection hole on the side cover of the wheel. The wheels are more detailed than the ones in the kit. The tailwheel seems significantly larger than the one from the kit, but I don`t know if this is better or worse. - that little bump (5C) from the top fuselage, behind the engine cowling, which was missing from the MPM kit. Gotta have it! - the small box (medical kit?) (4A) that goes behind the pilot`s seat. The MPM kit also has this as a resin piece. - the seat - with the seatbelts cast onto it. The kit`s seat lacks them, but then again, MPM offers the seatbelts as coloured photoetch. - the control stick. - the sidewalls and the rest of the interior structure. The MPM kit uses plastic plates to represent what was otherwise a metal tubular structure and the resin pieces that come with the MPM kit are not much of an improvement. The Kora pieces are more of what should be there, but all the tubes are united with resin flash so it`s going to take some work to free those bars. I`m still thinking about how to proceed. As far as the quality of the casting is concerned, at a first glance, I`ve noticed quite a few air bubble holes (one on a wheel, on a leg, a propeller blade and a couple of the interior tubes, the exhaust pipe etc.) that will need to be filled. Here`s hopping that separating the parts from the blocks is not going to reveal more of them. I hope someone will find this useful when wondering about supplementing the MPM kit with an aftermarket. It proved impossible to me to find detailed info on the contents before going ahead with the purchase. As I`ve said, I bought this with my own money (the MPM kit as well) and there`s no commercial purpose to this post. All links provided above are there for illustrating purposes only.
  5. Hi, This is my recent model - Fokker D XXI (IV Serje) No 5 (142) in Finish colours of 2/LeLv 30, pilot Sgt. A.Trikkonen, earaly 1942. This is biuld from Special Hobby 1/72 kit but not the scheme from box. Here is she: This is my second Fokker D XXI in my life. First I did (of course Frog) in 1973 so in age of 14 and I still have it. I only removed some dust and here are family photos: The Frog Fokker was not painted with varnish, so I am surprised that decals are still on not broken! After 45 years of standing on shelf. This was quality... Comments welcome Regards Jerzy-Wojtek
