The Russian AF has just taken delivery of the Su-30SM - to be used as a lead-in trainer for the Su-35S. Here's my conversion of the Trumpeter 1/72 scale Su-30MKK into a Su-30SM. It involved adding canards and their mounting shoulders, modifying the rudders and making Thrust Vector Control (TVC) nozzles..... I also added two pilots plus the prominent blind flying curtain over the front students cockpit.... Closeup of the TVC nozzles..... The blind flying curtain and holographic HUD..... The model is finished in the latest dark grey camo scheme now being adopted by the RusAF - together with red/white/blue stars and 'VVS Russia' titles on the fin.... Hello Everyone: This is my first post here, my first Russian plane in 48th and my first Flanker! I have done what a I could to take better pictures, as it was to resplendent I changed the gloss finish to semi-gloss and I added a picture of the conversion I used. It is a conversion I found on ebay time ago, does not have any brand on it (or box... or bag...), i guess is the copy of a copy... of a good conversion. Interior, seat, windscreen and IR were not included so I used some parts from the academy kit, seat from wolfpack and scratch for the windscreen and IR. Decals from begemont, demo flankers and PE ladder from Turbine. It was painted with water based acrylics, Akan for the interior and the dark brown, Vallejo for all the rest, including primer, varnish and decal solution (first time working with this kind of paint and I loved them, no smells, no thinners, just tap water!). I tried to build a model of the first prototype, as it was seen in FIDAE 98 in Chile. I have just started to work on Flankers and I`m not an expert so would be great to have some feedback. Finished some time ago, after a very long and exhausting build! Academy Su-27 UB Flanker Quickboost nosecone!!! Neomega cockpit, Linden Hill decals "Flankers on Patrol", various missiles, Modified Dream Model + Aires exhausts Here you are: Cool and realisticly looking exhausts.... (Aries are too small, Dream Model too big... so I ,odified both sets to make one pair of nozzles) Hope you like it! One last photo: Cheers, Werner

SU-27 Wheels 1:48 Eduard Brassin (648053) The Academy SU-27UB kit has recently been re-released by Eduard with their customary deft touches to improve detail. This additional set from their Brassin range supplies a set of super-detailed wheels and wheel chocks for the more demanding modeller to improve the detail. The resin and Photo-Etch (PE) set arrives in the usual clamshell box, and inside are three wheels, two brake hubs, front wheel guard, two scissor links for the main wheels, and a small PE fret containing additional parts. The instruction sheet hides the mask set (not pictured) which rounds out the package nicely. The wheels are drop-in replacements, simply needing their casting blocks removing. The detail is exceptional, with super-fine tread and tyre moulding detail, plus separate brake hubs that slot into the opening on one side of each wheel, and a tiny PE hub centre. The mainwheels have optional resin oleo scissor-links and a PE shroud around the axle, with a number of brake cables made from PE parts. The nose wheel slips between the two halves of the yoke during construction, and gets a super-sharp mud-guard that is held in place on the axle, and by a pair of fine PE struts that link further up the gear leg. A pair of PE side-guards are also included for additional accuracy. The remaining resin parts are used to build up the metal chocks that stop the real thing from rolling round the airfield. The resin parts are wedge-shaped, and hollow, with lightening holes further enhancing the "swiss-cheese" look. A large PE frame attaches to the bottom of each one (there are 4 in all) to stiffen and strengthen the arrangement, and give it some added traction against the ground. Two of these are placed against the main wheel tyres, fore and aft. Conclusion A very comprehensive set, which adds some value by including extra details such as the chocks and the replacement oleo-scissors. The fine PE parts will need care during and after attachment, and the shroud around the mainwheel axle will require careful bending after annealing in a flame to soften it. The latest offering from Northstar Models for September is A set of Resin, Metal & Photoetch exhausts for the Trumpeter 1:32 Flanker. One of the features of the SU-27 are the large engine tunnels housing the Saturn/Lyulka AL-31 Military Turbofans which lead to the exhausts. The eye on the model is drawn to this area as it is on the real aircraft to the multi-hued metal finish in this area. Now kit parts will never replicate the standard modern resin & PE obtain for this area. The Northstar set will make a great deal of difference in this area. The resin, metal & PE combo will take some work to get right, but once built and correctly painted I am sure it will greatly enhance the Trumpeter kit.
