  1. This isn't really my first build of 2021. It's been sitting completed since back in February but I have seriously procrastinated in taking its pictures and posting here. The build did take a fair amount of time as there's a fair amount of etch as well as some resin. I also was over zealous in sanding the nose joint and that needed rectifying. Finished as XF310 of FRADU at RNAS Yeovilton in July 1985. Its finished in overall Dark Sea Grey. The kit options are for some RAF aircraft and an Admiral's barge for an Navy option. I preferred a working Naval Hunter and found this relatively simply liveried FRADU example on a Fantasy Print Shop 'Royal Navy Hunters' sheet which has transfers for 19 single seat and 23 twin seat Navy Hunters.
  2. Well we were all sat around doing a bit of Christmas present opening, and it was all going very nicely. The odd pair of socks and some smellies etc. Then I was handed a parcel from my Father in Law, which I proceeded to open. I was pleasantly surprised to find two Airfix kits! Apparently he had seen them in a charity shop and thought I might like them. I certainly would. A Hawker Hunter FGA.9 in a fairly recent boxing, with a coloured picture on the lid, and a 'starter kit' Red Arrows Hawk T.1. I thought it would be nice to actually try and get these made, rather than have them swallowed up in the 'stash'. I was going to do the Hunter first, but after some consideration I decided that it would be good to do a modern state of the art kit that would no doubt have all the detail and perfect fit of parts, thereby speeding up the process. Well, that was how it started out. However, after pouring over lots of reference pictures and looking at other peoples builds, and then looking at the parts in the kit, well, you know where this is going I wasn't going to do a WIP, but I haven't done one for ages (done a few Group Builds) so thought it might be fun. Maybe I can get some help with various details that are puzzling me, and maybe share a few ideas about adding some detail to this kit. Frankly, I'm not a fan of these rather deep panel lines, so they had to go. I'm not going to go too crazy with the detailing, just do enough to help the finished look. So I'm going to keep the cockpit fairly simple, out of the box, just decals and some panel wash and dry brushing. Panel lines subdued with a smearing of plastic putty filler. That large hole on the top has been opened out and a little intake vent constructed. I believe that this is an intake for some sort of APU/starter. I can't find a good picture of it, so if anyone can help I'd appreciate it. I am wondering if there should be some kind of mesh grill cover over it? Thanks for looking
  3. I am modelling a FRADU BAe Hawk T.1a in the current all over black scheme. However the aircraft I am doing has white wing root and upper wing tip markings. The decal sheet instructions I am using doesn't show the underside, so I am not sure if the white area should extend to the underside. Does anyone know if the underside of the wing tips (or any other area) should be white? Also, whilst I'm asking, does anyone know the significance or reasoning behind these white markings. They only seem to appear on a few aircraft. I recall seeing a similarly marked Alpha Jet, when they were used by RAF/QinetiQ. Just wondering! Cheers.
  4. Close to the end of my Hunter T. 8M build (a Frog/ Matchbox 1/72 kitbash), and working out the things under the wings. I have seen photos of the large tanks on FRADU Hunters, and what appears to be Sidewinder rails on the outer pylons. The port station has what appears to be an aquisition round mounted. My question is: if these are indeed Sidewinder rails, and assuming that the store is a dummy training round, were the weapon pylons wired for live Sidewinders, and did the T.8M ever carry Sidewinders? I have not been able to find photos of them in place. TIA
  5. Well, once it arrives I'll be converting a High Planes Canberra B.2 into a TT.18. I have the Model Art decals and I have the Ruston Winch set from Kits for Cash (formerly Heritage Aviation), however I am still waiting on the kit arriving. I ordered it 2 weeks ago and am still waiting for it.... I have been in touch with the vendor but am still awaiting a response as to the status of my order. If this doesn't pan out, there's plenty of other options in the stash to choose from, including Hawks, SHARs, Sea Kings, Hellcats and Corsairs so I will be participating in one form or another. Mark.
  6. Having had a good trawl through the Canberra SIG site, Fradu Canberras site and an old Aeroguide, I have reached the conclusion that a TT.18 can be made very easily from a B.2. All I need is some decals, Rushton Winches and a B.2 kit. I have the Model Art sheet 72-007 which features WH887 from 1989, but just want to clarify the situation regarding underwing serials. For this time frame, is the sheet correct in not having them? I've found pics from an earlier period which show it does, but ones of the later period don't show the wing underside in enough detail. The later ones do, however, seem to support the ommission of underwing serials by 1989. Anyone happen to have a lovely clear pic of the underside from this late period of WH887's service? Thanks in advance, Mark.
