  1. Apologies for being late to the party, work commitments have meant little modelling time over the last few months. It's also been a long time since my last Group Build of any sort so I hope to rectify both situations with what looks to be the very popular choice of the 1/48 Hasegawa FGR.2, this one also being the Revell British Legends boxing released back in 2018 to celebrate the RAF's Centenary year. As I usually do, I'll be adding some after market – the Aires cockpit, GT Resin seamless intakes, Reskit jet pipes, Hypersonic canopy details, Master pitot and AOA sensors, Eduard wheels plus some others. I'll also be upcycling some parts from a Zoukei Mura kit - notably the fuel tanks and inboard pylons as I plan to replace these with the Reskit items. Ordnance is TBD but could be anything from none to AIM-7s, gun pod and rocket pods or bombs. Onto the kit. I did start this a while ago mainly preparing the fuselage for the replacement cockpit and intakes. I think this still falls below the 25% rule but if the Mods prefer, I have a few unstarted Spey Phantoms in the stash 😀 Undergoing Quality Control Supervisor inspection: Having been advised by 😼 QC that the radome was missing, after a short search it was found in the box of a stalled F-4J build! As hinted at in the thread title, my subject will be FGR.2 XV404. This Phantom is probably most famous for its final colour scheme being painted by 74 Squadron in a full tiger striped finish to mark their disbanding, although by this time it had been withdrawn from use and never flew in these colours: However, I will be going back to almost the beginning of it's service life. After delivery XV404 first went to 54 Squadron in 1969, passing to 228OCU before returning to 54 Sqn until they stood down as a Phantom unit in April 1974. Over the years while I've built several British Phantoms, I've not done an early scheme with glossy finish and full colour roundels. I'll be building her from this second stint with 54Sqn looking something like this: First up will be preparing the Aires cockpit to shoehorn into the fuselage. Wish me luck! Jonathan
  2. Group build rules. Hello Everyone... Welcome to the F-4 Phantom (U.K.) single type group build. This build is open to any version, variant of the U.K. operated airframes. These are the FG.1 (F-4K), FGR.2 (F-4M), and late model F-4J’s, Please remember it’s more about the journey than finishing so enjoy yourselves after all this is a hobby. This build will cover anything British operated Phantom related. OFFICIAL RULES 1. A 'WiP' thread for each model with regular updates showing your progress within the GB timescale is required. 2. As in all group builds any kit’s are allowed. Of course all scales, mediums, aftermarket, and other goodies will also be allowed. 3. The 25% rule is only a guideline for the build. If you have a model on the shelf of shame or in that drawer of doom. Even if it is more than the 25% you may build it/finish it in the build. I only ask that you only enter those builds in the inspiration gallery. 4. Please keep comments within these threads respectful. If you can't be nice then please be quiet. 5. If you have any issues with anything or anyone please bring it to Me. I will attempt to resolve any issue’s. If this fails Enzo Matrix or Mike or another Moderator will be involved. 6. A gallery is available for the display of un-started models completed within the GB timescale. Please limit the number of photos to five for each subject. 7. There is also an inspiration gallery for previous builds of U.K. operated Phantoms. 8. No Buying, Selling, or trading in the threads. There are dedicated locations for this. Positively no exceptions ! 9. Do not hesitate to ask questions about anything I will try to get you an answer as soon as I possibly can. (Remember patience is a virtue). 10. Last but definitely not least - Please, Please have fun ! Finishing is always nice but is not important nor required. We want you to enjoy your time here in the group build not stressing out. After all this is a hobby. Thank you and welcome Dennis, Paul J, Jabba, and Rob G.
  3. G’day all. I’ve just completed the Airfix Phantom FGR.2 this afternoon (Easter Monday). An annoying start followed by a pleasant build for the most part, I’m happy to say that this was an enjoyable project. The kit is built as XV466 ‘D’ Desperation while assigned to 1435 flight at RAF Mount Pleasant in 1991. The most annoying issues with the kit are the fit of the lower wing to the underside of the intake trunks and the fir of the forward canopy section to the nose fuselage. Some judicious plastic removal and fettling had the parts slip into place. Gaps were addressed with the tried and tested recipe of CA glue and talc. The Skyflash (Sparrows) and Sidewinders are courtesy of Eduard but the rest of it is what you get in the packet. The kit ordnance have fins that are a scale 6 inches wide so this was a must. The yellow seeker head covers on the Sidewinders add some colour to an otherwise muted colour scheme. I’m frustrated that Airfix still persist with panel lines that really are suited on a 32nd or 24th scale kit. Here in Australia you pay anywhere between $50 - $65 for this kit (25-33 pounds). Comparing kits of similar size and cost you get panel lines that are much more refined. Airfix, if you’re listening, please get your act together in this area. There has been much discussion about it. On the plus side, the kit decals were fantastic and reacted well to the Microset/sol combo. Painting is always the fun part for me. On the kit I used Mr Color lacquers for the camo greys and Alclad for the metal exhaust areas. Looking at photos of period jets and particularly XV466, the greys seemed to lighten over time, almost to the point of almost no contrast between the two topside greys. A variety of weathering products have been used for panel lines and such. You can make out the two tones of greys in the overhead shots. Anyway, on with the photos. Let me know what you think. Cheers, Mick.
