  1. Hallo, gentlemen! I am currently building an F4F-3 (no, not the Eduard one...) as a machine in the ill-fated VMF-211 at Wake Island, and a sudden doubt crept in. How were the propeller tips painted? Tri-color, Yellow, or nothing? From the well known photo of the wrecks, the cuffs are undoubtely unpainted metal, the blades are Black also at the front, but no hint of the tips can be discerned. If any, that they were left in Black like the blades. However, the (in its time) well researched YellowWings Decals decal sheet (which I am using) suggests Tri color, and even supplies decals for that (rather big... almost a quarter of fifth of the blade...) Conversely, the new Eduard kit decal sheet comes with none of that, and a glance at the instructions sheet shows that it has no indication whatsoever (instead, the blades themselves have a raised panel that would indicate the Yellow tip?) What is the general knowledge on the matter? Thank you very much, Fernando

  6. Britmodellers, I am once again asking for your knowledge. Can anyone tell me what the pod-shaped object under the port wing is? There seems to be an empty rack under the starboard wing, but I think I have also seen that pod under the starboard wing on other photos, but always only one seems to be carried. Thanks in advance.
  7. With no less then three (3, tres, shlosha, f@@#$#@$) kits on hold for missing parts (Seafang, A-26B, Typhoon) I opted for something that should be a quick build. My stash is full (if building was a way to guarantee long life - I would be a true Raelian, but most of them require a skill level I still do not yet poses in order to fully create a good build). Finally picked this Tamiya F4f-4. Build should be simple to put together with most of the time spent painting. Also pulled a resin cockpit for the kit I picked off eBay for pennies. A small number of parts, good detail and some nice paint schemes - should bring the smile back
  8. So I'm on here all the time admiring everyone else's work, insight, and good nature and humor, but never really contribute. So as I delve back into this hobby addiction, which is greatly needed, I am making myself grow and delve deeper into this art. So I will put out updates on this build of Trumpeter's 1/32 Late F4F-3 and welcome feedback, critique, criticism, or experience...jokes too. My head is thick, my hide is thicker and I like the camaraderie on this site. I'm newer and want to jump in...so thanks. I have also started a new topic asking for insight to lap belts prior to Midway/early WWII. Thanks! So here is the office. Not finished with detail and have not started weathering washes. First attempt at hair spray technique on seat, floor and rudder pedals. I am a black baser so all is primed in black first.
  9. In October 1943 almost four dozen of US a/c (20 Dauntless, 14 Wildcats and 10 Avengers) attacked the German shipping in Norwegian fjords near Bodo - just north of the Arctic circle. Several photos show the SBD-5s (no upper cowling air intake) with red-surrounded stars-and-bars and single- ot two-digit number on the fin. The well-known photo of SBD No.19 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Leader#/media/File:SBD-3_CV-4_Norway_1943_NAN10-1-45.jpg shows the plane in two-tone camouflage of Blue Gray and Light Gray - the undersides surely aren't white and there's no difference between the fuselage sides and top colour. Another photo http://www.airgroup4.com/la-plata-1.jpg shows starboard wing uppersurface decidely NOT in the NS Sea Blue (that should be darker than the sea below it), while next one http://www.airgroup4.com/leader-03.jpg shows the port wing uppersurface much lighter than Insignia Blue. Nevertheless there's still another (well-known) photo of two SBDs http://www.airgroup4.com/skomver-lighthouse-norway.jpg where the undersides CAN be white, while the sharp border along the fuselage side below the cockpit suggests later three-tone USN camouflage. So my question is whether could these VB-4 SBDs wear Atlantic three-tone camouflage of Dark and Light Gull Grays over White, introduced in early (April?) 1943? It's worth of mention, that during the same raid the VT-4 Avengers still wore Blue Gray over Light Gray two-tone camouflage, OLD insignia (stars with no bars) and OLD numbers (e.g. 4-T-11) in black on fuselage sides. Another interesting question concerns Wildcat fighters. Most sources list F4F-4s here, while (following Ernest L. Crochet journal http://www.airgroup4.com/crochet.htm) since August 1943 all Wildcat crashes on the Ranger CV-4 are described as FM-2. Also the photo http://www.airgroup4.com/torch1.jpg taken (presumably) in mid-1943 show Wildcats taking-off from the USS Ranger deck as tall-finned FM-2s (four wing guns and lack of upper cowling air intake do stay for such conclusion too). BTW what camouflage do these FM-2s wear? White number on the fin precludes two-tone Artlantic scheme, white undersides make two-tone Blue Gray/Light Gray (there were no FM-2s painted such AFAIK) also impossible. So which three tone: Atlantic Scheme One (of two greys over white) or standard scheme of two blues over white?
  10. Evening all, Having run out of steam a little with my Battle of Britain project, I've switched my attention to my main area of interest, naval aviation. I started a Hobby Boss F9F last week, but couldn't resist making a start on another couple of classic fighters whilst the Panther trickles along in the background. Having been o impressed with the Defiant, I wanted to crack open another of Airfix's recent toolings, and having picked up the Wildcat and Kate dogfight double, the F-4F seemed an obvious choice. My pair of Tamiya Corsairs have been screaming at me from the stash for some time now too, so I thought, given the similar schemes worn by the Wildcat and the Birdcage variant of the Corsair, I might as well crack open the latter at the same time. Both seem lovely kits, the Tamiya especially, though I guess that's to be expected. So, first progress, and after a bit of construction the cockpit interiors have been sprayed. Whilst not altogether interesting in itself, the answers to my questions in my other thread, and the IPMS Stockholm website proved to be fairly enlightening regarding the colours. The IPMS Stockholm page contains information regarding these colours specific to the types, revealing that my usual go-to colour of interior green was not accurate for either of these aircraft. For the Wildcat, and indeed most Grumman types it seems, a darker, Bronze green was used, whilst the Corsair had a dark dull green interior, as confirmed in my question thread. The latter is a little less clear cut it seems, but images posted by LanceB in my question thread of a recovered wreck seem to match with this green rather well. For the Wildcat, the Stockholm colour charts recommend Hu 75 plus a touch of other greens, which I was happy to ignore, as the neat 75 looked reasonable to my eye, whilst Hu 149 was suggested for the Corsair. This seemed a little bright straight out of the (very old!) pot so I darkened it a little with some of the Hu 75 and some black. Neither are 100% perfect, but not too bad I reckon, and lets face it, it'll be pretty difficult to see inside either cockpit once everything is closed up. Next step will obviously be to detail paint and weather the interiors, and I shall also set about getting the remainder of the interior colours laid down, notably that wonderfully garish pink in the corsair tail Thanks for looking, comments welcomed Cheers Shaun
  11. We've just this week received our stock of the 1/72 Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat Plastic Model Kit from Airfix! This detailed, new tooled model kit, based on the WWII era American carrier-based fighter, comes with a choice of 2 sets of decals! For more details, check out our newsletter here.
  12. Starting this kit is an attempt at regaining my interest in modeling. Lost interest due to the mad cow attack and my father having a heart attack. His time is up, he is 82 smoked for 70 years, but has excellent lungs. According to Admiral's instructions you can build an F4F-3, F4F-3A, F4F-3P and a Martlett Mk III and I think if you don't cut the fuselage you can build a Martlett Mk I. This is the first step - cut the fuselage. I am not so sure of the second cut though. I am wondering if these instructions a for their FM2. Thanks for looking. Stephen
