Braniff International Airways was an American airline founded in 1928. Braniffs were in operation until 1982 and their home fields were Dallas Love Field airport and Dallas international airport in Texas. During their operations, the company flew to destinations in North and South America, and in the late 1970s also to Asia and Europe. Perhaps the most famous feature of the airline in was that the planes in their fleet were painted in various eye catching colours. The aircraft carried such colours as beige, ochre, orange, turquoise, baby blue, medium blue, lemon yellow, In total, fifteen different liveries were used during the 1960’s . From 1978 onwards Braniff's aircraft received a new "Ultra color" scheme that called for a quiet, elegant and more sophisticated look. My model depicts the Boeing 727-100 in Braniff's red "Flying Colors" scheme. The model was built from a very detailed Authentic Airlines' 1/144 scale resin kit with F-DCAL markings and AA's cabin and cockpit decals. The red color is from Tamiya's TS-8 rattle can and the ochre underside from Revell's enamel number 88. The thin white demarcation line between the red and ochre areas was made by using a Fantasy Printshop 0,5 mm white stripe decal. Building the kit was in itself straightforward and without any problems. The most time consuming part was the masking and painting of the different coloured areas. As to the metal parts I airbrushed them with Vallejo's acrylics and AMMO's A.MIG-2300 aluminium paint. Since the ochre paint is matt, I coated it with Humbrol's clear gloss varnish.- 23 replies

Unfortunately one of my intended builds for the Airfix group build has been ruled out as this particular version dates originally from 1983. So I'm intending to build the 1/44 Airfix Boeing 727-200 in the time span of the group build. This will be one of the few 727s ever to carry British Airways livery via its franchise partner Comair of South Africa, who operated five aircraft of the type on the Johannesburg to Cape Town route. My chosen example is ZS-NOV in the "Delftblue Daybreak" livery - the only BA 727 to have ever worn this livery. Decals are from F-DCAL - I've recently purchased a few of their sets and hope that they are easy to apply. The first stage will be to remove the raised panel lines and fill in the windows...……….more to follow. Regards Mike -
This is the fourth Caravelle I've built and this time around the beauty is in the livery of SAS. It seems that I can't get rid of my love affair with Caravelles. It's possible (or even probable) that this won't be my last Caravelle build. IMHO it's simply the most elegant jet airliner ever built and the nostalgic 1960-70's liveries suit the contours of the plane perfectly. As before I built the model from an Authentic Airliners' excellent resin kit with laser printed SAS decals from F-DCAL. Each SAS Caravelle was christened with a viking name and the decal sheet gave choices for 21 different Swedish, Danish and Norwegian names and registrations. Well I just couldn't resist the temptation and I decided to build LN-KLI or "Einar Viking" 🙂 For the livelier cockpit and cabin windows I ordered decals from AA decals. The assembly of the plane was straightforward without any problems. Detaching some smaller parts from the resin molding blocks can be tricky, though. The most difficult are probably the small and fragile jet intake blades. I primed the model with Mr.Hobby's 1200 surfacer and painted first the wings and stabs with Tamiya gloss black from rattle can. The white areas were then painted with Tamiya's Fine surface primer coated with Tamiya's gloss varnish spray. For the metal areas I used Alclad aluminium. I also added some details of my own to the model.

I built a model of the Finnair DC-10-30 a couple of years ago. The plane has always had a special place in my heart. Many times in the 1980's I flew with the DC-10's to Spain and to the USA . In my opinion it's the meanest and beefiest looking airliner the Finnish flag carrier have operated during their long history. Finnair were also the first airline that started direct flights from Western Europe to Japan via the North Pole. These planes were equipped with additional fuel tanks i.e. DC-10-30 ER (Extended Range) The maiden flight of the DC-10 took place in October,1970 and the manufacture of the plane type ended in 1988. A total of 446 these three-holers were built and some 40 airlines used the plane. The last scheduled flights were flown with it by Bangladesh Biman in 2014. I built the 1/144 scale DC-10-30 model from an excellent Authentic Airliners resin kit. There were no problems in building the model and only a bit of file and putty was needed. Out of the five Finnair's DC-10's I chose the one registered OH-LHB. The decals I used were from F-DCAL. Additionally, I ordered decals for the cockpit and cabin windows from Authentic Airlines. The coroguards, stencils and engine details are from Nazca decals and the turbine hub spirals from Skyline decals. I painted the white fuselage with Tamiya Fine Surface primer coated with Tamiya gloss varnish spray. The multiple shade metal areas were painted with AK Xtreme aluminium and Vallejo metal paints.

The all white livery of the Polish national airline LOT brings out very well the elegant contours of the Tupolev Tu-134A. This jet in various East European liveries was a very familiar sight at European airports in the 1960's and 70's. In my mind The TU-134 was one of the best looking Soviet manufactured airliners. I built the model from an excellent, tamigawa quality 1/144 scale Zvezda kit. The livery decals were a combination of various sets: Avia Decals, F-DCAL and the very genuine looking, three dimensional glass nose cone decal from Ascensio. The cabin windows, the windscreen and the nose cone of the kit were open so I had to putty and sand them closed. I sprayed the plane with white Tamiya fine surface primer which I then covered with Tamiya clear gloss varnish. The metal areas are Alclad Polished aluminium. Humbrol and Vallejo colours were also applied to smaller details.

IMHO the Caravelle is the most beautiful airliner of all times. The elegant livery of Swissair suited the Caravelle III perfectly. It's a pity that both the plane and the airline have long ago disappeared from the skies. I built the model from a 1/144 scale Authentic Airliners resin kit with decals from F-DCAL and window decals from Authentic airliners.

G-BNNL was delivered to Dan-Air (hence the designation 4Q8 rather than 436) in Jan 1989 and acquired by British Airways in Nov 1992. In March 1995 ownership was transferred to BA's franchise partner GB Airways. In the late 1990s it was painted in the "Chelsea Rose" variant of the "World Image" tail designs as seen in this model built from the Daco 737-400 kit. Main paints used are Halfords Appliance White & Fiat Capri Blue, with various metal shades on the engines. Livery decals from F-Dcal, windows from Authentic Airliners and leading edges and coroguard are kit decals. and finally a "tails" shot of my four BA 737s. The other three were built in the STGB last year but unfortunately the Chelsea Rose decals didn't arrive in time - so I was forced to visit Danny Coremans stall at Telford to get another kit for them. Now that the East of Scotland Model Show is over and my Donaldson International Britannia is well under way I’ve decided to start another build. Sticking with the propliner theme my second entry will be another Roden kit, the original "short" DC-6 in SAS livery using F-DCAL’s gorgeous sheet FD144-037S I’m using the “Independence” version of the kit rather than the standard Delta issue because it includes the Curtiss Electric propellors which are necessary for the SAS aircraft. They are noticeably different from the much more common Hamilton Standards. The box contents are entirely conventional... … the Curtiss props on the left As I’ve already said, the decals are gorgeous... The DC-6 is one of Roden’s earlier kits and isn’t to the same standard as the Britannia or VC-10. The plastic is hard and brittle and likely to be difficult to work. Generally the engraved detail looks good and it’s actually finer than the Brit although reinstating anything lost in sanding is likely to be a challenge. I’m not confident I’ll finish it before November (the Britannia will always take priority) but since I was going to build it anyway I thought I might as well add it to the Group Build. I’ve got some more work to do on the Brit and once that’s finished I’ll get the DC-6 underway.

Let me just start with a warning : There's no cheatline ! Now we've got that out of the way..... ....Ethiopian Airlines are due to take delivery of their first Airbus A350 next month but I couldn't wait that long. I finished off Revell's A350 with a mixture of F-dcal markings (FD144-684) and the kit's stencils : The standard 4x4 walkaround : Of course, the "with something else" pic just had to be with one of the A350's predecessors : I'm afraid I really struggled with this kit and it took far too long to complete. (Having said that, I managed to drag mine over the finish line before Trojan Thunder did (Come on Ray ! We're still waiting to see your A350 in Finnair markings ! )) Anyway, it's back to the bench now to continue work on yet another jet with no cheatline ! (This one has a story to it and a bit of a twist with the presentation, so stay tuned) Thanks for looking. mike

Hi folks, Long time no post. Lots of stalled builds, so I tried something simple for a quick build and as a leaving gift to a colleague who is shortly returning to New Zealand. Zvezda 1/144 Boeing 787-9 kit with f-dcal decals. I figured there'd be tons of these on here, but surprised I couldn't find any. Kit is deceptively simple but very good. The engines, with separate fan blades are exceptional. The entire lower wing is a single piece moulding, significantly aiding the wing/fuselage join and the wing dihedral. The only downside are the overly shallow panel-lines, which all but disappear under paint and varnish. I replaced the landing gear with the Scale Aircraft Conversions white metal gear out of preference. The f-dcal decals are mostly silk-screen printed, with just the engine exterior decals and cargo doors on a supplemental laser-printed sheet. The silk-screen decals are exceptionally thin, like to curl up and stay put, so need some care, but survived quite a lot of abuse. They responded well to MicroSet and Sol without any adverse reactions. The rear fuselage fern is printed integral with the rear set of windows (aids positioning) but was challenging to get into position and remove wrinkles/air bubbles. Patience is most definitely the order of the day. Which I had run out of by the time I got to do the wing walkways. Oh, and to note, the kit decal windows do not fully align with the kit windows, so these need filling completely or one has to resort applying the windows individually. I found out the hard way. :-/ Paints were my usual Zero Paints white primer, white and black, AlClads metals and Alclad Aqua Gloss varnish, latter applied with a wide flat brush. On the with photos. Finished this OOB except for decals and a scratch built antenna. Decals are from F-DCAL. Builds nicely with little fuss unless you are ham fisted painting it Special crumpled sky background for pictures Build thread here

Hello all, Here is my first topic, and it is about my last model, a B727 from the new Airfix kit. I used Continental Micronesia decals. I bought them on F-dcal, and I was satisfied by the quality. I did not pay a special attention to the accuracy of the model, thus I didn't make major changes on the plastic kit (to be honest I wanted to finish it rather quickly). Yet I know some details are not reproduced (on the wings and the gears). I chose to glaze the windscreen and the windows instead of filling and adding the decals. Only I didn't use the small Airfix clear parts, but placed plastic sheet and Clearfix. Here again you will notice it's not perfect (first time I try it). Continental Micronesia was founded in 1968 (as Air Micronesia) and ceased its operations in 2010, when Continental merged with United. It used to have routes to Hawaii, Asia (mainly, if not only, Japan) , Micronesia and Australia as well as it was island hopping. The paint job is done with brush for all colors except white, which is Tamiya Gloss White. I obtain a glossier finished by spraying a grey primer (Tamiya too) instead of a white one. The paint job "pattern" on the wing is done a little bit randomly because there wasn't many pictures on the internet. I had made the 3 Pitot tubes but my little brother broke them ... Hello, I've been looking at the available decal sheets for Concorde and the F-DCAL sheet for the UK prototype caught my eye. Apart from the smaller visor windows on the first two prototypes, are there any other notable difference between these aircraft the production ones? Many thanks! Andrew

I bought this kit only a few days ago and im really happy with the progress, and the kit in itself. I did however, after getting this far, discover that maybe i should have waited with the pitot tubes until after i've added the decals as those pass right over them. --------------- This is the kit i prioritize, but i am also working on a Revell 737-200 with Air Inuit decals from V1 Decals and a Hasegawa MD-90 that i have yet to decide what livery it should wear. If anyone is interested in pics, just ask.
