  1. Hi folks, first things first - happy Easter everyone! 🐰🥚 Today on the menu is Italeri's F-35B Lightning II in its fierce Beast Mode configuration in 1/48th scale, my latest finished kit. Bought it last year after seeing the USAF F-35A demo during an airshow in Belgium. It impressed me so much I just had to have at least one Lightning II in my collection but I like it so much I aim to get the whole range. The kit itself is not bad but IMO a bit overpriced compared to Tamiya's F-35A which only costs around 20€ more than this one and even if I haven't build that one yet, it's safe to say it will be better in a number of ways. The Italeri kit is nicely detailed in many areas (Cockpit, landing gear, weapon bays, some surface details) and is kinda winging it in others (engine nozzle, other surface details) but it goes together very well and features a great many options. Sure, this also comes down to the F-35B variant, which is the one with STOVL capability. I chose to open every hatch, bay and intake possible to make it look like a Transformer. The kit also comes with some extra ordnance and weapon carts you can put next to it. Speaking of ordnance - there is plenty but the options are rather limited. You can either go for a stealth clean look or a full Beast Mode loadout with 6 pylons under the wings packed with 4 bombs (either JDAMs or Paveways) and 2 AIM-9X. The internal weapon bays can be filled with 2 AIM-120 AMRAAM and 2 again either JDAMs or Paveways and an optional underbelly gun pod. I went for the 4 Paveways and 2 Sidewinders under the wings and 2 JDAMs and 2 AMRAAM in the bays and ditched the gun pod. The build was quite easy going despite the rather complex nature of the plane itself. The problem is the masking afterwards. There is a lot of stuff that needs to go into the fuselage before the lower and upper halves go together and unfortunately a lot has to be painted in what I like to call gods cruelest joke - white. The masking and painting were the most time consuming aspects of this build. I used Tamiya's white for the internal bays, Hataka's Have Glass Grey and several Vallejo greys (and brushes this time) for all the surface details, followed by some Tamiya gloss varnish. Washes were done as usual with Vallejo and Ammo washes. The decals were fantastic. Printed by Cartograf on a very thin film and crisp as hell. Even the smaller stencils are still readable. They were easy to work with and a responded very well to decal softener. In the end the whole thing was sealed with gloss varnish. All in all it was a fun kit and I'm quite pleased with the result (although I made a few mistakes while painting which I noticed too late to be corrected) and I learned a few lessons for any future F-35 project and how I'm going to tackle a few things next time to make it even more enjoyable. I also found the box of the PC sim JSF - from 1997. That puts it into perspective how long the Joint Strike Fighter program is going on and me being in my early 30's now, it took almost my entire lifetime from start (around 1993) to introducing the plane into service (2015 to 2019 depending on the variant and their respective users). The time, money, thinking, testing and developing that went into these machines is simply incredible. That's it for now. Wish you a happy Easter weekend and thanks for watching (and reading)
  2. Here is a just finished 1/72 Academy F-35B – far from perfect, but at least close enough to what I wanted to depict. To represent it in landing configuration, the Academy kit offers some advantages. Compared to Italeri, it allows the flaps and elevators to be lowered and comes with non-weighed tyres. Compared to Hasegawa, it lets you leave the inner weapons bay doors partially open - as see e.g. on the Academy kit box top. The shock absorbers of the landing gear were extended using bits of stripped electrical wire, with the torque arms from the Eduard photoetch set easily “unfolded” to match. As for colors, AK RC245 was used for the stealth grey and left unvarnished to avoid losing its metallic shine, and Tamiya XF-20 for the nose and other grey/beige areas. The canopy was tinted (inside and out) with a mixture of Gunze 80% smoke H95 + 20% orange H92. The carrier deck base comes from Uschi, with its yellow line retouched (not very cleanly I’m afraid) to make it look less orange. I had also considered a Steel Scorpion base because it came with an interesting surface texture, however the yellow and white markings didn’t quite match the real thing. Now for some pictures…
  3. Hello everyone, I’d like to share my finished F-35B from Italeri/Tamiya in 1/72 scale. I built this for a friend as he said he didn’t have the time or skill and asked if I could do it for his young son… he gave me some after market decals so the plane could represent an aircraft from the 809 NAS. In hindsight and with a bit more research I could have made this plane slightly more accurate I.e. removed some radar tape etc… basically what I’m saying is, I cuffed it! I made a WIP post here. If you’d like to see more images then you can also find them here. And here she is on my bench while I have a coffee admiring her! Thanks for looking. I also made a build video for those that would like to see. Thanks for looking. Tom
  4. Before some of you get too excited this photo selection is not about English Electric's finest, but instead the RAF F-35B Lightning II (Oh to have had a digital camera when the former was in service! ) Last week I seized the opportunity to take a flight on RAF Voyager KC.3 ZZ334 to shoot some F-35Bs from both 207 Sqn and 617 Sqn that were tanking in UK AARAs 7 and 6 over the North Sea. It's still rather disappointing that the type has yet to receive squadron markings in RAF service, but hopefully these images may be of use or interest to anyone planning to build a scale model of the F-35B. On with the show. I hope these images are of interest. Thanks for looking, c&c always welcome. Mark
  5. Hello everyone, I’ve just began building the F-35B from Italeri/Tamiya in 1/72 scale. The box is well packaged and includes a few sprue’s along with a pilot figure which I won’t be using. As I’m a member of the Naval services I’ll be incorporating the 809 NAS markings. This kit was gifted to me by a friend who had already started the cockpit. I toyed with the idea of purchasing PE but decided against it as it had already been constructed. Nonetheless I gave it a prime, coat of XF1 then a dry brush with Mr Hobby H51. Afterwards I painted a few details and applied the decals. There is quite a few sub assembly engine parts and areas that need painting before the fuselage can be put together. I used Vallejo Black Gloss for any engine parts and Vallejo Grey for the neutral grey and white parts. I’m not a fan of the Vallejo primers but I’m trying to use them up! Here is an image of the engine and exhaust in place. Quite a large portion will go unseen unfortunately. The weapons bays were given a coat of XF2 and will be detail painted in the coming days. And here she is so far. I’ve ordered some canopy masks from Hannants which will make painting the radar tape easier. I’m not looking forward to masking the cockpit and air intake etc, but I know the result will be worth it. Thanks for reading, Tom
  6. Been a while since I posted here, hah. Completed this a little while ago (and it unfortunately accumulated a little bit of dust). Built OOB with a bit of additional wiring detail on the exhaust, some reflective film from an AFVClub tank periscope set, and some aftermarket decals and masking. Base used some Brengun tie down PE. Thanks for looking, Gaz
  7. Hello all, Like it says on the tin - has anyone tried DNModel's 1/72 F-35B RAM panel paint masks (designed for the Hasegawa kit) on the Fujimi kit? Alternatively, used aftermarket RAM panel decals for the F-35A on the Fujimi kit (most likely a combination of cannibalizing the decals for the common panels and masking/painting the rest). Feedback/suggestions much appreciated. Ta!
  8. Pledging to pitch in with this bad boy. Bought on Amazon for £19.99 earlier this year. Italeri chosen soley because it offers British markings. You can blame my boss for this kit arriving in my stash - I did . . . . . . for pointing out that Top Gear race - epic stuff.
  9. Hi all, I wonder if anyone can help me? i purchased a Kitty Hawk F-35b (1/48 scale) which is a stunning kit, the problem is some of the parts on Sprue B are ‘short shot’ and only half moulded. My question is..... does anyone have any way of getting in touch of either Kitty Hawk themselves or the U.K. supplier so I can purchase a replacement sprue? I’ve tried the usual ways- Facebook page, original supplier etc. though with no luck. Can anyone please help?
  10. Evening all, Have been finishing up some long standing projects. This one came about by accident - was given the Revell Dambuster Lancaster, and had the Hasegawa F-35B, so it made sense to combine the two! The Revell Lancaster went together very well - all OOB, with Xtracrylix and Tamiya paints. I also used Windsor Galleria varnish, which is the best matt I've come across. The Hasegawa F-35B went together perfectly - the cockpit and canopy are click fits, and I used Hataka Have Glass paint, which again is the most convincing version of this 'stealth' coating I've come across. The 'other' gray on F-35s is again a bit difficult to nail down; I used Tamiya XF-75 which to my eye works well. I did originally plan to use the new F-35B decals from Xtradecal presented as a bonus on their recent C-130 sheet; what they are not is 1/72, and inaccurate to boot. I used the decals from Italeri's new F-35B which while not as good as Hasegawas will make a pretty fine model in its own right - but that's another project! Anyway, here they are!
  11. Italeris new tooling F-35B in 1/72 is due to arrive Monday 9/12/19! We are now taking pre-orders for this exciting new release. https://www.wonderlandmodels.com/products/italeri-172-f35b-lightning-ii-model-kit/
  12. Hello! Here's the second of my "jump jets" posted today, the 1/72 Hasegawa F-35B. This one was built out of the box and the only major modification was to add some more detail to the pilots seat and downwards pointing nozzle. The kit went together very easily and most of the build time was spent on the paint job. This consisted of an Alclad Aluminium basecoat underneath my own Haveglass grey, mixed together from xf54, x32 and xf85 - this gives an interesting sheen which changes tone depending on the lighting and the angle you look at it. I then spent an age masking the ram panels before spraying another mix of grey. I tested out the ram panel decals in the box on the inside of the tail fins but they are just to contrast-y for my liking to be used all over. I'm really glad to get this one over the finish line and pretty pleased with the final result, even if there are a few things I need to work out for future builds - tinting the canopy was a disaster and I gave up in the end and like the Harrier I got some decal silvering probably because the gloss coat over the paint needed to be smoother..... WIP here: Enjoy! Different light, different effect:
  13. I've been pondering what to make next and decided it was time to have a go at some jets. The harrier is one of my favourite aircraft, it just has a punchy, no nonsense sort of elegance and I also like the full wrap camouflage scheme. The new tool airfix kits I've made (Spitfire Mk1, Henikel He-111, Bf109e) have gone together without too much hassle so decided to stick with what I know with this one, supplemented with the eduard etch bits and pieces. I find the B-version F-35 a fascinating aircraft, I've not exactly fallen in love with its lines but can see it growing on me. I decided to build these kits up in parallel as I thought it would be interesting to compare and contrast them, both in terms of the aircraft itself and as Airfix v. Hasegawa. I'm still learning loads with every new kit I make and these will be the first models without props that I've made since about 1998 - looking forward to it!
  14. Very challenging and fun build on the Kitty Hawk F-35B STOVL Marine Corps Lightning. I started about eight months ago did a ton of research to find the most detailed photos. The aircraft has allot of openings so it only seems right to pay attention to the detail in each area. To give detail but not over do it. Also allot of research and test swatches on the paint. RAM panels overall paint scheme has to be very sharp it’s a challenge for the most seasoned modeller as the aircraft has not been in service that long and even carrier Ops show minimal weathering. The engine and aft underside seems to take the brunt of the weathering. I bashed the hell out of this kit replacing or reworking the engine, rear rudders, leading edge spoilers, wing flaps, vertical stabilizers, landing gear, wheels, cockpit and decals. Lots of wiring and hydraulics added to the landing gear, weapons and landing gear bay. The kit is fair at best the surface detail on the main body upper and lower portion is there but that’s about it. Biggest challenge was the lack of any detail on that gorgeous rotating exaust nozzel Lockheed Martin designed found great photos to work from. If you have any questions on the build paint colours, PE add on kits please feel free to contact me.
  15. Hallo again Here is my F-35B. The kit is from Kitty Hawk. Scale 1/48. The etched parts are from Dreammodel. These are the finest etched parts I ever worked with. Highly recommended. All masking was hand done. Happy modelling
  16. Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II DIE-CUT Flexible Mask (D72001) 1:72 Galaxy Model - For Hasegawa Kit While the Hasegawa F-35B is a good kit, getting the painting right on the kit is a real challenge if you don't want to resort to decals. The set arrived in a thick ziplok bag, which saved it from the beating the envelope received during transit. Inside is a nice glossy cover sheet that provides additional stiffness to the package, and where they consider that not to be sufficient (such as decals), a further sheet of thick glossy card is also added to maintain the product's integrity. This set consists of 2 sheets of pre-cut masks A5 in size of kabuki-style yellow masking material, plus a clear transfer sheet to avoid mis-shaping the masks on the way to the model; and an A4 full colour, glossy sheet of instructions that should help you make a good job. The masks provide the details of the design, which makes the task easier and less likely for the edges to be dragged off-course by lumps, bumps and compound curves. Where necessary a sequence of steps is numbered to guide you through the process without stumbling. Each mask is numbered in red ink, which seems improved and appears to be much more resistant to smudging than earlier batches, which is good to see. The numbers correspond to the diagrams, and additional parts are included for the roll-under edges that extend onto the lower wing and root extensions/chines. The properties of this type of mask lend itself well to masking of acrylic paint especially, which is less resistant to damage, so it makes an easy way of obtaining crisp demarcations with minimal risk of paint pull-up. You can find out where to buy these sets from their website by clicking the button below: Review sample courtesy of
  17. Here are the final pics of my just completed 1/72 scale Hasegawa Marines F-35B. F-35B Build Thread The model is pretty much out of the box, except for the modified horizontal stabilizers and the weapons pod. For details on these, please refer to the build thread. Paints were MM enamels, Alclad II metals and Colourcoats Aircraft Grey FS#36170 -- ACUS41. Can't wait for the Hasegawa F-35C! Ed
  18. Hi folks, I'm back to do a little project that I've been wanting to do ever since I built the Hasegawa F-35A Lightning; namely to build the long hoped for Hasegawa "B" version!. They have come rhough, and I've gotten my grubby mitts on one. I personally feel that the Hasegawa is hands-down the best 1/72 F-35 out there, first the "A", now including the "B" version. (You might correctly surmise that I'm waiting breathlessly for their "C" version, as well!) Some folks didn't like the Hasegawa F-35A, simply because it had no open weapons bays/missles. Folks -- it's a STEALTH aircraft. All that fluff hanging out in the wind is not the best thing ever, as the radar image would not be very stealthy. Well, their "B" version is the same -- no weapons and no bays. The reason that I feel that Hasegawa is the best model of this aircraft is simply that it's pretty much dead-on accurate, as well as having decals provided for the Ram panels, versus the "sculptured terraces" that everyone else uses for RAM panels, with or without decals. But enough editorializing. I got my kit after a few months waiting for my pre-order to be shipped, from Hobby Search in Japan. The kit looks like this. This it appears to have all the parts needed to open or droop to depict landing or takeoff configurations, as well as the option for in flight mode, for which a very nice stand is also included. This build will start kind of slowly, as I am just completing a couple of home remodeling projects, and have company coming at the first of the month, and the garden beckons, etc. But I will try to move along as much as I can, for the near future. See you later, Ed
