  4. In 1980, Eglin AFB was an Air Force Systems Command base. The host unit was the Air Force Development Test Center with its flying activities under the 3246th Test Wing. Tenant units with flying operations were the Tactical Air Warfare Center (TAWC) and the 33rd Tactical Fighter Wing, both were Tactical Air Command units. TAWC fight operations were accomplished by the 53rd Fighter Weapons Wing and the 4485th Test and Evaluation Squadron. The USAF Armament Museum is also located at Eglin AFB. 5. Evening All, Now that my 1/24th diorama is complete (have a look if you want to see how slow I am ), I can finally start this GB...only 2 months late! I initially planned to build an Aggressor F-15C from the now disbanded 65th Aggressor Squadron in a scheme matching my F-16 from the 64th. However, that scheme requires some careful masking with no masking set that I no of available, and since then the 492nd FS out of Lakenheath painted up a jet to commemorate 45 years for F-15A/B/C/Ds in Europe: Image courtesy of The War Zone https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/44245/fully-armed-grim-reaper-f-15-eagles-deploy-to-poland-in-response-to-russian-military-build-up It might be a simple scheme but given the time I have to complete this GB, simple is good - plus TwoBobs have released a decal set: http://www.twobobs.net/contents/en-us/p744_48-277-F-15C-Grim-Reapers-End-of-an-Era.html I have the well regarded but somewhat difficult to get GWH F-15C and have purchased the Quinta Studios 3d Cockpit decals, KA Models Nozzle Set, Eduard masks and Aires ACES II seat - The GWH kit is the best F-15 in scale but having built the E version a few years ago it does have some issues IMO. The decals aren't my favourite especially the matte finish, the seats lack detail and the actuator arms on the nozzles are a too thick, hence the AM parts. Construction unsurprisingly begins with the cockpit (just once I'd like to see someone start with the exhausts or something) and the kit parts are quite detailed but the Aires seat is a bit finer, and most importantly it's a good fit in the cockpit with only minor trimming needed. After fitting a full resin cockpit in my EA-6B, I appreciate the good fit here. Also note I have removed the moulded switch/panel detail on the tub in preparation for the Quinta decals The kit parts have some fine detail which would look great with the right painting but I don't have those skills and what I could do doesn't match the decals so it had to go And where I've got to tonight - basic cockpit primed in black in preparation for the base colour, detail painting and then the decals. I have started prepping the rear avionics bay pieces but I think there is still a little work to do here as I am considering replacing the plastic handles with metal ones due to the seam line on the kit parts. And that's it so far - hopefully I can keep the momentum up tomorrow night and look to get the cockpit mostly finished. Thanks for looking!
  6. I grabbed the new Revell Strike Eagle for €15,- a few weeks ago on an exhibition and nearly couldn´t wait to put my hands on it. But I had to order some goodies first.😎 First step was a dry fit of the cockpit section and I was positively surprised. Everything fits tight and without any problems. In some areas the structures was sanded down for the etched parts bevor painting everything with black and finally Gunze H307. As the etched parts are designed for the Academy kit, they needed some trimming to match the Revell parts. I think the result is okay. Next will be the two crew members from PJ Production and the ACES II seats from the kit. Regards Daniel

  10. Hi... Another GB that fits my stash! After finishing my F-104 in the century series GB (which at the end added another F-104 kit, and F-101 into my stash).. I took to the stash and found 2 F-15E's, a F-15C (early version), a F-15J, and F-15I.. all Hasegawa. Seeing the challenge others face in this GB, I think I'll join with either or both of these; With both still in the plastic bag, I think I will start with the F-15J with less parts count and less modification required... So... Cleared to go? Cheers, Mario
  11. This is my latest finished project, this time completely out of the box, (except for the decals). The GWH kit is very nice, with good surface detail and an overall good fit. The only part of the assembly that required extra care was the engine's intake fuselage area, with some quirky steps, but in the end, it works OK. The big letdown, however, was the awful instructions. I'm not sure if I had an early copy but they were terrible, with unclear drawings not showing enough details, wrong callout etc. There were even 3 correction pages but with mistakes! I ended up downloading from scalemates the instruction of their 1/48th scale which were much more precise. I guess the challenge here was the decals. This is my first digital camo and it was all done through decals. At one point I thought to better paint everything but in the end, the DXM/Cartograf decals were of such good quality that it turned out pretty OK. It was however a long tedious process...First I painted the base two-tone camo, then I added the digital pattern and I finished by adding all the stencils...Based on the very few images I found online and on how new the camo is, I decided to do a very mild weathering, mostly with some airbrush overspray and a little OPR. All comments are welcome! Cheers Jorge
  12. I'll be attempting to do justice to this kit, once the build gets underway: I really like the look of the Japanese graphics, let's hope the decals work well! It will be a straight OOB build (seems to have some resin exhaust nozzles), with the addition of some paint masks.

  15. Guys, so I'm thinking of modelling one of these bad boys (in the title) and was wondering if anyone could give me some help on the best 1/72 scale kits for the aforementioned. I really love these American jets and having modelled Mig-21's Mig-25s' Su-27's and the T-50 I was looking for a bit of a change. Thanks in advance P.S. I'm looking for readily available kits and if you include a link, please could it be to a website that uses GBP. Thank you very much for your time! P.P.S I love this forum!!
  16. Howdy all, I was looking at the ESCI family of 1/72 F-15s as a potential source of multiple lower cost alternatives to Academy's F-15 (with the exception of their latest Beagle kit). The cockpit are equally unfurnished and both kits' exhaust nozzles need replacement. Even the ESCI E could be a good source for an Israeli two seater D Baaz. Are there any shape issues that should concern me?

  18. Nearly 20 years ago I had won an Ebay auction that was including more than 100 scrap kits in 7 moving boxes. I have selected some of them as donors for my running and possible future projects and let the rest of them to go. An old Monogram F-15C was also one of the kit I have reserved. I have first disassembled her into every possible pieces carefully and stripped off the paint: And then assembled her back as good as possible: But this was around 10 years ago. The airplane was waiting her destiny in the dark corner of the workbench till I have bought a Fujimi F-15 Tigermeet. But to me its marking was not accurate and I have decided to make my own decals and use this old kit to test my custom decals. The aim is to build as accurate as the real one: Serkan

  21. Another Cold War USAFE jet, the mighty air superiority fighter the F-15 Eagle. This particular aircraft was based at Bitburg during the 1980s, including stints holding fully armed 'Zulu Alert' status, waiting for the klaxon to sound ordering a scramble. Could it be swarms of MiGs, or just a lost civvie straying too close with the wrong flight plan? Fortunately it was almost always the latter, and 84-019 is now based at Lakenheath with the 493rd FS. Here she is from those halcyon days for aircraft spotters in full 53rd TFS 'Tigers' markings. Built oob apart from the Eduard etched cockpit and Furball decals. It goes together quite nicely with minimum filler. Colours were Tamiya spray cans, AS-25 and AS-26.
  22. McDonnell Douglas F-15C Oregon ANG Special 2016 (ED-72122) 1:72 Euro Decals by Fantasy Printshop Ltd. The Oregon Air National Guard have had some special schemes on their aircraft over the years. In 2015 to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Oregon ANG an F-15C Eagle from the 173rd Fighter Wing based at Klamath Falls was given this special Eagle Scheme. The decals arrive on 3 small size sheets, the quality is first rate with sharpness and colour density both good. Grab yourself a 1/72 Eagle and you've got the basis for a rather interesting and striking scheme to put on it. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  23. Hello fellow modellers, Last year I finished my Tamiya No. 61029 McDonnell Douglas F-15C from 32TFS former USAFE base Soesterberg in the Netherlands. I added to this kit a Aires resin seat with Eduard PE seat belts and cockpitpanels. The exhaust nozzles without the Turkey Feathers are from a Eduard F-15 Strike Eagle kit. I used decal from Dutch Decals and Astra Decals. For the scheme I used two different Ammo from Mig Jimenez tones, A.MIG-203 Light Compass Ghost Gray (FS 36375) and A.MIG-208 Dark Compass Ghost Grey (FS 36320). This kit was published in the December 2019 issue of the modelling magazine, Model Aircraft Monthly. Cheers, Jos.
  24. Afternoon all, The lockdown in the UK has given me plenty of time at the bench, so here are a few photos of my latest build - an F-15E Strike Eagle from the 494th Fighter Squadron based here in the UK (at RAF Lakenheath). This was the new-ish Great Wall Hobby kit with the following additions: Aires F-15 engine nozzles Meng GBU-31 2000lb JDAM Meng AIM-120C Meng AIM-9M Eduard GBU-38 500lb JDAMs Eduard GBU-39 small diameter bombs on BRU-61 racks Eduard Sniper Advanced Targeting Pod TwoBobs F-15E "Maximum Effort" decals So enough waffling.... The TwoBobs decals are excellent - I used them first on my F-16 and after that experience I had to get them for this as well. The decal sheet gives you enough to build 4 Strike Eagles (2x Revell & 2x GWH) so when I'm feeling ambitious again, I am all set. Obviously someone in the 494th is a Toy Story fan! The Strike Eagles can definitely carry an impressive load - one of many disappointments with the GWH kit is that it doesn't include a centreline pylon despite the instructions mentioning one! So I used photos and the wing pylons as a guide and scratchbuilt one for the GBU-31. The Eduard GBU-38s are awesome pieces - each one is comprised of 4 parts and the detail is excellent - they even provide masks for painting the complex nose. The decals are also perfect. The Aires exhausts are a big improvement over the kit parts and well worth the upgrade although some surgery was required to get them to fit. For the metallic finish I used Mr Paint lacquers which went down well over a gloss black base - the staining and heat discolouration was done with pencils. The Eduard GBU-39s and Sniper pod are excellent - definitely recommended! Sooo many decals - even though the TwoBobs decals went down well, I really didn't enjoy having to put down so many of them! Enjoy the rest of the weekend, and thanks for looking!
  25. This build was cursed. That is all. Problems were mostly caused by my own clumsiness, not the GWH kit, which in terms of fit and surface detail is fantastic. Dropped the model, breaking a stabiliser and meaning I had to redo the first camo colour during the large-scale masking work… then a gear leg snapped and I had to drill the stumps out and brass rod repair job the thing, the AK colours I used for the first time on this kit didn’t react well to Mr Leveling Thinner, separating during spraying so that each cup sprayed different shades which meant my usual shading technique was impossible. The GWH Decals are almost completely useless due to being extremely thick and with a matt finish that makes them almost impossible to blend into paintwork, even with Agama Hypersol. As a result, I bought some aftermarket decals and made this colourful (for an F-15C anyway) US Air Force 1st Fighter Wing bird stationed at Langley AFB in 2004. This particular aircraft was the the personal mount of (then) Commander Frank Gorenc, who went on to become a four star general and commanded US Air Forces Europe and Africa. When spraying a layer of varnish to protect the decals, however, the real disaster occurred. I refilled the airbrush cup and forgot to put the lid back on, meaning that I splashed a large dollop of Mr Super Clear III on the left wing, which immediately dissolved the existing varnish, decals and paint layers. Much cursing and fixing required before I could get back to weathering. Even once nearly done the resin engine replacements kept falling off due to miniscule glueing area, the canopy was dirty and fogged inside when masks came off so I had to cut/lever it off to fix, and the pylons were a job and a half to get settled in place. All in all much more work than it needed to be but I think the result is ok.
