Time to jump in! Due to work/illness/travel/life/winter I haven't done much modelling of late, so this should be a good motivation booster, and hopefully a worthy (if modest) contribution to the GB. This is a really neat little kit. Mine has a little bit of flash, but looks like it will build up really nicely. I'll do it out of the box, hoping for a relatively quick, fun build. My subject will be an Okinawa-based 207 Squadron jet, wearing a (trial?) blue and grey air superiority scheme from circa 1984, using the kit decals. Colour pic here. Something I learned doing some reading on the weekend, 207 Sqn's tail markings featured the Southern Cross, with Okinawa the only place in Japan from where it is visible. (Wikipedia says the squadron disbanded in 1986 with the retirement of the F-104J.) Few aircraft could fly faster and higher than the aptly-named Starfighter, making it perfectly-suited for service with the JASDF, which almost uniquely among F-104 operators used the type largely as an interceptor - just as Kelly Johnson intended. My build won't set any speed or time to climb records, but it should be fun! Gerard

Dear Fellow Britmodellers I hope you are not getting bored with my hanger? They seem to accept a wide range of aircraft for servicing! Japan was one of the many countries who decided to buy Lockheed’s affordable and futuristic looking Mach-2 interceptor. The 203 Squadron replaced the ageing F-86D sabres in the QRA role with the Starfighter in 1964 and held onto them until the advent of the F-15 replacement in 1984. 203 squadron are based at Chitose in Hokkaido (the north eastern island). Don't ask me why they have a Teddy Bear with a star shaped bra for their symbol! The majority of the 210 F-104J models were built by Mitsubishi in Japan. The Hasegawa kit maybe somewhat old but its discrete panel lines are second to none. Unfortunately, the fuselage is divided into nose and main body to allow for the manufacturer to easily have a twin seat model. Mating the two halves perfectly is almost impossible. The model has Eduard PE and a master pitot tube. The kit is still sold and can be picked up very cheaply. Hope you like it? Regards Andrew- 25 replies

I've left this late and if I don't start I'm not going to finish on time - I'll be away for a couple of weekends in July so I only have 6 weekends to get this done. It's the Hasegawa 1/48 F-104J. I have a few aftermarket goodies for it but in the interests of time I might not use them all. I'll be using the Two Bobs Komatsu Starfighters sheet, going to go for the natural metal/red/white option - there's a photo of it here: http://www.916-starfighter.de/Large/Stars/wJ673.htm Here's the open box and aftermarket stuff: I've made a start - got a few subassemblies assembled and started painting. Don't have a photo to share yet - not really worth sharing at this stage - but hopefully will make quick progress. If I can get the fuselage closed up next weekend I reckon I can get it done by the end of the GB.

Looks like injection-molded plastic parts and a comprehensive decal sheet. This will fill an important niche in the F-104 lineage. I'm guessing most people will want to do the aircraft Chuck Yeager crashed as seen in "The Right Stuff" http://hlj.com/product/MDA75016
