Hey all, So right off the bat, I know this isn't an IS-3M, I figured out the Egyptian's only used that variant after laying down the base coat. By then though, I was commited in my mind so just take this with a pinch of artistic license! The kit itself is self-explanatory for Tamiya, its a 90's kit but still holds up well today. My only minor gripe is that this is part of Tamiya's era of leaving the areas above the track open, though with the width and hefty nature of the track I didn't close the gaps as the track would cover it. The kit is built entirely out of the box. I painted the model using Tamiya Xf-55 Deck Tan, as I had read that the Epyptians used British Light Stone for their earlier stuff, and I liked the light tone. I then took a fine brush and Humbrol 155 Olive Drab and spent a good hour and a half chipping the vehicle. As the old saying goes 'No chip is too small!' I applied a thick home made wash of van-dyke brown oils mixed with white oils and thinned with white spirit. Once semi-dry I took the excess off and left the grime built up over the recessed areas. I then took a pin wash to the rest of the vehicle. I additionally used the wash mix, thinned further and misted over the vehicle with my airbrush to create a dusty look. For this vehicle I wanted to accentuate the 'blobby' look of it which for me is a classic design of the early Cold War Period. To achieve this, I left off the .50 and I had the vehicle buttoned up to show off the relatively smooth and flowing lines around the turret. I also didn't use any stowage on this vehicle, as the Egyptians for some reason travelled lightly looking at references. I think it has something to do maybe with all the internal stowage and lockers built into the skirts on Soviet late/post-war vehicles. The markings were sprayed on, and take strong influence from the Egyptian markings of the period, though I couldn't say if they were 100% accurate. As stated earlier, the vehicle's the wrong variant for those used by Egypt, so this vehicle more or less represents an inspired view of what the Egyptian's were using at the time. Hi all I've been looking at sprue shots of the new Eduard kit and I cannot tell if there is an option for a vertically straight exhaust pipe for the earlier R-11F-300 engine. Sprue shots clearly show the correct MF 'stepped' exhaust ring. If I'm not mistaken, this is the main difference between the MF and FL. Others include radar and canopy mirror. The FL was an export version. The Egyption AF had some in 1973.

Hi all Print Scale do attractive decals for Mig-17 without mentioning the exact variant they are destined for. https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/PSL72008 Please any recommendations for a Mig-17 kit in 1/72 scale? In particular the Egyptian version? Are there any pics on the internet that will assist? Thanks in anticipation. M.M.

I love this hobby, chasing aircraft around the UK. I've been doing it since I was in a pram and it never gets boring. Some photos from the last month or so, we've had some great bits visit and I just had to go see them. Well over 1500 miles covered and some very early get ups, especially for the Kazakhstan stuff, left mine at 4am to get to Mildenhall in good time. Then two aircraft (Casa & An-72) turned back just as we arrived at the base, so I only got one Casa arrival, then I went back the same time Saturday to see them leave. Sadly for me, heat haze killed my photos, but least I have a pic.. Some pics. First up, a first visit of the type/country to the UK, an Egyptian Air Force Casa, still not confirmed why here, but it came twice. An early get up for a 9am departure ended up being a 1310 departure, so I made use of the Sunday arrivals. I also diverted on the way down for the RIAT weekend for a night shot on it's second visit. Antarctic Survey DHC-7 seen at Coventry. 17/07/2016 RubyStar An-12, a first visit of the type to RAF Benson. I was due to get on base for the arrival as my brother was working on it, (the jammy...) but it fell through last minute. Still great to see though. Next up, Mildenhall for the Kazakhstan Air Force stuff that was due. This was the second visit, but the first arrival on Thursday. This is the Casa and Antonov departing on the Saturday in killer haze. Then onto some of the stuff that arrived while we was at Mildenhall. On the Saturday I was over the moon to see a RC-135 move.. Going back to the Thursday, we nipped into a few airfields on the way home.. Little Gransden being one, where Yak One is, so we asked to get some photos and luckily we was allowed. After a desultory modelling performance for 2014 (rediscovered how much I love playing jazz guitar and forgetting how much practise you need), I’m throwing caution to the wind and attacking my burgeoning stash. Need to practise my canopy masking and get to grips with Xtracolor while I’m at it. This is the victim, harmless, not very good and something I won’t weep over if I trash it. Apparently Airfix are re-issuing this – hope they put in a decent interior and do something about the wheel wells i.e. box them in and put in some detail. Decided on this wild and crazy scheme from Wings Palette, seeing as I have some horrible smeary 1948 war decals from Lift Here to make use of. Those Lift Here decals are horrible and a waste of 7.99 compared the sharply printed but wafer thin Techmod versions. That said, the owner emailed me on a Sunday and sent out a replacement that arrived from Serbia in two days. Sadly that was even more smeared and blurry than the original, Lift Here- great service not so great decals. First point of call is the sparse cockpit: I made up some crap for the side walls but got bored moving around 0.1mm rod with Mr Hobby extra thin cement so stopped after this was done and some sanity was still present. Control panel from Airfix Mk1 Spit will be added later. Hey lookit the crow bar, even flattened the ends and made it look like the one in Mk 24 I clean at Solent Sky every week! The seat should be replaced but a back rest, a jauntily angled control column and some homemade belts are going to be Pilot Officer Abdul’s lot The keen eyed may spot the rather gaudy green: used the wrong interior green, doh! Next is a gunsight- according to the refs it is a flat, bronze coloured object and this is as close as I’m getting. There were two pieces of glass but what are you gonna see through this? (And this after Future-ing!) While various varnishes dry and glues set, a quick dry fit: Time to go molest a Telecaster and play weird sounding chords, more tomorrow..
