  1. Another recent completion of a fairly well modelled subject-Blue 12. An interesting challenge to paint, given the multiplicity of colours, primers and component production. The engine exhaust is as per colour photos...it seems they got pretty dirty. Eaglecals provided excellent decals and paint notes, and from what I can divine, the Hasegawa kit is on balance the best in 1/72. German subjects aren't really my bag (excepting Battle of Britain subjects) but I really enjoyed this project. Paints mainly Tamiya.
  2. Fw.190As & Fw.190A-8/R2s (#173 & #175) 1:48 EagleCals by Eagle Editions Ltd We’re well-served with Fw.190 kits in all scales, as it was one of the mainstay fighters of the German Luftwaffe of WWII alongside the equally well-known Bf.109. Eagle Editions have released these two decal sets that will help you depict a number of Fw.190As in 1:48 (other scales are available), from the early A-2s and A-3s in set #173 through to the later A-8/R2s in set #175, which had their 20mm outer-wing cannons replaced with larger 30mm Mk.108s for extra punch when attacking the bomber streams or engaging with Allied fighters in the defence of the Reich. Each sheet arrives in a ziplok bag, with the double-sided A3 instructions folded into four to act as protection for the decal sheets within. Sheet #173 has two sheets, with the balkenkreuz on a smaller additional sheet, while sheet #175 manages to fit all the decals on the one sheet. The instructions show larger side profiles of each airframe inside, top and partial bottom profiles, plus a separate page depicting the airframe stencilling, and a good deal of written information about each subject that covers a full A4 page. The almost photo-realistic profiles are penned by James Bentley, and are of excellent quality. Decals are by Cartograf, which is a guarantee of good registration, sharpness and colour density, with a thin gloss carrier film cut close to the printed areas. Swastikas have been supplied, but in order not to fall foul of territories where displaying the symbol is illegal or to suit your own personal tastes, they are supplied in two halves, having separate central sections that you can omit, or just leave them off all together if the urge takes you. From the sheets you can build the following: Fw.190As – 1:48 (Sheet #173) Fw 190 A-2 “Yellow 12” flown by Oblt Rolf Hermichen 3./JG 26 May 1942, St. Omer France Fw 190 A “Green 2” Geschwader Stab JG 5 Fw 190 A-3 “Yellow 12” 9./JG 2 Fw 190 A-3 “Yellow 13/”Old Shap”, pilot Ofw. Josef Heinzeller Fw.190A-8/R2 – 1:48 (Sheet #175) “Black 8” 11.Sturm/JG 3 Uffz. Willi Maximowitz June 1944, Dreux France “Yellow 2” W.Nr. 682181 6./JG 300 Fw. Hubert Engst Dec 1944 Löbnitz, Germany “Black 4” 8/JG 300 Lt. Victor Heimann Feb 1945 Löbnitz, Germany “Yellow 12” Muschi 6/JG 300 Uffz. Paul Lixfeld Nov 1944 Löbnitz, Germany Conclusion If you’re looking for some different decals than those included in your kit box, then you should certainly consider these as candidates for your off-piste decals. Well-printed by industry masters Gartograf with some methodical research and high-quality instructions. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  3. Spitfire Mk.Ia Decals (48-174) 1:72, 1:48 & 1:32 EagleCals Decals We’ve never been short of Mk.1 Spits in any scale, but there have been a few new 1:48 kits from a couple of manufacturers of late, and it’s only natural that decal manufacturers are on the spot providing some alternative options to what can be found in the decal sheet within your kit’s box. EagleCals are one of those happy band, and have released this set of three specific airframes from early war, namely 1940 in the run up to, and during the Battle of Britain. The set arrives in the almost ubiquitous (for decal sets) ziplok bag, with the A3+ cover sheet and instruction booklet folded into four at the front, and two sheets of decals within, the smaller of the two containing the overflow of the first option with the Kiwi bird on the side. Decals are by Cartograf, which is a guarantee of good registration, sharpness and colour density, with a thin gloss carrier film cut close to the printed areas. The instructions guide you through the decaling process, with the stencils on separate diagrams to avoid confusion, and photographic quality side profiles show where the rest of the decals go, with a little help from some smaller top/bottom profiles overleaf. There is a lot of background information for each option along with a little blurb about the Spitfire in general, and the former is shown below along with the profiles of your options. The quality of research is clearly very dilligent, and the instructions take the time to thank Mark Proulx for his help, and credits James Bentley for the excellent profiles. Conclusion For a Mk.Ia Spit, this is an excellent set, offering three options, some of which you may have heard of, printed by the de facto gold standard of decal printers. Great instructions round out the package. Highly recommended. The sheet is available in 1:72, 1:48 and 1:32 flavours, and you can see more information and choose which scale you fancy from the link below: Review sample courtesy of
  4. Hi, this is bf 109 g-6 white 12 + I. W. Nr 27111 of 7./jg3 which was flown by obfw. Kurt Graf when based at Bad Worishofen Germany October 1943. This aircraft was part of the w. Nr. 5. Here is my latest bench blocker, My second Revel FAA Corsair in 1;72 scale. In a break with tradition and against all common decency I have not posted the obligatory sprue shots or any of the decal set or the Eduard Zoom fret, mainly because I didn't take any. Having built one already I was aware of the immediate action remedy's on the wings, mainly fill the wing tip join gaps, fill the lights on the underside of the port wing and create another light and chop out the wingtip lights. I also fitted the stall vane outboard of the guns on the starboard wing. The radiators need a bit of shimming to fit nicely...…. The seat got some detail and the armour got some bolts and a new head rest.....Oh and the prop got reworked too. I made up the two fuselage vents side vents, these get cut down severely, and I gave the cowling a good reaming...... A bit of a rescribe and a shot of primer followed by Zinc chromate and gloss coat then Flory wash...……. Eduard Zoom...…………..frustrating as hell! This is during the build...………..before the really delicate and quite frankly invisible stuff! Pilots seat and bulkhead ready to go...…….. The lump all buttoned up...……. More of the Zoom set, the throttle quadrant was very flimsy, so I filled it with GatorsGrip which worked a treat! Parts of the Under Carriage were not great, they were a bit short, so I slid a thin length of brass tube inside another and cut two piston like lengths, using the original parts as a guide, I drilled a hole to accept the thicker end in the UC leg and put a dab of CA there then when I fitted the gear I extended the inner tube and CA`d the other end! That went in the win column! There was a bit of "Handbags" on here earlier in the week regarding FAA Corsairs and bombs, I wouldn't let it lie as usual, but it all got sorted, as usual members had all the relevant gen, the upshot is I need a couple of british bomb carriers, I still dont know weather they`ll go on this kite or not yet, it means getting a Swordfish for the relevant parts which will hold up the build...……………….. But there is another Corsair in the stash she`ll be a really late bird ! Radiator doors scribed and a shot of primer...…………… The lights on the starboard wing have been drilled out, they will get acrylic crystal treatment, the new port wing light will get a punched clear plastic lens. Armoured windscreen primed...…………. Bomb fairings after a scribe...…………...I have seen fots of these missing altogether and the hole plated over, or in place with the fittings for ordnance or tanks covered with the curved fairing as they are now. Canopy masked Here`s the Prop main wheels and the modified tail gear...……. all ready for the next sesh! Ta for lookin` no "G" Granto
  6. #12/2018 After the KG(J)54 bird, my dad now built a partner for it from KG(J)6. Hobby Boss kit with EagleCals, Tamiya and Gunze acrylics, EZ Line for all the wires. This aircraft was found by allied troops in May 1945. It was used by Wilhelm Niederkrüger for two recorded training flights. Not known if it was used for more or combat duty. 7. Dear fellow Britmodellers, fresh off the workbench, here's my 1/72 Tamyia Fw-190D "White 17" of JG2. Photo etch from Eduard, decals from EagleCals (EC#109). Guns and pitot tube from Master. Painted with Gunze/Mr.Hobby acrylics, weathered with artist's oils. All photographs by Wolfgang Rabel. Thank you for your interest. Best greetings from Vienna. Roman
  8. Redecided and gave this another chance as ghost in the attic. 9. This aircraft is available as an option on Eaglecals EC48-129 and 32-129. Both sheets come with a poster of the aircraft with too much sheen on the left fuselage, making it rather difficult to see any fuselage camouflage details. This photo shows the contrasts between the RLM 70 and 71, and also shows the aircraft carrying a white-outlined Swastika, without the black filling. I hope you find this photo helpful.
  10. #6/2018 The first pair with a matching fuselage band is finshed. After the Bf109G-14 with a KG(J)54 band, now my dad built this attractive 262. A similar KG(J)6 pair will follow. Tamiya kit with EagleCals, the fuselage band is painted because the decal didn´t look right. EZ Line used for antenna wires and front brake line. 13. #25/2017 My dad finished another one for this year. Hasegawa kit, Eagle Cals, EZ Line for aerials, plastic rods and lead wire for brake lines, Gunze and Tamiya acrylics Slightly different colour interpretations of this aircraft, also usually seen with a red spinner. 14. #13/2016 As promised, my dad´s Messerschmitt saga continues Hasegawa kit with EagleCals, Gunze and Tamiya paints, wiring with EZ Line, brake lines with plastic rods and lead wire Model shows the Regensburg built a/c of Staffelkapitän Hauptmann Karl-Heinz Langer, CO of the "Kometenstaffel" that was equipped either with gun pods or W.Gr.21 rockets to fight against the allied bomber masses. 15. Decals for Fw.190Fs #165 1:72, 1:48 & 1:32 Eagle Editions Eagle Editions' new sheet for the Fw.190F is timed for the release of the new Revell kit in 1:32, but is suitable for any other kit of the F, which is the ground-attack variant of the A. The decals arrive in a ziplok bag, and inside is a folded A3+ combined backing card and instruction booklet that gives the modeller a lot of information about the choices available, as well as some nicely done large profiles, top views with scrap views of the underwing crosses, and a stencil placement guide. The aircraft available from the sheet are as follows: "Black 5" W.Nr. Unknown Luftflotte 4 April 1945 Frankfurt am Main, Germany Fw 190 F-8. Pilot: Unknown. "Black 2" Werknummer Unknown Luftflotte 4 Fw 190 F-9. Pilot: Unknown. "Green 3" W.Nr. 588717 St.II/SG 2 1945 Milovice, Czechoslovakia Arado built Fw 190 F-8. Pilot: Unknown. "Red 2" Werknummer Unknown Luftflotte 4 Fw 190 F-8. Pilot: Unknown. The sheet is broken down into areas by dotted red lines, with one of each of the four sections for the decals specific to each option, and the reminder covering the national markings and stencils. The Swastikas are printed with their middles removed, and if you want to reinstate them, you must layer another decal containing the balance of the shape on top. It's not the most elegant solution in terms of thickness, but it does allow the modeller to put the outer section in as a representation without breaching any local laws or upsetting anyone. The decals are printed by Cartograf, so you can be assured that registration, sharpness and colour density is up there with the best, with a thin, closely cropped glossy carrier film. Conclusion A very nicely presented, printed and documented set of decals from EagleCals, with considerate touches such as patches of decal material to apply where previous markings had been painted over on the real thing. The stencils will really bring out the detail too. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of
