Hello everyone Now that I've finally finished off my pair of 180 Sqn Mitchells, next along onto the workbench will be an Airfix 1/72 Phantom FGR.2 (just the one at the moment... ), which will of course be XV415, which currently resides at R.A.F. Boulmer here in Northumberland. Livery and markings to be confirmed, as there's quite a choice from the original Dark Green/Dark Sea Grey/Light aircraft Grey with red/white/blue D type roundels all the way to Barley Grey/MSG/Light Aircraft Grey with red fin it wears now. The last R.A.F. Phantom I built was the Matchbox one way back in the early 1980s, so it's going to be fun to see how the Airfix one compares (I think I know the answer to that already...). I've been having a look at the reviews of the Airfix kit to see what aftermarket bits are available, and had a dekko at the plastic in the box. First impressions are very good indeed, save that a couple of the sprues seem to have suffered some warpage, which hopefully won't affect the build. Anyway, a couple of questions... There are two lower wing options in the kit: Presumably an original wing, and a revised one with strengthening added. When would the strengthening strips have been applied to the airframe, roughly? And secondly, I see that Air Graphics have replacement 370 gallon underwing tanks: https://air-graphics.uk/shop/ols/products/ac-309-mcdd-f-4-phantom-correct-370-gal-fuel-tanks These are the ones in the kit: The Air Graphics ones look pointier (without getting too technical, ahem...). Every manufacture includes the 75 gallon teardrop shape drop tank with their P-51 but Tamiya is the only one that also produce the larger 110 gallon drop tank used in the Pacific. I would like a 1/48th scale 110 gal tank, so would anyone with the Tamiya D/K mind measuring the tanks for me? The major dimensions would be very useful - length, width and height.

Vampire Mk.I Underwing Slipper Tanks (for Special Hobby Kit) 1:72 CMK It's a while now since Special Hobby did us fan of Cold War RAF types a favour and produced a new range of De Havilland Vampires in our favourite scale. The Mk.I was the most recent version of the kit to hit the shelves. Now Special Hobby have followed up with a set of resin slipper tanks, realeased through their CMK imprint. The quality of casting is excellent and the parts are as well detailed as they could be given the subject. All you will need to do is remove them from their casting blocks and clean up the pouring stubs. Overall these are a good addition to an already nice kit. Recommended. Review sample courtesy of -
I'm just starting to model an aircraft attached to 135 Sq. RAF in May 1945, a Thunderbolt P-47D-22. And I want to model it on a specific day, May 2, 1945, when 135 Sq. strafed the beaches south of Rangoon in support of the Operation Dracula landing. I'm trying to decide what sort of drop tanks I need on this aircraft. Round trip distance from Akyab probably about 650 miles. No bombs were dropped, so I presume none were carried. Take-off 0445, return 0830. I have photographs of 135 Sq. aircraft with paired 150 US gallon wing tanks, and also of aircraft carrying three 108 US gallon tanks, but none from the day in question. Does the absence of bombing necessarily imply that all three pylons were occupied, or would the fuel load preclude a bomb? Or might there be reasons not to carry a bomb? (It had been established the previous day that the area was unexpectedly lightly defended.) Any other practical reasons that would make one arrangement of tanks more likely than another? Thanks in advance for any thoughts you can offer.

Small PE braces and fuel lines are also supplied, as is a small decal sheet with tank markings, 104 Gal Paper Fuel Tanks (648350) The are two whole cast replacement P-51D 104 gal paper drop tanks. Due to their larger size and more complex surface they are three part. Small PE braces, the larger straps, and fuel lines are also supplied, as is a small decal sheet with tank markings. Hello all, I am seeking advice on how to construct an F-86F Sabre that is in-flight but has jettisoned its drop tanks (e.g. when the Sabres were about to engage Migs): Should I attach the drop tank rack/connector(?) to the wing undersides, or omit all such parts and just fill the holes on the wing underside? (I am using the Airfix 1/72 kit for the F86-F/E; # A03082A) I've searched many images on the web and modelling forums, but haven't found anything useful, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. By the way, I have only just started making models in the last couple of months with my first-born. Otherwise, it has been more than 35 years since I put together a Matchbox kit. I am amazed at how the hobby has progressed and what products and after-market upgrades are available for the base kits. Good times ahead. Many thanks in advance, Dazey
