  1. ....well I hope it will at the finish! 😁 Welcome to part 2 of my repatriation to the hobby. For background, the first instalment was here https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235120976-rookie-errors-revisited-first-build-for-36-years-with-apologies-to-spitfire-fans-finished/page/3/ I learned a lot and really appreciated the generous advice and encouragement. Major lessons I think were 1. I need to greatly improve my application of dark green over dark earth 2. Wheels are wheely ( ) difficult! I had some major painting traumas in those previous builds 3. I was rather too zealous with the filing and my scribing skills are almost negligible so I need to guard any surrounding details if I need to do this again But on the plus side 4. I got a lot of sanding sponge material of different grades that will last a lifetime!! 5. I really enjoyed fiddling around with the internal details - even though they can't be seen in 72nd scale 6. I learned useful stuff like being able to scale printed plans to the correct size 7. Despite the attentions of the Domestic Accounts Department, I've managed to collect a few more models for the stash (there was a sale on dear! ) as well as some new paints and gadgets (which of course are all essential ) I know there are many threads for this rightly popular subject. I hope you don't feel its a case of "Oh no! Not another one!". Anyway, to business. I decided that I needed to have a go at some things in prep for this build. Looking at my illustrious predecessors with this model, I rather liked the idea of addressing the wing tip lights and improving upon the "silver paint" approach. I also noted in the walk around thread (https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234999078-boulton-paul-defiant/ ) that the landing lights are very prominent. The kit supplied transparencies look a bit un-refined, shall we say. So could I do anything about them? Whilst in the loft I came across what must be the only relic from my former modelling days. I think it was by Revell in the 1960's and purports to be a Hurricane. By modern standards it can only be described, borrowing from Douglas Adams, as being almost entirely but not quite unlike a Hurricane. So I had no compunction in attacking it with my newly acquired (actually I've had it a long time dear) razor saw. The wing tips seemed to work ok using transparent sprue. And I was really pleased with the landing light "dish". This was made using a cheap n cheerful hole punch made from a handy wooden peg, drilling a hole of the right size, then using the drill bit non-business end to poke through the silver foil. After a couple of tries, I found that the foil from wine bottles was the right combination of stiffness and maleability. It has the advantage of being readily available ..... but I won't say how readily The hard part was the clear covering over the front and I haven't solved that yet. In the picture above is sticky tape. Although it's the best I've tried I'm not quite sure it will actually stick in place. I thought I'd come up with a brill idea of heating some spare acetate and when soft enough moulding it around the wing leading edge. The shape wasn't bad. It was close but I couldn't get it to adhere in a non-messy way in the right place! Glue everywhere! So any hints or tips would be gratefully received. Until I find a solution I'll try the wing tip lights on the Defiant but not the landing lights upgrade....... The other thing I did in preparation was thouroughly check all the parts and try and plan ahead to avoid "eventualities". Learning from previous posts, I dry fitted a fair number of parts. However, due to the very delicate state of some of the very tiny bits there were accidents. I seem to have badly bent, but not yet fractured, one of the undercarriage leg stays whilst still on the sprue! The other things that suffered were the machine gun barrels!!! Impressive for this scale in plastic I thought, but so delicate. But I had an answer! I treated myself to some After Market items!!! This is new for me apart from decals. In the post I received some beautiful little brass replacements by Master They're so nice I can't bear to think of applying paint - especially with my ham-fisted approach. Anyway, persistence points if you've got this far! All constructive comments welcome. Thanks for looking Rob
  2. Here’s my interpretation of the Boulton Paul Defiant Mk. I, N1801, “Coimbatore II”, from No.264 Squadron, Royal Air Force Duxford, flown by Flying Officer F. D. Hughes and Sergeant F. Gash (gunner). This is another excellent 1/48 kit by Airfix, built entirely out of the box, with a few exceptions; I added a pilot (no gunner, I’m afraid) and antenna wire, plus applied riveting to the surface to liven up the monochrome night fighter scheme. I also used Montex masks so I could weather the roundels, squadron codes etc.: they were good for this job but horrible for transparencies, peeling away almost instantly. I wanted the challenge of painting entirely in shades of black, hoping I could create enough variety to make something visually satisfying. Many of the images I used as reference indicate the night black paint the RAF used would chip and fade dramatically, and I imagine the color shifts would be similarly dramatic. Not sure I made that as clear as I hoped, but it was fun to use every chipping technique I could think of to convey the beating these poor, doomed aircraft went through. I used Mission Model paints over a coat of Tamiya lacquer silver, layering greys up to Nato black (with additional colours), chipping through to the layer beneath each time. Although Airfix might not achieve the miraculous engineering of Tamiya or the erudite detailing of Eduard, each kit I’ve built falls together with predictable ease and makes a satisfying canvas to paint on, which is where modeling comes alive for me. Thanks for your time!
  3. This Airfix Defiant was built mostly out-of-the-box, except for a new serial number, black and white wing undersides and swapped fuselage roundels. And a narrow fin flash in lighter colours. L6977 (PS-U) was sent on patrol over Holland with 5 other Defiants on May 13 1940. This plane, like the others, was shot down and Pilot Officer P E J Greenhous and LAC F D Greenhalgh (Air Gunner) became POWs. Cheers, Luka
  4. A late entry for this GB, as I decided not to build the Hasegawa F-106, for reasons I explained in the chat thread. After some contemplation, I chose the "new" Airfix Defiant: If there is one thing that has bugged me (to put it mildly) with quite a few Airfix kits from the past 10-15 years, it's the thickness of the trailing edges of the main wings and control surfaces. Look at the ailerons on this kit. Being molded in full on the lower wing, you'd think they would be nice and sharp, but not a bit of it: They must be at least 1mm thick, equating to 3 inches in 1:1. Naturally, this looks completely unrealistic. I carefully removed them before assembling the wing, having also thinned down (somewhat) the trailing edges of the rest of the wings. I will reattach the ailerons only once I've thinned them down. This thinning will be done on the under side, at cost of the surface detail there. This loss of detail won't be that visible much, partly because it's on the underside, and partly because I have chosen the all-black night fighter version. Having just a single overall colour will help hide the fact that the trailing edges everywhere will still be too thick. Were I building the day fighter version, I would take a much more aggressive approach, to the extent that the wing/fuselage join would need some inserts. The best thing that can be said is that the engineering of this join is compatible with what I'd like to do in that scenario. As I have two more, both part of the "Dogfight Double" set with the Do 17, this will likely happen at some point. The cockpit looks as if it will be much more straightforward:
  5. Here's a little model I've finished more as a test piece for RAF cammo scheme with my airbrush than anything else. Its the new Airfix mould. Its a great little kit for the money . Iits also a tribute to the very brave men who flew this aircraft. Almost suicidal but they still did so! I used the Hataka RAF paints set. Not too sure Bout the Dark Earth from this kit? Looking at the airfix box art and paint instructions it looks a touch too dark for a defiant. I'm not an expert but what do you all think? I ďidnt use any primer on this kit ... Some of the decals fell apart so I had to change the squadron code lol its finish with AK gloss which I thinned down with water to 50:50 and applied by brush One of the 303s broke off and the Carpet monster ate it... damn! The pitot tube is made from a paper clip and painted lol 1:72 is not my favourite scale I find it hard as its a bit small for me these days. Anyway errors and omissions apart.. I hope you enjoy this one! Some more pictures Added some new pictures taken outside in natural light
  6. Even though it all started with Spitfires for me,as I’ve gotten older and learnt more about the Battle of Britain and the aircraft I’ve developed a soft spot for the crews that flew and fought in the less glamorous types. My entries for this build will be two Airfix kits: A 1/72 Defiant to be built as L7026 ‘PS-V’ and a 1/72 Blenheim If to be built as L8665 ‘BQ-A’ of 600 Sqn. A note for posterity: Defiant L7026 PS-V 264 Sqn shot down 28 August 1940 P/Os PL Kenner and CE Johnson - both killed Blenheim L8665 BQ-A 600 Sqn shot down 08 August 1940 Pilot: F/O. Dennis Neve Grice. Killed Air/Gnr: Sgt. Francis John Keast. Killed Obs: AC 1. John Benjamin William Warren. Killed
  7. Airfix 1/48 Defiant NF1, I really enjoyed this build, like all the "new" Airfix I've built, everything fitted together well with very little filler required. As I was going to build it with the canopy open I splashed out on a set of Eduard seat belts and as the was a lot of clear stuff to be painted a set of Eduard masks as well. These fitted really well but tended to "leak" a little where two pieces overlapped, ultimately this was not a problem as 5 mins with a cocktail stick tidied everything up. As always painted with Vallejo air paints with just a little weathering to break up the overall black and to make things a little more "interesting"
  8. Hi All, I'll be building Airfix' original Defiant MkI as PS@V of 264 Sqn RAF Martlesham Heath, June 1940. Here is a nice clear photo of the aircraft (image copyright Imperial War Museum): A shot of the box: I'll be completing this OOB, with the exception of Eduard harnesses and masks. Here's the sprues (part painted already!) The cockpit builds up nicely - I did drill out the slot to accept the harness (just visible). After drybrushing, chipping and an oil wash: I used the kit decal for the IP over the moulded IP. Here it is after lots & lots of Microsol: And after picking out the instruments with Micro Gloss: I'm not displeased with that result - it looks okay at normal scale, at least! Here's the cockpit located in the fuselage with the turret deck fitted: And finally, buttoned up - all located very nicely with no awkward fit: That's the extent of progress for now - thanks for looking! Roger
  9. Goodmornig Here, my last work, an Airfix kit 1/48 and new AK Real Color paints. Take a nice day At next Ettore
  10. Boulton Paul Defiant Mk.I. No. 264 Squadron, Martlesham, Suffolk, England, July 1940. This is the new 1/72nd scale Defiant from Airfix. I will use an Eduard Zoom set for the interior detail, Set No SS525. For the camouflage colour paint, I have Hannants Xtracrylix. The markings will be the standard kit decals. For weathering and panel lines I intend to use gouache. Thank you for looking, Joe.
