  1. I really like the austere look of the 1980s-vintage Hawker HS-125 CC.3 in RAF service, painted gloss white overall and a roundel blue cheat line, similar to that shown on the Matchbox cover-art of the CC.2. To do justice to the type requires kit-bashing using two different generations of kit: the 1974-vintage Matchbox of the -600, and last year's Sword model of the -800. Sword's kit offers many details that can be cobbled onto the -600 to turn it into a -700 jet, such as the engines, underwing details, and possibly the landing gear. As others on this board have pointed out, the Matchbox kit isn't bad, but it does have a few problems. I wanted to do a partial interior and pose the finished product with the door posed open invitingly for little VIPs. No crew figures on this one, however.
  2. After what seems like ages I am on the home straight with the Russian Whitley. I got the model from a member here for not much more than postage as he said he would never build it due to the poor moulding which showed up as dents on the wings and fuselage etc that needed filling. I took it on but for a pretty inexperienced modeller it has been a bit of a trial - some of it enjoyable. I must say though without the help and encouragement by many members on here I may well have given up. I related the tale yesterday about whilst trying to scrape off excess paint on the nose side window I managed to push the whole thing inside the 'plane which entailed me fishing it out and having to pare down the window to an interference fit not being able to access it any other way. Anyway I've painted it up courtesy of some colour plans furnished to me by a kind member and now it is gloss varnished awaiting decals, the end is in sight. Here's what it looked like when I got it, more flash than plastic! Also various parts had been short moulded so I had to fill in the gaps. It's been an education. Here it is stuck together with a bit of undercoat... And here it is now, painted up as a MKVII Coastal Command aircraft with a coating of gloss varnish awaiting the decals. Do you like my recycling box light tent? I realise it is rubbish compared to the stuff we see on here every day but in fairness I didn't have a lot to work with (that's my excuse anyway!) As an aside, due to making this model and reading a bit about Whitley's in WWII made me have a far greater appreciation of them than previously. Although they still looking very old fashioned with those thick wings and almost Edwardian design it was our heavy bomber at the outbreak of war and did some Sterling (no pun intended!) work.
