  1. Joining with this Dapol kit, Bought at Cheltenham Model Centre for £13.05, on 02 Dec 2020 - about the last time they were open. Parts, I'm quite impressed. I built a Dapol Battle of Britain in 2017, and the parts were quite warped. These are much more straight. And instructions, there's only one option for this build.
  2. Designed by Robert Riddles, these locomotives saw service from 1954 to 1968. The final one built (Evening Star) was the last steam locomotive built by British Rail.
  3. It is a number years since anyone has posted this venerable model onto BM, so I thought I would give it a go. Venerable indeed as shown by the copyright date Now on its third manufacturer this sprue shot shows a significant amount of flash, but luckily none of it is near delicate parts. I have purchased Dapol kits with significant moulding errors, this one seems OK. Dapol's warranty makes interesting reading. Especially as it would cost me most in transport costs & parking, to get to my LMS to return it than the kit cost. Will make an interesting build as Yellow and White are my two least favourite colours to brush paint. Airfix used to mould it in yellow plastic which actually was not much help if you primed the kit prior to painting. On with the build...
  4. BR Standard Class 9F 92220 Evening Star Dapol Kitmaster OO I have recently completed this for the Made in Britain II Group Build and thought that I would share my efforts here. I used the Dapol Kitmaster Evening Star kit and removed the moulded handrails before replacing them with Alan Gibson parts, I also replaced the simpler sections of pipework with Albion Alloys micro-tubing. The decals are from Fox Decals and nameplates are Modelmaster UK etch. I brush painted the green with Phoenix Precision BR Loco Green (Post '54). The couplings are from Smiths and other additional parts are GEM white metal. I then decided to have a look for some crew figures and came across a company called Modelu based in Wales, and they offer 3D printed crew figures in several scales. In the past I have bought crew and had difficulty getting them to fit, but these were perfect and once painted up they add that bit of life to the footplate. Future plans include the making of a small diorama with the loco running light, so at some point in the future you will probably see it making an appearance there too. by John Leigh, on Flickr by John Leigh, on Flickr by John Leigh, on Flickr by John Leigh, on Flickr by John Leigh, on Flickr
  5. Following a suggestion by @Mjwomack I have decided to have a go at a third build. If things go according to plan then I am hoping that I can complete them all. Kit sprue shots are below, lots of flash on the detail parts, so there will be plenty of cleaning up to do for a start. Wish me luck.
  6. Having made the assumption that the work I have carried out so far falls within the 25% rule I am going to include this as my second build. As can be seen in the photos, the only items that have been glued are the boiler and the lower frame halves, so I think that this is a fair assumption when considering the improvements (such as replacement of the handrails) I would like to make, I hope that this is OK. However, if there are any objections I would like to continue with the build but will not include final photos in the gallery. Evening Star was built at the Swindon Works in 1960 and, as well as being 999th standard class, was the last steam locomotive built by BR (though not numerically). She was the only class 9F to be named following a competition run by BR Western Region staff magazine, though other preserved 9F's have received names since. After five years service over the Western Region and Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway, 92220 was withdrawn and placed in storage. In 1966 the locomotive was towed to Crewe for overhaul and restoration and is part of the NRM's National Collection. More information can be found here Work carried out so far.
  7. Here is my build of the Dapol OO/HO Stephenson's Rocket (C046) I built the Airfix version in the Seventies and rather than build the one I have in my stash, I bought a Dapol version for a "just for fun" build. As turned out, it was fun! Dave
  8. Hi all! Finished my first ever loco kit recently! Please check out the link below and let me know what you think of the finished model (and also the quality/edit of the video) - constructive criticism extremely welcome! (it's the only way we get better right?) Not 100% happy that the wheels don't turn too freely, but hopefully I'll fix that on the next kit I build. Pretty content with the overall finish though. Thanks for reading guys!
  9. Hi All, Second entry in this GB. Popped in to Trains4U in P'boro (Work just up the road) for various tools and consumables for the A4 and this fell in the basket as well. Complete polar opposite of the A4 - Stephenson's Rocket was a ground breaking development in the very beginning of steam locomotive engineering. Introducing boiler tubes, the blastpipe and cylinders coupled directly to the driving wheels. It's the Dapol (Ex Airfix/Kitmaster) Rocket which I built at least 4 decades ago - Don't expect this one to move under its own steam though (Sorry) This is one that can be built at lunchtime at my desk - Something I wouldn't entertain doing with a whitemetal kit, elf and safety and all that....
