Just got back home from Dallas and the Wings Over Dallas put on by the CAF. It is their largest show. It was shut down due to one of their B-17s colliding with a P-63 King Cobra at the south end of the airport just before the runway area. The information as to how many people on board the B-17 has not been released nor has their status. The crash occurred during their flying routine with several B-17s, some B-25s, some P-51s, a B-24 and a P-63. At first, it was thought to be some pyro technics going off at the wrong time, but when the fire went out of control for the two airport firetrucks to contain, most people realized it was something else. The airshow was shut down and all spectators were ordered to leave the airport. When I left there were about 40 different first responder vehicles at the scene, along with a Med-Vac helicopter and a few news helicopters. The explanation as to what happened has not been released, but the bombers were lining up to portray a bomber sweep with fighter aircraft flying cover that would pass at a low level parallel to one of the runways running north and south where the air show crowd was gathered. It happened as the group was turning to approach the runway from the south. Please give your thoughts and prayers to the aircrew on the downed aircraft, their families, the first responders, and the medical staff as they will need support to get through this tragedy.

1/50 Artesania Latina revenue cutter Dallas

Hello, I have started building the Artesania Latina revenue cutter Dallas, 1815. During the early 19th century, the American Revenue Marine (Coast Guard) was engaged in a variety of roles, from enforcement of revenue laws to the suppression of slave trading and piracy. The Dallas is typical of those cutters employed by the Revenue Marine at that time. This is my second wooden scale model ship (my first was the Artesania Latina schooner Rhoda Mary, also posted on this website). This is still in its early stages but I thought I'd post some images of the build so far. I wasn't happy with the bow and stern fillers provided in the kit, so I added some balsa blocks to fill in allowing more surface area for the glue to bond to. The planking is going slowly as I only have enough plank clamps to do two planks per night, but it is beginning to take shape. As always, comments and suggestions are most welcome. Hi again all, I've slipped back to Phantoms for another brief journey in to my memory bank and slide files. This time I get away from the Nation Guard and sample the U.S. Navy reserve and U.S.M.C. Reserve. These were taken, again early morning, around the Dallas Naval Air Station and cover the three based F-4 units. Like my visits to the ANG site the units were preparing for the morning's operations. The Marines had just started to get active as my mate and I got to their ramp. Revenue Cutter - DALLAS - topsail schooner / Surprise class. Commisioned in 1816, five years of service. Hello! Finally finished! I hope you'll enjoy it. Before the pictures I'd like to say couple things about this model and building it itself. That was my first attempt to build a proper wooden model ship. Now when it's finished I can say, that I've chosen good. This is a really easy model if you know what you're doing and what to do. I wasn't For me it was a really painful build. Every step I took was careful, but also it was another step in the deep dark. The kit itself was probably good apart from the plans and instructions. A lot, I mean A LOT of stuff wasn't even mentioned in the instructions and if I haven't found some pictures of the same model I'd probably never finish it. I can see this if the kit was released for experienced modellers, but it clearly says in the prolog to the instructions that it is a beginners kit so I'd really expect some more detailed explanation about what to do and how.. About the build. I made couple quite big mistakes, starting with the planking which went too deep into stern and the rudder is not through the deck, furnishing of the deck isn't perfect either. Topmasts should be the same size but due to material shortage (well, I found the missing bit later on ) I had to shorten every bit of masting and then decided to leave one smaller for some reason (I don't really know why). Overall it's a quite good looking model anyways. Just need to put it on a nice and proper base. The one at the moment is just an unused shelf Take a look: Thanks! Bart- 15 replies
