As some of you may know I'm a Trustee at Sywell Aviation Museum and we have a small collection of cockpits together with our complete machines (unique Hunter F.2 WN904 & HP Jetstream 200 G-RAVL) on display. IMG_8995 by Ben Brown, on Flickr Our DHC Chipmunk T.10 WG419 was based at Sywell in the 50s and is now a 'Chippax', our DH Vampire T.11 XD599 is in the collection because Brooklands Aviation built them at Sywell post-war (they had to put a concrete pan at the end the of the grass runway because 'opening the taps' set fire to it!) and our most recent addition is a replica DH.89A Rapide cockpit. Many may remember the full size Rapide replica which was on display outside the Crowne Plaza Hotel at Speke Airport - it used to be the 30's terminal building. It was scrapped some time ago but one of the builders saved the cockpit and kindly donated it to us last year. It has been restored as G-AJHO - bought by Brooklands Aviation in 1947 and used as a hack until she was sold in the mid 60s. If you would like to see some pics of the restored Rapide cockpit (or 'mockpit) click here to our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/SywellAviationMuseum/posts/pfbid025u7i135q8cwYu8yGA7Nmwmq3cDJapgw2YimjTs1GEswZuKHcFR5zqJQ5xQZV9bENl IMG_8993 by Ben Brown, on Flickr As Arctic Decals have kindly done the transfers for 'JHO I am building the complete Heller kit but had a spare which I needed to raid as a couple of the original kit's struts were broken. As such I had an incomplete redundant kit and some spare decals so I sliced the cockpit off, built a trolley per ours and added the step at the back. It has no interior just a seat - the full size will be used, like our Chippie is, for kids to 'fly'. IMG_8992 by Ben Brown, on Flickr Hope they make you smile TT

I'd like to share with you my new model - DH. Vampire Mk.I from Special Hobby in 1/72. Painting with Tamiya XF-82 Ocean Gray (RAF), AK Interactive RAF Medium Sea Gray BS381C/637 and Revell 68 Dark Green RAF. Dark wash from MIG Ammo. Finishing with Revell Clear matt. Unfortunately, the decals for the lower RAF roundels were damaged and I replaced them with decals from A-Model kit, which have a much lighter blue color. My bad. Thanks in advance for your comments.

My father-in-law, Doug , wanted to play his part in WWII but because he was in a reserved occupation as an electrician, he was classed as essential to the war effort. Towards the end of the war he was then able to sign up to the RAF and went to Canada for his training flying Tiger Moths, Ansons and Cessna Cranes. When he came back to England he was posted to RAF North Luffenham, 102 Flight Refresher School for conversion training to jets as pilots were needed for the Korean War, maybe. Fellow member on Britmodeller @Ghostbase , his father was also stationed there at the same time and he had photos of his father and Doug and also a picture of the Spitfire F.22 markings. With this information and a picture of the Vampire I was able to complete this part of Doug's life. Regards Robert

My next project is going to be my first resin kit. I picked this up at the WASMEX model expo swap meet. i have always liked Vampires and this really caught my fancy. Here are the deceptively simple instructions: A nice decal sheet: Of course it has to be the RAAF bird: The resin itself: I've handled resin before as details parts, but never a complete kit. It looks like a significant amount of time will be taken cleaning the parts up of flash etc. And on the main airframe there appear to be some pinholes that will need filling as well, you can just seem them in the close up: I know I will need to use superglue and be careful of any sanding dust, but any advice the collective could give me would be gratefully received. First queries: I will need to do some background reading on the colour scheme, I am assuming the cockpit will be black? Will there need to be any weight put in the front to stop it being a tail sitter? I am a bit worried it may be too much for the undercarriage. I was playing with the idea of semi-permanently mounting it on a base.
