  1. Hi, The KLM civil machines exploited in NEI area were painted in camouflage in December 1941 as a result of an outbreak of WW2 in Pacific area. Some of those machines were then evacuated to Australia. Photo of DC-3 shot down by Japan Zeros which landed on Australia beech shows machine in two tone camo, so likely standard NEI "old/fresh leaves" scheme with civil registration on. However here https://www.goodall.com.au/australian-aviation/dc-5/douglas-dc-5.htm in a very detailed history of every DC-5 it is said that the Netherland's DC-5 were painted in Decmber 1941 in olive drabfrom top and some (?) light color from bottom. Does it means, that already in NEI before Japan invasion they have US paint and anticipated future incorporation of DC-5s into USAAF ? It is nonsense... The machine freshly incorporated to USAAF (having still visible overpainted civil registration) look like having two tone camo on very likely yellow "426" on tail (the photos from cited above web page, only for discussion purposes): but not on this photo with camo and rather single color on top https://www.goodall.com.au/australian-aviation/dc-5/img12.jpeg Photos taken later shows definitely uniformed top - this time I can believe that this is US paint (olive drab) . However, the code VHCXB does not looks like white (as is described) but rather some color, perhaps lt grey... Any comments or additional data on DC-5 colors and markings in Australia will appreciated... Regards J-W
  2. I have decided to post this build here as it was an actual 'aircraft' made and therefore not a "What if" In 1969 the Czechoslovakians made a film whose name translates to "The Sky Raiders" or "Riders in the Sky". They needed a Wellington bomber which could at least taxi. However, none were available so they had the bright idea of converting a Lisunov Li-2 (licence built DC3) to look like a Wellington ! In the early 90's I came across a February 1973 Air Enthusiast which had an article entitled "Lisunov's Wellington" all about this curious conversion. I always wanted to attempt this project and recently found many photographs on the web of this film prop. 10 by arhills, on Flickr 04 by arhills, on Flickr Here are two photos found on web IMG_0748 by arhills, on Flickr IMG_0749 by arhills, on Flickr Two images from the Air Enthusiast article. Sorry about my rubbish efforts at photography 03 by arhills, on Flickr As can be seen there was an issue with the width of the fuselage which is why they had to cut slots for the propeller. In 1/72 its about 5mm wider ! Will need to space my fuselage halves and make oversize turrets. IMG_0752[3139] by arhills, on Flickr IMG_0747 by arhills, on Flickr The general arrangement drawing gives an idea of the relative sizes. Not only that, but it is using a low-wing airframe to mimic a mid-wing. The film makers were aware of the 'humpiness' of the Welligton nacelles and porked the Li-2 ones up a bit to look right. Over the years I have come to the conclusion that the prop aircraft was much longer than a Wellington and I just happened to have a spare Contrail Warwick in the stash which will provide the extra length. This has to be on the 'table' for my model club virtual meeting on June 25th. We are still 'meeting', albeit online 🙂

    Nor-Fly DC3

My second entry for this great GB from my stash - Italeri C47 with Nor-Fly decals, Norwegian airline from the 70's. This machine, LN-KLV used to be a regular visitor to Aberdeen, Dyce in 73, 74 before being replaced with Convair 440 equipment. The kit is Italeri which has nice recessed panel lines and is regarded as the best C47/DC3 in 1/72 scale. I will need to cut out a couple of passenger windows but I wont be building the passenger interior I dont think. Decals are Norwegian company Lima November - a mix of laser and silk screen for some reason - they look smart! Obligatory pre-start pics L Looking forward to a 'big' airliner!
  4. Hi all This is my latest production and last of the backlog for RFI. Back in 1983 I had a flight in a DC3 at an airshow at Dyce, Aberdeen. The aircraft was G-AMPO of Air Atlantique in their, then new, Green Stripe livery. I loved the look of this livery and the memory of the flight has lasted. When I returned to modelling I was browsing through BM and found an example of G-AMHJ in the Air Atlantique blue stripe livery, That set me looking for a set of the green stripe decals by 26decals. I then looked for a suitable kit of the DC3, winning an old ESCI kit on eBay for a very good price. Nice to see that the image on the box was the aircraft I intended to build, albeit in an older scheme, and with a previous owner. The build was fairly straightforward with good fit of the kit. I did some alterations to make the kit as close to the plane I flew in as possible. I cut and glazed some extra cabin windows and scratched some extra seats in the cabin so that it was the 32 seater I was in. In hindsight that seemed a waste of time because you can't see in the cabin. The 26Decals were excellent and easy to work with although there were a coupled of errors; the emergency exit marks for the cabin roof say 'EXIT HERE IN EMERGENCY' when it should be 'CUT HERE IN EMERGENCY'. I have left these as they were. The other issue with the decals was the plane has three emergency exits through windows but there is only 2 on the decals sheet. I resolved this by painting a red square onto the decal film, seems to work ok. While the plane I flew in was basically out of the paint-shop I have chosen to present my interpretation as G-AMPO appeared in 1985, looking quite grubby and bearing recently added Air Luton titles. My presentation is just before the new titles were added. On to the pictures. Thanks for looking. Graeme
  5. When I started model building a few years ago, one of the first planes I wanted to build was a Douglas DC3. Such great planes. Recently, I came across a cheap 1/144 Minicraft kit of a DC6 in Pan Am livery, and that led me to find another 1/144 DC3 and buy a sheet of Pan Am livery decals for it, so I could have a pair. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a Pan Am set for a DC4, but when I found a decal set for the old, defunct Australian airline, Ansett, I was happy with that particular second best option. So here's a few shots of my hardworking Douglas fleet. Though the DC6 came with Pan Am decals, the kit was very old and the decals were unusable. So I scanned the decals and printed out my own set. One trick with the DC6 was to install lead sinkers in the nose (otherwise it would sit on its tail). I've always liked the Pan Am livery of that era. The Ansett Cargomaster decals were very nice, so any blemishes in the plane are entirely of my doing. Not sure why, but I really like the cargo door. There's an old Cargo-version DC-4 in a local aircraft museum just south of Sydney that they're slowly converting over to a passenger configuration, and so it was a real pleasure to pop down and have a look at a 1:1 version while I was building my little 1/144 kit.
  6. Here are the first four aircraft built as a project to represent aircraft associated (by me) with Filton airfield from the 1960s until the airfield's untimely closure in 2012. There will be more to follow, with an F111 and Concorde in the pipeline. All aircraft will be built in 1/144 scale, which is a little limiting but does mean the collection will not take over the entire house. More pics and details of the individual builds to follow. Some aircraft associated with Filton airfield in the 60s and 70s by jonbru0903, on Flickr From left to right in the picture above we have: G-AXLR, the VC10 test bed for the RB211 engine, initially designed for the Lockheed Tristar; D-BABC, the third prototype VFW-614 based a Filton for a few weeks as part of the development programme for the Rolls-Royce/SNECMA M45H engine; XA903, probably the third best known Vulcan, used for testing the Blue Steel missile among other things prior to arriving at Filton to be modified to carry the Rolls-Royce/SNECMA Olympus 593 engine for Concorde. Later it also tested the Turbo-Union RB199 for the MRCA/Tornado; Finally, on the right, G-AMPO a DC-3 used in the communications and transport role, primarily in relation to the Concorde flight test programme based at Fairford.
