  1. Hi All, This was actually my last build of 2014 and is part of my Yellow Wings collection. I've always thought there's a great charm to this stubby little aircraft so building a colourful USN version was always going to happen. The CA kit is, in general, an enjoyable thing to build but does have a few things to look out for with regard to fit. Nothing that a bit of time spent studying the instructions and dry fitting doesn't sort out though. The markings were done using a combination of kit decals - mainly for the Felix emblem - and Montex masks for national insignia. I hope you all enjoy the photos. Cheers all, Roger
  2. As I seem to be on a Battle of Britain kick, I'm starting Classic Airframes Do-17Z (1/48). It's a typical CA kit, very ambitious but quite crude (in places) in execution. Heavy moldings, poor fit, and lots and lots of flash. Relatively thin, crisp transparencies that are slightly cloudy right now, but might clear up with Future. The cockpit has some very nice resin, but it fits in a blank forward fuselage with a truly horrible horizontal seam. I'm starting by adding all the missing interior structure - stringers, frames etc. When this is done, I'll scatchbuild the smaller, missing details, wiring the panel, etc. I'm hiding the seam by putting a .005" skin where visible, and putting the stringers on top of it. There's lots of glass, and I hope it will clear up enough to see the added details. Thanks for looking, Colin
  3. Well, I see from the WIP thread that it's been about a year since I started this one. Progress has been in fits and starts, but it's done now! Without banging on too much about accuracy, I think it compares quite favourably to the new Trumpeter offering. The Aircraft - P6987 was delivered to 263 Squadron in January 1941. She served with the squadron in two separate spells: Jan-Nov '41 and Jun-Dec '42. During her first stint with 263, she was flown on 19 operational sorties. These were mostly interception patrols and convoy patrols, with a couple of Mandolin (later known as Rhubarb) and Rodeo missions thrown in. I've modelled her as she might have appeared shortly after delivery to the squadron in early 1941, with the Night port wing underside and Sky spinners and tail band. This aircraft was eventually lost on 7th December 1942 during Roadstead 45: an attack on shipping near the Channel Islands. On this day the squadron lost two aircraft and their pilots. P6987 was flown by W/O Donald McPhail RCAF, who was killed when his aircraft crashed after being hit by flak. The CO of 263 Squadron, S/L R.S. Woodward, was also killed during the same attack. The Model - This the later issue of the Classic Airframes kit (with injected canopy). The only aftermarket is a pair of new wheels recently released from Barracuda Studios. Most of the panel lines were rescribed to get a consistent depth. Markings are a mixture of paint and decals. A few extra details were scratchbuilt: - new vac formed undercarriage doors - aerial mast from brass - canopy mirror - wingtip nav lights WIP here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234944232-148-westland-whirlwind-classic-airframes/ Thanks for looking; any feedback welcome! Regards, Jason
  4. I am kind of new here And don't really know how to start - this post that is. Well, like many, I made my last kit around 30 plus years ago and I feel like making some kits again. But boy did thing change over 30 years! Not only are the kits so much more detailed, but there is such a large choice of stuff to build them! That goes from glue to filler to paint and much more. I did a lot of reading to see what is the best stuff to use and I quickly learned that the BEST stuff doesn't exist as people have a wide range of preferences. So I have to do it the hard way and find out by myself. So I thought it is maybe helpful showing my first build here in the hope to get some feedback and more important, some tips - and encouragement if things turn sour. As the heading says, I like to build the Classic Airframes 1/48 Fabric Wings Hawker Hurricane L1599 in the markings from Squadron Leader John Gillan, using the kit decals together with CMK five spoked wheels and the Aires Wheel Bay for the Hasegawa kit (of which the Classic Airframes kit is based on). This won't be an OOB build as I like to correct some of the errors with the Classic Airframes kit, of which several had been copied from the Hasegawa kit. But in addition, the wing is too short and the landing lights are at the wrong spot which I hope to correct too. No shortage in reference material. But nonetheless, I am sure that I will have lots of questions during the build of the kit. Unfortunately I have limited time, so my build won't be fast - so I better get started. Cheers, Peter
  5. I was fortunate enough to pick up a Classic Airframes Canberra B.2 for a song at a local show and I'v decided to dive in right away. Poking through On Target Profiles 7, I figure I'll do it up as a TT.18, serial no. WJ636: Not being anything close to an expert on the Canberra, I've got a few questions: 1. Aside from the winch pylons which should be fairly simple to scratch build (I'm going to forget about the Ruston winches themselves), are there any other obvious differences between the B.2 and the TT.18? 2. What is a good Tamiya or Gunze match/mix for Light Aircraft Grey? Are there any other acrylic brands that offer it out of the bottle? 3. I'm all set for serials & checkers, but does anyone know a decal source for the 100 Sqn skull & crossbones badge? Does anyone have one they could spare? TIA, Tony Bell
  6. Ok this is my 4th build on the go at once, must be totally mad!! I decided to bring a bit of to this group build and build RNZAF TA-4K done up in a special "one off" colour scheme to celebrate their 50th Anniversary in 1987 For the base I’m going to try and bash a Classic Airframes TA-4J into some sort of shape so as it at least looks like the RNZAF TA-4K. Not too many mods required to do this luckily so it will be pretty much out of the box build. This box looks like it's been through the wars! It even comes with resin bits! The only extra of course is the Model Alliance decals, which are execllent and now very rare so I'd better not stuff this one up!!! Special care though will be needed on the base finish as the gold is bound to show any minor blemishes. Should look pretty spectacular once it’s done, hopefully a nice quick simple build......maybe! Plus if there are any experts on the TA-4K that would like to help provide info on the mods required, they'd be gratetfully received. I have info but am always happy to receive expert advice.
  7. Gday All THought I might dive in at this late stage on a complete impulse after perusing my stash the other day, having been inspired by this GB. I have been neglecting my theme of RAAF a/c with recent builds, so thought "what the hell, lets have a go with the CA walrus, I mean, how hard can it be, what can possibly go wrong!!" Anyway, to start off, the obligatory box and contents shots I'm not a big one for WIP's as everyone gets to see your fails, but we'll see how we go. Stay tuned Bruce
  8. Hi all, as some of you have seen in the WIP pages, I have been building an Avro Anson Mk.1 in memory of my grandfather, as well as in honour of all of the unsung heroes of training command during WW2. they worked just as hard to train the air crews of the UK and Commonwealth to fly, navigate, bomb and stay alive. My grandfather was stationed at RAF Wigtown initially, followed by a spell at RAF Bishops Court in NI, as a radio engineer on the Ansons. So here it is- the premise being that when the aircrews got home, their day was done, but the groundcrews would work long into the night to get the planes ready for the next sorties (and often going up with the aircraft as a gunner during the day, in case it was needed). Thank you for looking!
  9. HI all - she's finished at last. You can find the WIP here: http://www.britmodel...=234923967&st=0 In brief - fuselage lengthened, and main UC postions moved aft to give more rake. Brush painted with a mix of Aeromaster and Tamiya acrylics, detail painting with vallejo and Citadel. Kit decals used to represent VZ672 481 Q of 809 Sqn FAA on board HMS Vengeance 1951. A bit of light weathering applied, but nothing too much. ( yes the wingtip pitot tube is in the wrong place for an NF21- I realised after I'd CA'ed it in DOH!) Hope you like her. Jonners
  10. I have started painting my third adversary TA-4F/J (so far). It wil be finished as #13 in a scheme that looks a bit like used on the Japanese RF-4E; http://a4skyhawk.org...lay/154657i.jpg It's a standard Hasegawa TA-4J built OOB. After adding the last major bits today I pre-shaded it, followed by the tan (Xtracolor FS10219) and the Euro I green (Xtracolor FS14092). The last green will be a Model Master green (FS34097), and since it's flat (and thus drying faster) I will wait until the first two colours have dried before applying it. I don't want the paint to crack. Today's first progress: As usual camo is done freehand. The decals will come from the Classic Airframes TA-4J. The CA painting guide is not entirely correct so I'm primarily using reference pictures to determine the pattern. My two previous TA-4F/Js: I am also working on five other TA-4F/Js, an A-4E, an A-4F Super Fox, an A-4K and an A-4M. All TA-4s and the A-4E/F will also be adversaries. Jens
