  1. Hello everyone.. I am building the old Airfix Cessna Birddog as a USAF Raven from Laos. I know they only carried a basic 4 digit serial on the tail and usually nothing else. My question is did they carry a walkway or Identifier panel on top of the wing ? Every photo I’ve come across was taken from the ground or in level flight. Nothing from above showing the top of the wing. If it turns out as nothing great but don't want to find out afterwards that I needed a walkway or day-glo panel on top. Any help or photo’s would be great. Ive already checked quite a few webpages and nothing more than the types already mentioned. Thank you in advance. Dennis
  2. Why build one Bird Dog when you have two? Actually I have three, but one of the two that I bought second-hand on the cheap is missing a couple of parts, although it could probably be salvaged. So that leaves just the two: My intention is simple: Build both the USAF and South Vietnamese subjects represented in the standard boxing: Of course, the first (nay the main hurdle) is the usual one: colour. The grey is presumably meant to be a matt version of ADC Grey, but I don't know if I have anything suitable in my Humbrol and Revell collection. I will also need the regular gloss finish ADC Grey for at least one kit in the upcoming Interceptor GB, so this really matters. Hu 64 (see above) seems too dark. In a much later boxing, it is Hu 166, which is a satin finish out of the tin. When I built an re-issued Airfix U-2 some years ago, I went with the suggested Hu 40 gloss, but who knows how realistic that actually was? For the Vietnamese aircraft, what is the correct shade of green? Is it Hu 86 light olive (old boxings, like the above), Hu 155 olive drab (as per the later boxing), or something else entirely? For the bulk of the interior, I will go with Hu 226 Interior Green, not that you can seem much beneath the transparencies. The side and top windows are amongst the thickest I've seen, typical of Airfix kits of the period.
  3. Hello everyone... Im presenting my 1/72 vintage Airfix Cessna Birddog. This model has traveled around the globe to get to me. It started life in the U.K., from there it went to Australia at some point. A year ago when I expressed interest to wanting one. @Admiral Puff was not only kind enough to give it to me but he hand delivered it all the way from Australia. He was here in the states for the IPMS USA Nationals in 2019 and was coming to Chicago after so we got to meet and exchange the kit. I built this as Cessna 2799 flying out of Laos with the USAF Ravens. It represents a very specific moment in October of 1971. The Ravens were USAF volunteer pilots flying as Forward air Controllers over Laos. They operated fast and loose with rules as they were officially never in Laos so dressed as civilians. The aircraft were maintained by Air America and carried nothing more than a simple 4 or 6 digit tail number and International orange stripe on top of the wing for quick I.D. from other aircraft. So I present Raven 2799 for you. Yes the load-out looks quite unrealistic but as you can see by the following photo some Cowboy decided to go with it for a photo opportunity. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, or visit the build thread. Dennis
