I am fond of many IMSA race cars but two I’m particularly fond of are Mustangs and Celicas. I have been thinking they are quite similar in IMSA form. The IMSA Toyota Celica doesn’t exist in 1:24 ( apart from a undetailed pricy resin kit ) so I’m thinking Id love to use this Mustang kit that I have in the stash without decals to make a IMSA Celica! Having said that I am mainly planning to do this by the use of paint/livery choice, and by potentially opening up some of the front areas.. A more cosher on brand route is attempting painting the project it a modern Ford Mustang GT3 livery or at least the colours used in them lastly an option is doing it in Polymatic Grey of my stock Ford Mustang build. Sacrilegious thoughts that might trigger some but I’m excited to finally build something similar to a IMSA Celica 😀.

This is my finished Aoshima Toyota Celica LB 1978 (kit #049198). Paint is Model Master Turquoise Green over Tamiya TS-50 Mica Blue. The use of the blue undercoat was suggested by a family member with a graphic design background as an attempt to bring out the richness of the green suggested by the rattle-can lid. The thickness of the lacquer paint meant the blue did not permeate even the first coat of green, however, so the end result is almost like a metallic pastel; if such a thing exists. The model was built out of the box. This is an update / reissue of an old motorised kit, so the details are not great; especially the suspension and chassis. I decided not the install the very chrome front and rear bumpers as I liked to look of the bumper delete. The kit box-art and instructions also called for chromed front and rear light clusters, but I went with other versions in the kit that I painted Tamiya Champagne Gold for accent against the green. The wheel spokes are also Champagne Gold. Grant.

So to give @nimrod54 's rally build some company in the GB I'm going with this Tamiya kit but modified with some aftermarket Studio27 decals (for the 1995 Swedish Rally), this particular car (17) was driven by a couple of Finns: Grönholm Marcus and Silander Voitto, however it had to retire due to gearbox issues. Plenty of Celica's did finish however - the newer 205 model (round headlights) coming in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 9th, another of this model (185 with the pop-up lights) coming in 8th. Pretty good year for Toyota you might think, however this is the season they got caught out for being naughty using illegal turbo restrictors on the new model so got a year ban for 96 and Kankkunen, Auriol and Schwarz (that's the 3rd, 4th and 9th wins in Sweden) were stripped of points in the championship in 95. The reason I went for these decals is the main sponsorship (Castrol) pattern swishes are identical to the Tamiya kit (1993 Monte Carlo) so I'll have some backups if it all goes horribly wrong when trying to get them to conform around the very curvatious body! I've also got some Reji Model snow wheels and tyres, since the kit supplied ones are rather wide looking slicks. I think I've also got some window masks somewhere for this kit, if I can dig them out. Parts shots, etc. once I get around to starting it.
