  1. My next build will be the ARDU Mirage IIIO A3-2 in the yellow and green scheme, using the Kinetic kit and Caracal decals, plus a bit of PE from the Eduard zoom set. The box shot: I've made a start - assembled the cockpit tub and sprayed it black - not really worth photographing yet. More soon. cheers Julian
  2. I've been on a major lockdown Hawk binge this year so far, with more to come. This one is a heavily modified T-45C Goshawk based on the Italeri kit, plus Caracal decals for the eyecatching Redhawks scheme worn by a US Navy/Marines aircraft of VT-21 at NAS Kingsville, Texas. I bought the decals to do one as a Strike Test aircraft supporting the F-35 programme, but this was just too good to miss. Main changes were the underfuselage strake, new wing tips, new tailplane tips and the addition of full length Slats. I also dropped the flaps. Things I didn't do - raise the fin/rudder or widen the nose gear bay. and the flock so far...... FredT
  3. I was "503'd" when I posted the original and it now seems I have made a duplicate - please ignore!
  4. Hello, this was suppose to be completed for the Specialist group build but l was unable to complete it till now. The kit is from Airfix and the decals from Caracal. l ended up using 2 sheets from Caracal as l messed up the walkways on my first attempt. The decals are excellent and the white is really solid. lt is painted with Xtracrylix Gloss Sea Blue and matt coated afterwards. I added the heat shield on the underside of the exhaust. Hope you enjoy it.. Robert
  5. I was at an airshow at Seymour-Johnson AFB a few years ago and really liked seeing the T-38C with it's Navy Gloss Gray and Aircraft Gray camouflage. When I saw that it had duct tape over the various hatches I thought it would make a fun addition to a nice scheme. I added some new Martin Baker MK 16 seats that came with the aircraft's upgrade and some silver decal strips for the Alabama Chrome. Caracal decals were excellent replacements for the kit's awful ones supplied and the Caracal paint and decal guide provided great references. A bonus was they also included decals for the upgraded seats.
  6. Greetings, fellow styrene surgeons! Caracal has just released their second Fury sheet- some colorful subjects here! Just wanted you to know; possible stocking stuffer? Heads up, @Sabrejet @Corsairfoxfouruncle @RidgeRunner! Mike http://www.caracalmodels.com/cd72076.html
  7. Hi all, I got to the decaling stage on my Academy 1/72 F-15D this afternoon, using Caracal's Lakenheath F-15 set. I have to admit, my heat sunk when I saw that they were printed by Cartograf. Every time I have attempted to use decals printed by Cartograf they've silvered, and this sheet is no exception. The decals themselves seem to be really thick and just won't submit to any decal solvent in my arsenal*. I've also tried the diluted Klear trick, and that didn't work either. They just won't bed down onto the model and the silvering is as bad as I've ever seen. I've been using other decals over the past few days, including those from the Airfix 1/72 Lightning F.6, Modeldecal and Xtradecal and these have been fine, so I'm pretty sure it's not me. Has anyone else had issues with Cartograf printed decals and managed to overcome them? As it is, I'm contemplating having to try to pull off the decals that are on there and abandon the twelve quid decal sheet and look elsewhere. To say I'm displeased is putting it mildly. The F-15 fought me all the way through assembly and having beaten it into submission and getting a pretty decent paintjob on it, to have it ruined by decals that won't play ball is kinda gutting. Right now, any advice would be gratefully received! Cheers, Mark. * Microsol, Mr Mark Softer, Solvaset and Humbrol Decalfix.
  8. For those of you who already have or are thinking about getting the A-Model DH-104 Dove injected kit, I just got an email from Caracal announcing that they have just released two decal sheets, each with civil as well as military markings. I have attached a link to their 1/72 decal sheets so you can see them. I was also told the 1/72 FJ-2 decal sheet artwork is being done now, and it is next in line, I believe. I need to point out that I receive nothing from the guys at Caracal for any endorsement or comment on their products, other than being a very satisfied customer and enjoy talking to the Caracal crew at our Texas contests. I personally can't wait for the FJ's! I would suggest, however, that if you want either of the two Dove sheets, that you get them now, as I have a feeling they are going to sell out quickly- like several of their other sheets! 9. You wait for ages then three come along... First Tony O'Toole showed his beautiful French Suez machine, then Camper1 followed it with his excellent USAF ANG machine and bringing up the rear is my 15th TRS machine. It is the old Heller kit that I picked up in a bargain box at the modellers paradise that is Halifax Modellers World. I think it dates from the early 1980s and is a really simple kit unlike the recent Tan models one. The Tan Models kit is great but it costs five times as much as this old warrior. I used the lovely Caracal decals to create a machine of the 15th TRS 67th TRW based out of Kadena AFB in 1957. Though designed for the Tan kit, they fit the Heller kit without any modification. The Heller kit has really weak connection points for the undercarriage and my normal method of drilling and pinning wasn't possible as the wing top is very thin. After the Kittyhawk F-101C this was a refreshing change and sometimes simple is best. Thanks for looking.
  10. So I was dinking around with my stash and realized that over the years, I had accumulated a variety of MiG-29 and Su-27 kits. Part of the issue of not starting them was not having any idea which scheme to do, but now that I have so many kits and decals, I thought, why not do a bunch at once? Presenting.... THE MIG-29 SINGLE TYPE SOLO BUILD!!!! There would be no time limit on this, and no limit to how many I will do. I might even add more as I go along (eg when the new MiG-29SMT kit comes out). I might not even do them sequentially, as I would segway into other projects to avoid burning out. Anyway here's what I have for starters: Nothing is set in stone, but I will most likely build a MiG-29N out of the Trumpeter kit, an Indian bird out of one of the Italeri kits, an Iranian bird out of the one one top of the box, either a Bangledeshi or Burmese one out of the Airfix, with the possibility of getting one of the new redbox Airfix kits for those awesome Czech markings. For the Condor boxings, I'l thinking of a Ukrainian ground attack example for the 9-13 aka MiG-29S, and maybe converting the MiG-29SMT into the UPG, if I can figure out the external differences. Of course being a Russian bird, I'll need on in Russian markings, so that's what the Zvezda kit's for. I also have an eye out for the newer, upcoming Trumpeter and Zvezda kits. I haven't figured out what to do with the UB yet, I'll have to see what cool schemes there are out there. Finally, I will likely do one more as a what-if (Finnish or USAF Aggressor maybe?) Anyway I hope I can maintain some steam on this very ambitious project. I'm also hoping this might get some of you guys to do the same. Construction starts tonight!
  11. Hi all, Well, here's (almost) the first duplicate entry into the Group Build - but Muzz has the decals for Red 40 (low-viz crest) whilst I've opted for Red 56 (Red / White crest) to be done as it was at RIAT 2015. To be made from the GWH Early boxing (which also contains the Late parts) plus some extras. First the box lid and the sprues and finally the goodies Eduard zoom cockpit set Caracal decals (now out of stock) Model Master turned brass static wicks Some Eduard Brassin pylons - much more detail than kit and aircraft was displayed with two empty pylons per wing A few resin bits left over from an earlier Eduard / Academy build Attack Squadron Polish detail set (resin aerials, cockpit extras and photoetch) This is going to be a busy time with From Russia and Made in Britain already ongoing, not to mention F-15 starting before this one finishes but hopefully I will get this finished by the deadline. Regards Mike
  12. AH-1W Super Cobra NTS HMLA-467 9/11 tribute the plan for the time being is to do the following mashine; AH-1W BuNo. 160820, HMLA-467 in tribute markings (FDNY 9/11 tribute scheme) Caracal decals provided the inspiration and will provide the decals I hope! (I still have to order them!! ) http://caracalmodels.com/cd48116.html http://www.rs.nato.int/article/news/tribute-to-new-york-fire-department-ladder-company-patrols-afghan-sky.html but I got hold of the necessary conversion set from Olimp models (NTS update and new exhaust shrouds), was a bit hard to find I have to say! Only Then! I got the kit locally in the store should have the 20mm cannon from Master somewhere in the stash... and then- there is nothing more out there that could complicate/ lengthen the build! not even PE from Eduard.... thanks Craig for some tips already in his thread (rotors turn wrong in the kit!!!!) already started to cut plastic and resin
  13. MQ-9 Reaper French Airforce 1/33 "Belfort" operation Barkhane 1/48 Kinetic kit reboxed by Revell decals: he excellent ones from Caracal Models WiP: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234992379-mq-9-reaper-french-airforce-133-belfort-operation-barkhane-148/ finally finished! was definitely more than a weekend project as initially planned! first, I identified the need to know a bit more about the Reaper, then I noticed that France operates a more modern version than the kit represented, then I needed to modify,....etc. you know this, don't you? but here you are all the necessary mods: , no photoshop, he! just natural sunlight reflection! thanks for comments! Salut, Werner
  14. JF-17 Thunder 26 Squadron Pakistan Air Force – Peshawar Air Base 2014 I don’t often think about Pakistani stuff when it comes to modelling. However, having seen the two 26 Sqn JF-17s at Farnborough in 2010 I was moved to invest in a Trumpeter 1/72 kit. And a really nice modern kit it is too. It feels like a 1/48 kit reduced to 1/72 size – or at least that’s the impression when you see the level of detail included in things like the undercarriage wells, cockpit interior, etc. The original looks like a cross between an F-16 and a Grippen and is a genuine ‘4th generation’ jet from a joint Chinese / Pakistani project, with advanced aerodynamics, fly-by-wire and digital avionics. It is supposedly called a ‘JF-17’ to show that it’s one-up on the F-16! Be careful if you build one though. The kit is very ‘Chinese’ rather than ‘Pakistani’. I found that the Pakistani version has a Martin Baker Mk.16 seat rather than the Chinese seat in the kit. A pity, because most of the usable PE in the kit goes on the seat! I say ‘usable’ because much of the PE provided is supposed to make up the engine exhaust nozzle, but mine was in the bin in no time and I opted for the easier (and actually better looking) plastic nozzle. The JF-17 uses the same engine as the Mig 29 so there may be some resin stuff out there somewhere also. There is also some very fine PE for the HUD, which I did use. The instructions give the undercarriage legs and wells colour as ‘dark blue-grey’ which I found is OK for the Chinese version, but white seems the predominant colour for Pakistani machines. The stores are all Chinese also. I didn’t find this out until I had completed mine, but Pakistani drop tanks are Mirage III/V – like, with different fins from those in the kit. I used the Caracal decal sheet – and very nice it is too. It provides the only source of the 26 Sqn ‘Black spider’ fin markings displayed at Farnborough. Overall a very enjoyable project.
