  1. The still very good Tamiya FBVI in the markings of the Canadian squadron N°418 mount of Flight Lt Lr A Kipp RCAF April 44. I have used the old CMK cockpit, not so good, Ultracast exhausts and mudguards, Master 3,03 Browning and Verlinden ammo boxes. The inside tubular structure of the canopy was made from scratch with evergreen rods. Apart from the character, no decals were used, home made masks did the job. Colors are Mr Color RAF set range, lacquers. A very pleasant project. Thanks for watching, and any comments are welcome of course! 2. Hi All, OK so a slight cheat, I did complete a 1/24 Citroen 2CV having been given the kit to go with my car! This got me buying a cheapo Amazon modelling kit and basic airbrush and having been bitten by the bug, went back to my roots with this Airfix Spitfire. Youtube taught me much, and showed up some of my mistakes. Also led me to go for a CMK cockpit set as I enjoy making things at least as much as painting them. I think most of my issues have direct links to scale. The canopy was cut, to display it open, and even with sanding down the rear sections, then wet and dry and then Humbrol clear it is neither thin enough or clear enough. Airfix give you some oxygen bottles to fix in the rear fuselage, they are there but you can't see em. Weathering is also hard in scale. If truly to scale you won't see it with the naked eye so I went for it being a model and a representation and so I can weather a bit more but if you zoom in it ain't subtle. This was my umpteenth go. I used weathering pencils and I think I am going to have to go the oils route as the seem to offer better control, blending, colour fade etc. Likewise panel lines, I didn't want a grid effect but did want to see them from 2ft away. So compromise again. I used a thin grey enamel wash for all the panels except control surface which were in a black acrylic (which I had bought early on). I certainly think the elevators are too stark but you have to stop somewhere! Painting was airbrush enamels, acrylic gloss, decals and weathering, acrylic matt, more weathering, more acrylic matt. I went for a light grey underside as I didn't fancy black and white, sorry purists but in 1/72 I feared it would be a bit odd. In a nod to ancient history and my little Airfix modelling book of the 1970's the aerial is stretched sprue. So much learnt and much to learn. I have started a Tamiya 109E 1/72, something to do while the paint dries and also have the Arma Hobby expert Hurricane with more PE, waiting in the wings. Disappointed with my cut cockpit, I ordered some vacuform ones, for the 109 and Hurricane, but to be honest they are not much thinner and lack some detail. The Arma Hobby kit comes with the open canopy option so I'll go with that. For the 109 I will be cutting again to open the cockpit so the vacuform my get incorporated, especially if i don't cut straight. Finally these are shots from my phone camera, not only am I in awe of some of the other builds, the quality of the photography is also great, so more to learn here too.
