  1. Bloch M.B. 210 (vol.3 of the Illustrated History of Romanian Aeronautics) by Horia Stoica, Dan Antoniu and Vasile Radu I`d like to bring to the attention of folks here a book on a rather niche subject: the career of the French Bloch M.B.210 bomber in the Romanian Air Force. It is part of the series "Illustrated History of Romanian Aeronautics", just like the titles dedicated to the Hurricane and Bf 109E which I have reviewed here before. Just as for the others, I have payed for my own copy of this book. The text is bilingual (Romanian and English) with every page being split between the two languages. Largely, this is an album that brings together many photos of the M.B.210 that I haven`t seen before, accompanied by commentary and chunks of text describing how the bomber came to be, how it was acquired by Romania and its service thereafter. Romania ordered 24 machines, but it only received and operated 10 which were flown in starting on the 3rd of May 1938. In Romania they equipped the 82nd Squadron which served on the Eastern front in 1941, executing bombing missions and even managing to down several enemy aircraft. In 1942 they were retired from the front and used for training and in 1944, the 3 remaining machines were designated for heavy transport. They were retired from service in 1946. Giving the small number of the machines that served with the Romanian Airforce (numbered from 1 to 10), the book is mainly structured, both in text and photos, to deal with each individual aircraft in order, which is handy for anyone wanting to model a particular machine. The sections of several aircraft also contain reports by crewmembers describing bombing missions and the downing of enemy fighters. The final chapter (a page worth of text) is a recollection made by a 18th Squadron (IAR-37) observer describing, from the ground of the airfield the two squadrons shared, the first day of the war of the Bloch M.B. 210. There are 62 black and white photos of aircraft and crew and 37 colour photos of various documents and newspaper articles of the time describing anything from missions to accidents. Unfortunately for non-Romanian readers, the actual text of these documents is not translated into English. Instead, each photo is accompanied by a brief description of its content. As far as the photos of the aircraft are concerned there are interesting things to note here, such as the use of the MG 15 machinegun instead of the 7.5mm MAC machinegun that was standard on the French machines and the two colours upperside camouflage (exactly which colours is a matter of debate between Romanian modellers). There are no colour photos of the aircraft, nor any profiles like there are in the Messerschmitt Bf 109E volume. All in all, this is a very useful book for aviation history enthusiasts and modellers alike. Here are a few more shots to get a better idea of what is included:
  2. Bloch MB.152C.1 (72028) 1:72 Dora Wings via Albion Alloys The MB.152 stemmed from the MB.150 deign which lost out to the MS/406 in a 1934 competition to find a new fighter for the French Air Force. The MB.150 showed promise and that is why development was taken further. A new wing was designed and a more powerful engine was fitted. By the time WWII broke out about 120 were delivered, however they were not considered combat ready at the time. Problems with the tails had lead to them being stored pending modification. Despite these problems some aircraft were modified though they still demonstrated unfavourable flight characteristics. Although outmatched by Luftwaffe aircraft the MB.152 accounted for 188 aircraft for the loss of 86. The aircraft would subsequently be used be the Vichy Forces before being passed to the Romanian Air Force by the Germans. The only other Air Combat these would see was of the 9 sent to Greece (out of an order of 25). All of these would end up being destroyed though they did account for some German and Italian Aircraft in the defence of Greece. The Kit This is a new kit from Dora Wings and follows on from there MB.151C.1, The kit arrives on 4 plastic sprues, a clear sprue, a sheet of PE, canopy masks (not shown), and a sheet of decals. Panel lines are fine and engraved with some interior detail moulded into the fuselage. Construction begins as you would expect in the cockpit. The four part seat is built up and added to the cockpit floor, PE belts being provided also for the seat. The flight controls are then added. The two part instrument panel gets its gunsight and then this can be placed on the front art of the cockpit floor, Inside the main fuselage halves additional detail is then added to the cockpit sidewalls Once done the cockpit can be placed inside and everything closed up. Net we move to the main wing. This is a single part lower with left / right uppers. The main wheel well is built up inside the lower wing then the uppers can be added. Canon barrels are added and then the wing is mated to the fuselage. We then turn our attention to the engine. Two banks of cylinders attach to the rear part with the hub going on the front. The four part cowling then goes on. At the front the propeller is assembled and added. This can then be joined to the fuselage. Scrap diagrams show the correct mounting angle for this as its not straight. Next up the main landing gear is built up and added along with the main radiator and the tailplanes. To finish up the prop is added along with the struts for the tailplanes, pitot tubes, nav lights, main aerial anf finally the canopy. Only a closed canopy option is provided. Markings The decals are from Decograf, they look good with no issues, there are four decal options provided; MB.152 No.528, 1 Esc GC 1/8, Claye-Souilly June 1940 MB.152 No.236, 2 Esc GC 1/8, Velaine-en-Hayne, April 1940. MB.152 No.622, 3 Esc GC 11/6 Chateauroux-Cere June 1940 MB.152 No,672 GC 11/9 Aulnat 1942 (Vichy Markings on the nose and tail) Conclusion This is certainly a kit modellers of French Aircraft will welcome. Highly recommended. Available in the UK in most good model shops. Review sample courtesy of

  11. Here is my first entry for the GB: the Heller-Humbrol Museum Series Bloch 210. The MB.210 was the improved and modernised replacement for the MB.200 (an aircraft almost spectacular in its ugliness) and together with the Amiot 143 (just plain monkey-butt-ugly) it shared the honours of being the first bomber to open French hostilities against the Germans in World War II. The kit is the Museum Series release of 1986 but the original tooling dates back to 1967 - however in common with some of the Heller releases of the time it is nicely detailed and moulded, and aside from some prominent injection towers in places the parts look to have stood up to the passing years pretty well: There is only one decal option (which I think was standard for Heller Museum Series issues) for MB.210 No.76 'White 3' of the 12 Bombardment Squadron from 1940 - the decals include a large and pretty cool winged Aztec (or Egyptian?) snake for each side of the fuselage which I believe is the squadron badge. So with a week to go, you can pass your time here looking at the pictures, or feel free to ask any questions you might have about this aeroplane, French aviation of the 30's and 40's, how ugly this aircraft is, how unpleasant the flight characteristics might have been, whether you remember Plastic Bertrand or not; anything really. I don't promise an answer, much less a sensible answer, but we all like to feel someone cares, so I will try to pretend I do Cheers, Stew
