  1. P-38F/G Update Sets (BIG49239 & 648521 for Tamiya) 1:48 Eduard Tamiya’s new P-38F/G Lightning is a pretty nice kit, and along comes Eduard to make it better. The BIG ED set is an aggregation of three sets in a large card envelope with the branding all over it, while the bronze legs are in a flat resealable pack like their Photo-Etch (PE) sets. P-38F Big Ed Set (BIG49239) This set contains the upgrade set, the seatbelts and a set of masks, as follows: P-38F Upgrade Set (491041) Two frets are included, one nickel plated and pre-painted, the other in bare brass. A complete set of new layered instrument panels, throttle-quadrants and side consoles are the primary parts on the painted set, with new rudder pedals; gear bay extras; double-layer circular mesh intakes under the nose and in the boom intakes; oleo-scissor links, and a perforated bracket to hold the internal windscreen armour that will require you to remove the moulded-in clear one. Seatbelts STEEL (FE1043) In case you don't already know, these belts are Photo-Etch (PE) steel, and because of their strength they can be etched from thinner material, which improves realism and flexibility in one sitting. Coupled with the new painting method that adds perceived extra depth to the buckles and other furniture by shading, they are more realistic looking and will drape better than regular brass PE. You get a full set of four-point crew belts with separate comfort pads under the buckles and a clasp that glues in place on the buckle. Masks (EX666) Supplied on a sheet of yellow kabuki tape and definitely not possessed by the devil, these pre-cut masks supply you with a full set of masks for the canopy, with compound curved handled by using frame hugging masks, while the highly curved gaps are in-filled with either liquid mask or offcuts from the background tape. In addition you get a set of hub/tyre masks for the wheels, allowing you to cut the demarcation perfectly with little effort. There’s also a set for the G if you’re going to build that option. P-38F P-38G P-38F/G Undercarriage Legs BRONZE (648521) This set contains three bronze cast gear legs that are a direct replacement for the kit parts, plus a small piece of resin that replicates the detail at the front of the nose gear leg made separately for detail and casting reasons. The legs will need a little clean-up as expected, but they have brake lines moulded into the main legs that hides a lot of it. They’ll be a lot stronger than the styrene parts, especially useful if you’re loading it up with extras. Review sample courtesy of
  2. B-2 Spirit BigEd Updates (BIG72136) 1:72 Eduard In case you're unaware, Eduard's Big ED sets are a great way to purchase all the sets you want for your model whilst availing yourself of a bulk purchase discount that can be quite tempting. The set arrives in a large cardboard envelope with the Big ED branding and a sticker in the top left that details what's inside. Within the envelope the sets are all still individually packaged to protect the frets from shuffling past each other and getting damaged until you're ready to use them. This time it's the new B-2 Spirit from ModelCollect (reviewed here) that receives their attention with five sets that add some impressive detail. Bomb Bay (72663) This large (A5) bare brass set contains a complete set of details for the main bomb bay, requiring all the raised details to be removed beforehand apart from the central spine, which is still skinned with new PE parts. The front and rear bulkheads are decked out with new skins and detail parts, the sidewalls have all new parts too, and the ribs along the roof of the bay are replaced by two-part PE ribs that have a T-shaped profile and curve to fit the shape of the bay. The front of the bay has spoilers added to disrupt the airflow enough to allow the bombs to drop out, and down the centre of the bay a set of stanchions along the spine of the bay holds the attachment beam for the centre bay doors, which gives the outward impression that it has two bays side by side. The kit's Multiple Ejector Racks that carry the bombs will need a small amount trimming from each end to cater for the two layers of PE on the bulkheads, with a scrap diagram showing where they should mount. Finally, a sheet of paper is included that has templates for the bomb bay doors printed in case you would like to make your own doors from thinner styrene for added realism. Either that, or you could opt for the Bay Doors set below. You will need some 0.3mm and 0.4mm wires, plus some lengths of 0.6mm styrene to complete this set, so check your stores before commencing work. Undercarriage (72664) This set completely replaces all the detail within the three gear bays, as well as the bay doors themselves. To maintain the strength of the assemblies however, the new PE skins are fitted within the existing kit bays, which must first have all their raised detail removed. More raised parts are added to the new skins for a more realistic look, with hinges and their pivot-points added to the bay sides. These are then attached to the new gear bay covers, which are laminated up and have extra parts attached to their inner skins, then linked to their hinge-points with styrene rod actuators from your own stock of 0.6mm rod. Bomb Bay Doors (72665) If you choose not to make your own doors from styrene, this set may be for you, as it completely replaces the kit bomb bay doors, and also adds all of the delicate framework that is simplified on the kit. The set is bare brass of A5(ish) size, and each door begins as a piece of flat PE that is laminated to a framework, onto which the new ribs fit, which are then attached to the actuator arms that are included in this set. You will need some 0.3mm wire to complete the job, so ensure you have some on hand. Interior (73624) Two frets are included, one nickel plated and pre-painted, the other in bare brass. A complete set of new layered instrument panels and side consoles that surround the pilots are the primary parts on the painted set, with new controls; ejection seat details and seatbelts; a complete new crew access tunnel and ladder is fabricated, and a pair of new intake lips are also supplied, which I guess are near the cockpit. Masks (CX504) Supplied on a sheet of yellow kabuki tape, these pre-cut masks supply you with a full set of masks for the canopy, with compound curved handled by using frame hugging masks, while the highly curved gaps are in-filled with either liquid mask or offcuts from the background tape. In addition you get a set of hub/tyre masks for all the wheels, allowing you to cut the demarcation perfectly with little effort. Review sample courtesy of
  3. Sea Fury FB.11 (BIG49193 for Airfix) 1:48 Eduard BigEd In case you're unaware, Eduard's Big ED sets are a great way to purchase all the sets you want for your model whilst availing yourself of a bulk purchase discount that can be quite tempting. The set arrives in a large cardboard envelope with the Big ED branding and a sticker in the top left that details what's inside. Within the envelope the sets are all still individually packaged to protect the frets from shuffling past each other and getting damaged until you're ready to use them. You get five sets with this one, as follows: landing flaps (48944) Eduard landing flaps use an ingenious technique to achieve excellent true-to-scale flaps using few parts, and requiring the modeller to simply remove the retracted flaps from the lower wing, plus scrape the upper wings to accommodate the thickness of the completed bays. Each half of the three flap sections (bay and flap itself) is constructed in the same manner, by twisting and folding over the attached ribs to create a 3D shape, with extra parts added along the way. The bays glue to the inside of the upper wing and the flap attaches to the rear wall of the new bay. Repeat this for the other side, and you're almost done. The bays have a "dimpled" panel in the small central section, and after pressing the details through with the tip of a ball-point pen, these are inserted in the same manner as the inner and outer sections. Exterior (48946) This larger set of two bare brass frets contains some important upgrades, such as a complete new main gear bay that will require a degree of thinning of the lower wing to accommodate it; tail wheel bay skin; crew steps; radiator intake at the root of the wings; wing-fold skins with accompanying details; new laminated gear bay covers; brake discs and hoses; rocket ignition wiring; bomb fuse spinners and more in-scale fins for those bombs. Interior (49878) Two frets are included, one nickel plated and pre-painted, the other in bare brass. A complete set of new layered instrument panels, gun-sight, side console and sidewall details are the primary parts on the painted set, with new floor skin; replacement head armour details; canopy internal structure, track and rear seal are also supplied. Masks (EX573) Supplied on a sheet of yellow kabuki tape, these pre-cut masks supply you with a full set of masks for the canopy, with compound curved handled by using frame hugging masks, while the highly curved gaps are in-filled with either liquid mask or offcuts from the background tape. In addition you get a set of hub/tyre masks for all the wheels, allowing you to cut the demarcation perfectly with little effort. Seatbelts STEEL (FE879) In case you don't already know, these belts are Photo-Etch (PE) steel, and because of their strength they can be etched from thinner material, which improves realism and flexibility in one sitting. Coupled with the new painting method that adds perceived extra depth to the buckles and other furniture by shading, they are more realistic looking and will drape better than regular brass PE. 4. Tornado F.3 ADV (BIG49191 for Revell) 1:48 Eduard BigEd In case you're unaware, Eduard's Big ED sets are a great way to purchase all the sets you want for your model whilst availing yourself of a bulk purchase discount that can be quite tempting. The set arrives in a large cardboard envelope with the Big ED branding and a sticker in the top left that details what's inside. Within the envelope the sets are all still individually packaged to protect the frets from shuffling past each other and getting damaged until you're ready to use them. You get five sets with this one, as follows: Exterior (48943) This larger bare brass set contains some important upgrades, such as delicate new afterburner rings; wing-seal details; reversing bucket ribs and mechanism details; spoiler and spoiler bay parts; aileron bay details; air-brake interior skins for bay and brakes; fuel tank fillers; a new set of vortex generators for the tail with an attachment template and a number of grilles for vents etc. Interior (49880) Two frets are included, one nickel plated and pre-painted, the other in bare brass. A complete set of new layered instrument panels and side consoles are the primary parts on the painted set, with new rudder pedals; ejection seat details; coaming instrumentation; sills; rear-view mirrors, and canopy internal structure also supplied. Undercarriage (49881) Consisting of two frets, one of which is nickel-plated and painted, the other in bare brass, this set comprehensively details the gear bays, which are quite cavernous and boxy. The painted fret contains equipment boxes, while the bare fret is structural in nature. The main bay is skinned with details for the most part, with strips for in between each rib; boxes that fold up to add missing detail; gear leg parts including data placards and brake hoses. The nose gear bay is similarly bedecked, and the gear leg gets the same treatment, improving realism immensely. Masks (EX574) Supplied on a sheet of yellow kabuki tape, these pre-cut masks supply you with a full set of masks for the canopy, with compound curved handled by using frame hugging masks, while the highly curved gaps are in-filled with either liquid mask or offcuts from the background tape. In addition you get a set of hub masks for all the wheels, allowing you to cut the demarcation perfectly with little effort. Seatbelts STEEL (FE881) In case you don't already know, these belts are Photo-Etch (PE) steel, and because of their strength they can be etched from thinner material, which improves realism and flexibility in one sitting. Coupled with the new painting method that adds perceived extra depth to the buckles and other furniture by shading, they are more realistic looking and will drape better than regular brass PE. As well as the two sets of crew belts, you also get a set of leg-restraints and the pull-handles between the pilot's knees that gets him out of there in case of an emergency. 5. USS Iwo Jima LHD 7 Eduard 1:350 Big Ed Sets Eduard previously released these six sets individually for Revells USS Iwo Jima LHD-7 and now have packaged up into two Big Ed sets. The complete offering will go a long way to superdetailing your museum class model of this great looking ship. Set 1 includes:- Flags (53180) - The four flags are beautifully painted and will look great on either an ensign staff or in the battle ensign position. To use, just cut the chosen flag from the sheet and wrap it around your favourite rigging material. Onto this there are new fixtures and fittings, such as watertight doors, which can be posed open or closed, upper steering position, complete with ships wheel, 50cal heavy machine gun and splinter shield, storage boxes, air intakes, vertical ladders and railings. The port side of the LCU is also replaced with PE and fitted with vents, liferings, intakes, which can also be posed open or shut, drainage ports, cleats, and railings. Deck crash crane, (Jumbo) – gets new ladders, driver cab, pullies, platforms, cable guide wheels, hook and cross beams. Each of the towing and crash trucks receive new steering wheels, front and rear end panels, with some getting coiled hoses and generator sets. Big Ed set 2 includes the following:- Part 3 (53184) – Apart from all the vertical, and inclined ladders, watertight doors and railings, which are all replaced with PE, this single sheet set also contains new observer positions at flight deck level, new platforms, FLYCO, windows, cable reels, netting, funnel vents and grilles. There are also a load of new sensors, replacement radars, such as the AN/SPN-43 air search radar, AN/SPS-48E E/F band 3D air search radar, and AN/SPN-43 air search radar. The Sea Sparrow launcher receives extra details, while there are also additional deck houses, platform supports, and crane details Part 4 (53185) – This two sheet set contains a full ships compliment of main railings and safety netting, as well as parts to detail more of the external parts of the ship. Several areas need to be removed before the etched parts can be added, namely the watertight doors, vertical ladders, cable reels, and several sections of various platforms. The largest replacement part in this set is for the complete stern ramp, consisting of inner and outer panels between which is sandwiched a latticework of horizontal and vertical beams. There are also replacement and new covered platforms and fittings to be added, the most obvious being that just aft of the starboard lift. The Sea Sparrow launchers also get some additional detail parts, as do the bomb dump chutes. Part 5 (53186) – This single sheet set provides the modeller with much needed detail for the ships boats, such as new rudder, skeg, propeller, although the modeller will need to provide a length of 0.3mm wire/rod for the shaft. There are also new cleats, lifting eyes, bow mounted bollard, windscreen, wheel, exhaust covers and an unidentifiable plate for the rear cockpit. The RIB is also given the Eduard treatment with the addition of a new engine cover, wheel, transom and drive unit. The rest of the sheet is filled with the numerous life raft canister racks. Each rack, from single to septuple is made up from a rear mounted upright and separate rack units. Once assembled and glued to the model the kits canisters can be glued direct to the racks. Conclusion If you absolutely need to have all the etched parts for the Revell Iwo Jima then this is the way to go as it does come out slightly cheaper than buying them individually. They will certainly go towards making a great model into a stunning one. You will definitely need a good set of optivisors and very good set of tweezers, not to mention patience and a steady hand.
