  1. This thread has been moved from the Aircraft WiP forum because, well, I hadn't got very far with it! Many thanks to @Enzo the Magnificent for moving it! I've just received the new Special Hobby 1/72nd scale kit of the Mirage IIICJ, what a delightful little kit it is too! The surface detail is very fine, SH have really upped their game with this one. I've waited for this kit for a long time, I know the Modelsvit kit is out there but I find the divots used to represent rivets a distraction, rivets never leave a hole like that and the Mirage III is mostly flush rivetted. The kit comes with plenty of armament options that would cover most users IIIC's and I have plenty of decals to cover Armée de l'Air aircraft so my subject will be an Adl'A jet. This will be a very slow build, I've already committed myself to the Meteor STGB and I'll be building this kit in parallel. The biggest decision I've got to make with this kit is whether to go for an NMF jet or one in the Blue scheme. Pictures to follow.
  2. Next french at war project, using the great Tamiya P-47M kit with Berna Decals. DSC_0006 by grimreaper110, auf Flickr cockpit tub ready for assembly DSC_0008 by grimreaper110, auf Flickr DSC_0009 by grimreaper110, auf Flickr
  3. #12/2022 So, this is my dad´s final contribution to the French at war theme. Tamiya P-47M kit, drop tank from a Tamiya P-47 Razorback kit, BLU-27 napalm canisters from a Hasegawa weapon set, antenna wire with elastic thread, Eduard seatbelts. All the Algerian War F-47 were equipped with two rocket rails between landing gear and bomb rack, used some from the spares box. Painted with AK Xtreme Metal Aluminium. Initially we wanted to do an Algerian War scheme with the Berna Decals P-47 post WW2 sheet. The scheme included is the early one with small cowl letters and the unit coat of arms on the fuselage side. Then I found out, that the fuselage codes from the Berna Decals Skyraider sheet match exactly the size for the later Thunderbolt scheme with big cowl letters and number, the tailnumber was puzzled together. Build thread here https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235108727-guerre-dalgérie148-republic-f-47d-thunderbolt-armée-de-l’air/ Model shows an aircraft of EC 2/20 "Ouarsenis" which flew the F-47 in combat from 1957 to 1960, then the Thunderbolts were replaced with Skyraiders. 4. #11/2022 So, my dad´s French at war theme is almost at the end now, this is the second last model.....for now. The new Airfix kit is neither really good nor really bad. The detail in some areas is nice, so are the open flaps options. A major issue is the fit problem of upper and lower fuselage half. Had to do sand and cut away some pieces of the bulkhead behind the seat and the cockpit side instruments to join the halves together. Don´t know if my dad did something wrong but the gunsight was too large, so he used one from the sparesbox. The model is a tailsitter. The instructions call for 17g noseweight, my dad added about 30g to be on the safe side. Sadly there´s hardly any space to add weight, used airgun ammo and filled the nose, foot space and the forward areas of the wing tanks. Painted with older selfmixed green and blue-grey paints, Berna Decals used. Build thread here https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235108250-guerre-dalgérie148-de-havilland-vampire-mk5-armée-de-l’air/ In the early fifties, France received a bunch of completed and also still to build up Vampires, used by the Airforce and the Navy. Soon France developed a more powerful license version, the Mk.53, also called Mistral. Best to distinguish by diffently shaped air intakes. During the Algerian War, mostly Mistrals saw combat, but also some original Vampires were used. The Model shows one of these from EC 1/7 "Provence", stationed in Bizerte/Tunisia in 1956. 6. #10/2022 And already the next finished French one by my dad. Tamiya A-1H converted to an AD-4, early inner wing racks and tanks taken from an old Esci Skyraider kit, Berna decals, painted with AK Xtreme Metal White Aluminium. 10. #5/2022 My dad finished the next French in the line. Hobby Boss kit with Berna Decals, the nose and fuselage side numbers are a bit oversized, the missing tail "1" was taken from a French Corsair sheet. The roundels come in three pieces with extra blue dot and anchor. My dad only applied them on the fuselage, for the wings he used one piece decals from the MDC Corsair sheet. On the spine, the kit has two lights, as far as seen on pics, the -5 had only one, so my dad removed the other. Eduard seatbelts, EZ Line for the antenna wires, plastic rods for the whip antennas. Used a Hobby Boss Bearcat tank for the late style Hellcat tank, used lead wire for the fuel line and plastic stripes for the two bands. The bomb racks looked wrong, so my dad took some Eduard pieces from the sparesbox. Also the rocket racks with rails are from the sparesbox (think their are from a P-51). The kit doesn´t include gun barrels, used some plastic rods for them. Painted with a mix of Gunze H54 Navy Blue and a touch of normal blue. Build thread here https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235102785-guerre-dindochine148-grumman-f6f-5-hellcat-aviation-navale/ Besides Uruquay, France was also a post WW2 user of the Hellcat. The plane served in the airforce and in the navy. Whereas the airforce replaced their Hellcats with Bearcats in 1952, the navy kept them until 1955. Model shows one of the French Aeronavale aircrafts that served with Flotille 1F (later 11F) during the Indochina War. My latest completion the Heller SA316 Alouette III Gendarmerie boxing finished as a Marine Nationale SA319B using some of the Brengun etched brass set and the Berna Decals Sheet BD 72-94 and a bit of scratch on the engine and for various aerials and other lumps and bumps, would have been finished a couple of months ago but when I removed the masking from the cockpit I found that I had manged to stick a bit on the inside so the all the glazing had to be removed which saw it on the shelf of doom for a while before I could get up the enthusiasm to rectify. anyway here it is. 13. After much internal debate I've decided to go with building a classic French jet that was used by the Armée de l'Air (AdlA), from the fifties through to the seventies. The sixties coincided with the French yé-yé musical movement which I'm a big fan of so each instalment of this thread will include some music from that era... For the kit I'm using the excellent Special Hobby kit in its initial Azur/FRROM boxing, the only difference between the early and late version of this kit is the decals, early = NMF, late = camouflage although it should be noted that NMF jets were still present very late into the aircraft's service. Here's the kit: Here's the main reference (although I have got some other magazine articles), the EM37 book is excellent covering the career of the type in French, Israeli and Honduran service, there are lots of photos, a technical section, unit histories, aircraft histories and where possible, a photo of every aircraft built with only a few exceptions. The text is French but a good on line translator will help. The book is quite expensive and the ordering process isn't simple but if you really want a comprehensive one-stop shop on the type (which I did), then this is the book for you. I've also got some Berna Decal and Modeldecal sheets on the type but the truth of the matter is, I haven't decided on the unit markings yet. The kit decals are quite good but I might use them with some of the aftermarket ones to mix things up a bit.
  14. This is a placeholder for the first of my two builds. I'll be using the excellent Academy 1/72nd scale kit with the Berna Decals for the EALA3/1 option. I've got the LF resin bits and bobs to arm the beastie with but I'm in two minds about using them. Kit and gubbins References The eagle eyed amongst you will have spotted there's two kits in that box, well I haven't settled on my 2nd subject yet (and to be fair, I'm hoping Special Hobby get a wriggle on and release their Harvard kits).
  15. #9/2021 And my dad´s next model is finished. Wanted to avoid one of the usual blue schemes so we chose a French one in an atlantic scheme. Revell USA kit with Berna decals. Painted with Tamiya XF-2 White and Gunze H317 FS36231. Build thread here https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235088144-aeronautique-navale148-lockheed-pv-1-ventura-french-navy/ (Free)France operated the PV-1 and also the PV-2 from 1944 to 1961. 17. Here is my other Eduard 1:144 Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21Bis "Fishbed N" which I built back in 2012. It represents "Blue 223", of the People's Air Force of Mozambique, at Beira AB, Mozambique, in 1988. The kit was built OOB and painted with brush except for the final light coat of matt varnish which was airbrushed. The decals came from a Berna Decals sheet. The rocket pods came from an Attack 1:144 MiG-21 kit. I had arranged the pylons so that they would be carried on the inner ones but the undercarriage fouled the fit of the pods so I put them on the outer ones. It seems this machine was used for attacks on FRELIMO guerilla forces. I did some weathering but it isn't noticeable in the photos! Thanks for looking Miguel
  18. Hello! Here are a pair of Attack 1:144 Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17Fs ("Fresco C") which I built back in 2014 using a Berna Decals sheet (MiG-17 African Air Forces Pt.1) to represent a couple of rarely seen African countries. I built both kits mostly OOB, without adding any cockpit. I only thinned the guns, added the wing probes from metal wire and added the sway braces for the underwing drop tanks. I also added the radio mast. Both were fully painted and varnished by brush. First up: "Red 43" of the Guinea-Bissau Air Force seen at Bissau IAP in 1991. The second one: BF8401, Burkina Faso Army Aviation, in 1991. As always, thanks for looking and all comments are welcome. Miguel
  19. Before de Gaulle withdrew France from NATO's integrated military command structure in June 1966, France had committed assets to bases in Germany such as Lahr, just over the French-German border and in the early 1960's this included F-100's of EC.2/3 "Champagne". I'm hoping to replicate one of these aircraft using a combination of the ESCI 1/72nd F-100D from many moons ago and finally extracted from the stash, Berna decals will provide the markings and in a bit of prior planning, I've got the Aires resin cockpit, wheels and jet-pipe (the kit original being very shallow and superficial). Here's the goodies with a couple of book references, fortunately the F-100 is well served with on-line references too. The observant among you will see there are two kits in the box, one of them has had one set of wings hacked about to drop the slats as commonly seen on F-100's when parked up, really I should also drop the flaps to match. I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to persist with this approach, time will tell.
  20. Hi all, Here's my just finished 1/72 Academy F-84G Thunderjet. I did it as a machine from Escadron de Reconnaissance Tactique 2/33 "Savoie", based at Cognac in the mid 50's. I added a recce pod on the left wing from Model Art. This was a converted Fletcher fuel tank as used on the T-33, to give the straight wing F-84's a basic recce capability. It was first used by the French, and found its way to other NATO Thunderjet users. Decals came from a Berna sheet. Painted with Vallejo Metal Color, Revell, ModelMaster and Tamiya paints. Thanks for looking, and I hope you like it. Pete
