  1. Yesterday's Times carried a long and interesting obituary of Gail Halvorsen who has died at the age of 101. His exploits during the Berlin Airlift are the stuff of legend but I didn't realise he had been the base commander at Tempelhof in the 1970s. Apparently he was a life-long teetotaller and found the need for the base commander to host or attend innumerable alcohol-fuelled social events a bit of a challenge! After he left the military he helped set up a student exchange programme between Berlin and Utah and kept up his connections with Berlin almost to the end of his life. He told the Washington Post "Through the clouds came a little parachute with a fresh piece of chocolate. It was a symbol of hope that somebody out there realised you were under siege. I think hope is the thing, not the candy bar. It was the hope".
  2. I’ve been excited waiting for this group build since signing up in october 2017 for it - and now it’s here 😎🤗 My subject is a berlin airlift c-47 from 1948 - the one closest to camera in this shot (315672) It’s gonna be really fun and challenging trying to capture that trashy weathered used old feel Iliad provide the decals for this aircraft (third one down...) The kit is a 1:72 scale hobby boss c-47 that i found on evilbay for a great price 👍 The obligatory sprue shots: It has an interesting cockpit glass set-up and a mere whiff of PE (50% of which is steps that i wont use) I bought some aires wheels for it then i spotted the eduard weighted set (thought they looked better) and bought them.. but now I can’t decide which - guess there’s plenty of time to find out. I’ll be on holiday on the start date so i hope its ok to post this now.
  3. Sometimes I have these lapses in sanity, but having watched a fair few films on the internet about the Berlin Airlift, and always having an affection for the Avro York, I thought I would attempt Mach2's boxing of their Avro York of said era. Now, this is my first Mach2 kit and after reading a few bits and pieces about these kits on here and other forums, I knew what to expect on opening the box. I hadn't ever had a look at one of their kits before, but it was still a bit of a shock what was inside. let's have a look shall we? Flimsy lid with really nicely rendered (computer generated?) box art. Single page of instructions, not so bad as it is fairly obvious where the major parts go, colour drawings on the other side, only a single side view for each option. Decals, which had a printing fault through them, but a quick e-mail to Didier had a new set sent which were much better...... ..…. on inspecting the parts, one of the inboard engine nacelles was badly deformed, but a replacement was sent with the decals. Two large sprues of grainy, off white plastic hold the major and minor parts, and one clear sprue for the cockpit and fuselage windows. There are a lot of ejector pin marks, a bit of shrinkage and warping, and cloudiness of the clear parts. This will be pictured as we go along the build. I got hold of a copy of Warpaint series no. 98 on the York. The dimensions published in here, and elsewhere show the overall length should be just under 332.5mm and the wingspan just under 432mm in 1/72nd scale. I do look at drawings and sometimes check dimensions but am generally not that bothered about a few mm's here and there. The drawings in the book were about spot on to the dimensions, so, offering up the fuselage halves showed it is a good 7-8mm short. The depth seems good as does the width, but something has gone wrong near the front somewhere, the spacing of the windows is ok from the underwing door to the rear, the large cargo hatch is more or less in the right place compared to the underwing door. I'm not sure if I'll attempt to rectify this, we'll see during the build. I know the part is placed on the prototype drawing but the production one is the same profile. The next two photo's show the relative positions of the doors, the part wasn't moved, just the camera (I'm no expert photographer by the way!) The wings look pretty well proportioned, to the drawings anyway. The central fin is OK in shape but badly moulded. I'm sure this is where the fuselage length has gone wrong. Looks Ok when you move it forward but the rear is short. Some shots of the roughness and warpage of the fuselage halves, a lot of work to do here it seems. I just going to say that this is not a shot at Didier, who I believe is a one-man band and owner of Mach2 and I think should be applauded for attempting to release subjects not generally available. I'd be interested to hear if anyone who has a Mach2 kit can confirm this pretty much the standard for these, or are some better than others? Anyway, this may take a while to get going, I have a couple of other projects to finish first. Hints and tips, and comments much appreciated. Onwards and upwards! Davey.
  4. Hello All, About a week and we can start! My contribution is based on the Revells 1/48 C-47 Skytrain "Berlin Airlift" (box 04518). I think it will be a British green c/s but nothing is decide yet. The boxview: The sprues The clearparts And finally the decalsheet Everyone good luck and happy buildings 🙂 Arno
  5. Berlin Airlift C-47s 1:72 Iliad Designs It did not take too long after the end of WWII for things to turn sour between the former Allies of East and West. The first real test of the Cold War came in 1948 when the Soviet bloc decided to blockade the former German Capital of Berlin which despite being in the Soviet Zone of occupied Germany was administered jointly between the Soviets, The UK, France and the USA. Road, Rail & Canal access to West Berlin was closed off but not the Air Corridor. In what has been described as the biggest humanitarian airlift in history, air Crews from the US, UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia & South Africa would operate an Airlift to bring in Supplies to West Berlin. Over 200,000 flights would take place in the space of a year, at the height of the campaign, one plane landed every 45 seconds at Tempelhof Airport. 39 British & 31 American personnel, and 13 German civilians lost their lives in the Berlin Airlift. They are remembered on the Berlin Airlift monument at Tempelhof. The C-47/DC-3 was still at the time available in large numbers and as such saw a lot of service during the Berlin Airlift, this new sheet from ILIAD allows for 4 different aircraft can be built from the sheet; USAF C-47 "Fassberg Flyer". USAF C-47 S/N 315672. S/N 293708 European Air Transport Service. DC-3 from BOAC G-AGIZ . The decals look excellent, well printed, colour dense and with minimal carrier film. Conclusion These decals help commemorate an important part of Cold War history. Highly Recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  6. I have two vacform kits sitting on the Shelf of Shame till I develop enough skill to get round to finishing them. They are a 1/32 (actually, more like 1/35) BAE Hawk - manufacturer unknown - and 1/48 Sierra Scale Models Fairey Barracuda - a work in progress, coming along but very slowly. I sanded the fuselage a bit too enthusiastically and now it will need some serious rebuilding and lots of Isopon P38 (to hold together what is left of the fuselage). However at the last Scots Nats model show in Perth I saw this 1/144 Avro York, a vacform from Formaplane for about £7 so decided to have another bash at a vacform. I'd like to build one that took part in the Berlin Airlift. So... here goes: The kit was started about a week ago and this is the progress so far. The pic in the clear bag of what it should look like : The Vacform itself: Umm, the wings need a bit of work. Actually no, the wings need a lot of work. I don't think the prop spinners will be much use and the prop blades were completely U/S: An attempt at a rudimentary cockpit. I seriously doubt much (if anything) will be seen through whatever canopy I manage to scratch but hey-ho, that's why I didn't spend too much time on it. Cockpit in place, windows drilled out and "glass" made from Humbrol Clearfix then sprayed with Tamiya Smoke. Some of the components glued together and most of the very large and deep panel lines filled and sanded. Two large struts fitted into the wings and corresponding square tube guides fitted in the fuselage for support and correct alignment - I hope... Hmm, the tube alignment might work after all: Some N Guage railway fence mesh fitted in the intakes and the start of the nacelles being built up inside to take the undercarraige. The undercarraige will be entertaing as it will have to be totally scratchbuilt. So, that's it for now. Let's see how it all goes together. I have no idea how to join and paint the fuselage without destroying the windows so I might have to rip them out, paint it and install new ones. Has anyone ever tried mixing Tamiya Smoke with Clearfix and then making the windows? I see a wee experiment coming up. A thought just occured to me whilst I was writing this. I'm wondering if it might be possible to paint the fuselage sides (in silver) mask them, join the fuselage together and then try and blend in the paint??? How do you Airliner bods do it?
