No whilst it is rightly best remembered for it's service throughout WWII the Supermarine Spitfire continued in service well into the 1950's with a great many air forces including the RAF who finally retired their last operational example (a PR.XIX ) after it performed it's last flight on 10th June 1957. As I signed up for both elements of this GB and the subjects built post 1946 are getting the Lion's share of the builds I thought that I should add one from the "used in the 50's but built earlier" category and the Spitfire fits that perfectly. For my build I will be using the recent Airfix 1/48 FR Mk.XIV which I picked up in their New Year sale (I got two as it seemed rude not to ) which actually comes with markings for an eligible option in the form of TZ112 from II( AC) Sqn RAF based in Germany 1950-51, but me being me I want to do something a bit different and that comes in the form of one of approximately 130 Mk.XIV's sold to Belgium between 1947 and 49 and were used until 1954. Daco do a very nice set of decals covering various marks of Spitfire including the XIV so I have ordered a set and some Eduard seatbelts which will be the only additions I make to this kit. Speaking of the kit here is picture of the box lid and contents; I'm going to spend the rest of this week working on my Caproni in the WWII twins GB and will hopefully make a start on this (work permitting) next week so don't expect any big leaps forward too soon. Thanks for looking in and as usual all comments and criticisms are gratefully received. Craig.

Hi all, Having some time over the weekend I was looking for another quick and cheerfull kit to build. Since i build mostely models in a Belgian livery finding kits that come with Belgian decals is always a treat. I've build a few hobby boss kits before and they usually go together very well, and are nicely detailed however not always as accurate as i'd like. the Sikorsky is no exception. I'm no expert on this helicopter, and i don't want to get caught on trying to replicate every last rivet, or try to superdetail it but some things need some attention to better replicate the original. The first thing i noticed was the Belgian chopper had a different door with the window to one side rather than central as per kit unit. It makes sense to have it to the side as this way it will line up with the fixed window when the door is open. I laminated some styrene on a clear sheet so that i could get the resessed handles and the window in one go. at this point i realised some other thind didn't look quite right the surrounds on the other windows needed a more rounded edge and there was a flappy-thingy below the window. the fuel-vents (?) where nicely represented but not present on the Belgian example so they where cut away. as they where hollow i enlarged the hole until it could accept a length or sprue to act as a plug. worse still the side of the real thing was treated my a mad plumber to look like a prop from an alien movie. fortunately marking it all out and running metal wires between predrilled holes made this a fairly easy detail to add next i turned my attention to the interior since the holes for the plumbing along with the ejector pins didn't do the sidewalls any vavours i made and insert to cover what could be seen trough the open door A little test fit to boost moral (and see if the legs and the plumbing would get along later) next i masked all the windows inside and out, Painted the interior black and than misted on some grey to create some depth and added some colour to the seats and switches i also added some dials to the blank instrument panel by drilling some shallow holes. The glazing is rather thick and destorts the view so i cut away one of the sliding portions so it can be posed open later And that brings us to the end of this episode

I've put my previous builds on hold because I couldn't resist starting this. Whilst I was at Telford I bought decals from the Daco stand, and also found a SF-260 from Planet Models. These were the last parts I needed to make the remaining 2 models I needed for my Red Devils set (having already done a Fouga Magister and having done the solo Alpha Jet in it's red scheme - as seen here and here respectively). Now I've started wit hthe SF-260, knowing it's going to be hte one I hate doing the most - I just don't like doing resin kits. Lukcily it's a pretty straight forward kit. PArt of the tail section shattered, so I had to remake it out of putty. The picture makes it look a lot messier than it is - but until I've finished the build I won't be tidying it up yet. It went together really easily, and it does look really nice. However, it was a tail sitter, so I've hollowed out the part behind the engine cowling so that I can put some weight in. I don't have a drill, and it's a tiny model -so I ended up doing it entirely by hand with a knife. It was labourer but I'm glad I've got it done now. Excuse my chipped nails, but that's what I've hollowed out - pretty much to the cockpit too. It will be filled with lead ballast before I start tidying the model up and getting it ready for painting. I haven't started the Hunter yet- I'll probably start that this weekend. I'm aiming to get these done for a model show a week Sunday.

I picked up this little kit for around 4€ in a toystore. Post ww1 some german types saw service in the belgian airforce. most where stripped of their guns and used as trainers. I wanted a quick build so i build it almost straight from the box, only leaving off the guns and covering the hole with plastic card and filler, i also added a windshield. the lozenge cammo presented a problem as the kit decals only provice a black outline pattern for these and revell will have you paint each individual square by hand... seriously revell? I googled some lozenge patters and printed these to scale, after adding belginan roundles.. these where stuck to the plastic parts using a mixture of microscale kristal kleer and pva and also given a coat with this. For the commet on the fuselage, i first sprayer the area red and than put masking tape over a printed design, carefully cut out and masked it and than oversprayed with an off-white. i imagine the real plane had it's fuselage recovered with new, unpainted fabric resulting in the strange, but striking design. original decals asside, and considdering it's vintage, this is a little gemn of a kit, and given there's more interesting conor schemes for it, i'd certainly be tempted to pick another one up.
