  1. Hey all, Here's my rendition of the excellent Airfix 1/72nd Bristol Beaufighter TF.X Built OOB with added rivets to fill up the large panels. I initially planned it wheels down on an airfield. I changed plans midway to depict a moment over the Channel just after the torpedo was dropped. Unfortunately mods like a head turn on the pilot, and various pitches in the control surface and the tail wheel in landing config were too late to change as I had already built and painted the model by then. Also my resident elf 'Sloppy' decided he wanted the tail gunner's machine gun for himself. It was also an experiment with liquid resin. Modeled the ocean with Plaster of Paris, made a negative with latex rubber and then poured the resin. Messy! The splash was made with cotton and white glue (also hides the deployed tail wheel and acrylic rod holding the aircraft up) Unfortunately the torpedo and all the work with the bubbles is hardly visible in the end result. The props were made by masking and spraying the black and yellow in two separate passes on clear packaging plastic. They're pretty flimsy- I need a better solution for that. Painted with Tamiya acrylic, Alclad2 Burnt Iron on the engine cowling and weathered with oils and pastels. It's a surprisingly large aircraft with a wider wingspan than the F/A-18F or Sukhoi-30! WW2 was a crazy time in engineering ingenuity. Thank you for your interest! Cheers, Alex.
  2. Hello all, Time to get started on my first entry for this Group Build. This is one I've had in my stash for a while now: an Airfix 1/72 Beaufighter T.F.X. As the kit omits or simplifies some of the cockpit details (e.g. the very prominent heating pipe on the starboard side), I also purchased a CMK resin cockpit, and as I often do I'll also use Eduard photo-etch and paint masks. The aircraft I'm planning to build is an early T.F.X of the North Coates Strike Wing in August 1943. A quick history of the North Coates Wing in 1942 - 1943 The North Coates Strike Wing was formed in late 1942 and consisted of three squadrons - 143 Sqn with Blenheims but converting to Beaufighters, and 236 and 254 Sqns with a mix of Beaufighters Mk.Ic and VIc. The Wing's role was coastal reconnaissance and shipping strikes against convoys usually off the Netherlands. These convoys transported materials vital to the German armaments industry, such as high grade Swedish iron ore, to Rotterdam, where they would be sent up the Rhine to factories in the Ruhr. The Wing's first strike on 20 November 1942 didn't go to plan. The Wing set course for the target without its fighter escort, the two formations failing to rendezvous, and several of the Beaus detailed for anti-Flak duties lost contact with the formation in poor weather. The aircraft tried to press home an attack on a convoy off Texel but the Flak defences and escorting Fw190s of II./JG1 were waiting for them. In the confusion some Beaufighters were hampered by other friendly aircraft which got in their way and did not bomb, while three Beaufighters were shot down (including 236 Squadron's C.O., Wg Cdr Fraser) and seven badly damaged, two of which were written off on return. This was a poor return for one tug sunk and several vessels damaged. 236 Squadron's new Boss, Wg Cdr Neil Wheeler, along with Wg Cdr R. E, X. Mack of 254 Sqn (replaced by Sqn Ldr G. D. Sise when Mack was killed) and Wg Cdr W. O. V. Bennett of 143 Sqn, energetically set about devising new tactics so that the earlier debacle would not happen again, and the Wing entered a period of intense training interspersed with search and coastal reconnaissance duties. In April 1943 the hard work paid off when the Wing attacked a heavily escorted convoy off the Dutch coast. As the Beaufighters attacked the Flak ships with bombs, machine guns and cannon, the "Torbeaus" swept in at low level and aimed their torpedoes at the largest merchant vessel, the 4,906 tonne Norwegian cargo vessel Hoegh Carrier. In an attack lasting just four minutes the Hoegh Carrier and her cargo of coal was sent to the bottom, two M-class minesweepers were set on fire and an armed trawler was damaged. Only two aircraft were hit. More successes followed throughout 1943 as the Wing continued to press home their attacks with cannon, torpedoes and for the first time rockets. The Germans soon started sending some convoys by night, rendering them more vulnerable to the Royal Navy's Nore Flotilla and to mines dropped by Bomber Command. The combined result forced the Germans route many more convoys to Emden not Rotterdam. This was a far less efficient journey to factories in the Ruhr due to canal locks and limitations of barge sizes on the Dortmund-Ems Canal, as opposed to the Rhine from Rotterdam where larger barges could move freely up the river. The first shipping strike using new Beaufighter T.F.Xs occurred on 2nd August 1943, and in a "copybook" attack the Wing's 24 aircraft targeted escort vessels with rockets before the Torbeaus struck the merchant vessel Fortuna, which reportedly sank in only 30 seconds along with her cargo of iron ore. It's an aircraft from this last raid I'm planning to build, and as an early T.F.X will be in the (very attractive in my opinion) Temperate Sea Scheme - not that I dislike the later scheme! Enough of my ramblings for now, I'll be back soon with more on the exact subject of this build and some progress! 3. Here's my entry, PK-103, the Beaufighter Mk X torpedo bomber. This will be my second attempt at building this. Hopefully this time a young relative will not come to my house and sweep half of the parts from the kitchen table to end up under the cooker, never to be seen again! These kits remind me so much of Summer holidays. For years we went to the same caravan site in Great Yarmouth, and the camp shop had stacks of Matchbox kits among the toilet rolls and teabags. I'd build the 2 colour planes and tanks with diorama bases, but they'd always get broken during the trip home. This poor thing has sat unbuilt for over 40 years. It will finally get to achieve its purpose. I just hope that I don't get glue on the windows.
  4. This is my thread for my build of PK-103 Bristol Beaufighter. This is a Place Holder atm, as I am still a few weeks from returning home from deployment and being in a position to start my build.
  5. Hi. My first completed model for a very, very long time and the first ever posted on line. I know its not perfect but I'm just grateful I had the patience to complete it and it didn't end up in the bin! Decided not to add the D-Day stripes to keep it simple. No idea if the aircraft ever actually existed in this form but I'm happy with it, I learnt a lot and that's all that counts. Just the aerial to add when my elastic thread arrives. Good kit with no real vices. Paints are Hataka, Vallejo and Tamiya acrylics. Weathering - maybe a bit too much - was mainly pastel powders. Chipping (Vallejo steel and smoke) added using tweezers and a tiny piece of natural sponge. Peewit masks okay but not as good as Eduard IMHO. Winsor & Newton gloss and matt varnishes. Thanks for looking.
  6. I offer another model for 'Ready For Inspection ! This was my first Tamiya kit and the first kit I used an airbrush on as well! I was chuffed with the initial finish so kind of bottled out of weathering it initially. It's sat on naughty shelf for a fair few weeks until last night. I decided I must bite the proverbial bullet and go for broke. Decals applied and a little more weathering applied. As A few people have remarked in forums recently.. Less is More.. ive been very pleased by and grateful for all the likes and positive comments this project has received. I feel I am making good progress and learning my craft more and more. thanks to everyone! Do people think the wing gun port coverings work or not? Critique is very much welcomed! Tamiya Dark Ocean Grey over Vallejo grey Primer. It's missing 1 out of the 4 rocket launchers.. The ' Carpet Monster' took one so i've had to leave only 3 installed.. until i can find the missing rocket! Decals settled with Humbrol Decalfix - seems to work for me! Notice i have not filled in the wing gun outlets but i have done what i have read was often applied. i.e. The gun ports were covered with canvas and then doped. I did this like a Hurricane or Spitfire would have been done.. in Red canvas. This was to prevent the guns freezing up at altitude for the pure bred fighters but in the Beaufighter case was just to cover the ports up as the fuselage mounted cannon was only used and the wing guns were removed to save weight. - This was modelled using some Tamiya 6mm masking tape and then coloured using a red Sharpie pen. I think it looks pretty authentic? (I did try filling in the ports with Squadron White putty but i couldn't get a nice enough finish and found the canvas /dope solution by chance in an article) Love this shot from the rear quarter !
  7. Fairly standard offering - bit of resin here and there, OOB markings, very enjoyable build. Mojo up and running now. Factory fresh too, a first for me
  8. The kit was built last year and painted whit Vallejo acrylic colors.
  9. Hello all; It's been a while, but I ask you to consider the offering below for feedback and critique. As usual, the full build up description and (shameless plug notwithstanding) description of its history and context can be found on my site, Making-History.ca Onwards to the pics... Thanks for looking! Cheers; Mark.
  10. Here is the latest Revell Bristol Beaufighter TF.X. I built this kit for a review in the Dutch IPMS magazine. It was built straight out of the box, except for the Eduard seatbelts. Actually, it is a pretty good kit. Only some minor fitting issues, a very fragile landing gear and the instructions leave you with some guess work. Hope you like.
