Evening all, Having shared more than a few photographs on here over the past few months, I thought it was about time I shared a model! I've spent the last few weeks quietly working away on the new Airfix Defiant for my Battle of Britain project, finally adding the finishing to it this morning. A lovely little kit with no vices at all, the only additions being some Eduard seat belts and decals from the Xtradecal 2010 Battle of Britain anniversary sheet, which I found to be a little disappointing in their application; not particularly receptive to Microsol and prone to cracking rather than conforming, particularly along the fin leading edge. I also utilised Peewit's mask set for the heavily framed canopy and turret as life's just too short! Weathering was kept fairly light, with the cowling chipping applied in accordance to the Xtradecal's recommendations. A new technique to me, I applied some liquid mask with a sponge to the cowlings and walkway over Alclad aluminium prior to painting, and was pretty pleased with the effect after removal, despite the need for a little touching up by hand. All in all, an enjoyable, simple build to ease me back into the swing of things now the airshow season is done and dusted. Thanks for looking, comments welcomed as ever, Cheers, Shaun

Hello gents Next I will be building three of the old but worthy Fujimi Ju87B: Two are the "Immelman" boxing and one the "Shark Mouth" though I won't be building either of the schemes shown on the box art as they fall outside of the time-frame for the BoB GB. Although they are different boxings they contain the same parts so I will just show the contents from one of them. The instructions: ... and the sprue shots: The clear parts: ... and a few extras: Quickboost B-2 style exhausts and Eduard canopy masks... ... Eduard Superfabric seat harness sets: ... and just in case I need them, the early style metal propeller (these are from a set intended for the early Ju88A-4 but the props and spinners are the same for the Ju87B-1): I'm not sure what markings I will be using yet but one will be this famous aircraft from StG.2 (from the Kagero Battle of Britain Vol.1 book/transfer set) which was shot down and landed in fairly complete condition near Selsey in Sussex on 16 August 1940 and was subsequently much photographed: plus one from StG.1 (with the Hans Huckebein diving raven badge) and one from StG.77 if I can cobble together the necessary combination of codes and staffel badge... this set and this: should help with that as the markings for a BoB Stuka should be the same but without the yellow theatre markings... At present all the sprues have been washed and are air-drying (trans: I am about to have an afternooon nap so can't be bothered to dry them myself) so I hope to start on them this evening. Hi, i will be entering my build of the Airfix 1/48 Ready For Battle gift set. i have had my eye on getting this kit for some time, and when i found out about this group build i thought it enough justification to build this kit/set (i was going to build the Eduard 1/48 Spitfire Mk IXc, which will just have to wait). annoyingly i will have to hand paint it as my airbrush is broken at the moment, but will try my best. Hello Guys, This will be my first entry into the "Battle of Britain 75th Anniversary Group Build" - the Revell 1/32 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IIa. I plan to accompany this Spitfire with the Eduard 1/32 Messerschmitt BF109E-3. Introduction to the kit: The Box Art: The Box Contents The Box Contains 3 clear bags of light grey sprues; 5 in one bag, and 4 in each of the two other bags making a total of 13 light grey sprues. There is another small clear bag containing 3 small clear sprues. There is a 12 page black and white assembly/painting and decaling instruction booklet that includes two options of paint scheme and squadron markings, and lastly, a sheet of cartograf decals; Sprues A + B: Sprues C + D + D- NO, that's not a mistake, but it is one by Revell of Germany!! I have two sprue D's which are the portside upper wing sections and no Sprue E which is the starboard side upper wing section! Aaaarrrrrggggghhhh!!! I went to Revell's website to order the missing sprue E and it can take up to 8 weeks to be delivered from Germany!!!!!????!!!! Bloody hell!! Sprue F Sprue G Sprue Q Sprue T Sprue S (x2) Sprue H (x2) Clear Sprues I, R + U A 12 page black and white Assembly/Painting and Decaling Instruction Booklet Front Page 1 and Back Page 12 Pages 2 + 3 Pages 4 + 5 Page 6 + 7 Pages 8 + 9 Pages 10 + 11 The Decal Sheet The molded parts are very crisp and clean with zero flash apart from a couple of little areas. The parts have nice fine recessed panel lines and lots of rivet details. The clear molded parts are very clear with zero aberrations except for one side of the sliding canopy which is slightly "glazed". The decals are excellent looking with zero carrier film beyond the decal edges and good register. The black and white instruction booklet appears to be clear and concise, but the two paint and decal options would be better in color. The color call outs are in Revell colors only. I will make a final report when the build is complete indicating any issues that I come across. In the meantime, thanks for taking a look and I hope you enjoy following along with my build. My entry for the GB will be the Revell 1:32 Spitfire IIa, dressed in the colours of 19 Sqn in October 1940. Specifically this will be the aircraft QV-Y, P7423 flown by S/Lt Arthur Blake at that time, who was sadly shot down by 109s later in the month. My aim is to add some propblurs and show the aircraft in take off mode. This will need a pilot figure needless to say. Initial photos will be added later... I'll be nice to make something that isn't Science Fiction for a change!!! Wonder if I can remember how to do that...

Hi all, Is it really five years since we last did this? Wow! Hopefully there will be time and energy for at least a couple of builds, but this one was my birthday present back in February that was bought by my wife specifically for this GB. We live quite near the southernmost areas of the Battle, and the Solent is quite a key part of family life, so when Airfix came out with its recent Dogfight Double of the new tool Spit Mk.Ia and Bf109e in the markings of the ill-fated combatants John Dundas and Helmut Wick, it seemed like the right thing to get it. Of course the fatal encounter between the two took place after the end of the Battle, but both aircraft depicted saw service throughout so I hope I'm safe on that front! Here is the box and sprues: The one thing I will be adding is Propblur propeller blades - the rest will be my attempt at making them to an acceptable standard!- 30 replies

Hi folks, I tend not to do build logs on BM, but thought I'd show a photo of my current wip, the Airfix Bf109E, as I made a somewhat disparaging remark about it on my profile. It is a nice wee kit (the emphasis being on the 'wee', for those of us whose origins are North of Hadrian's Wall), but has some really annoying engineering / fit. Now I can bollix up a kit with an ability matched by few others, but when bits of a new tool Airfix don't fit off the sprue, then I get a bit annoyed. The wing uppers and lowers didn't match up and the lower edge of the LE slats sat proud of the forward edge of the lower wing, also the wing tips and ailerons didn't sit in the same plane, all of which required some fettling of the mating portions of the wing pieces to sort out. The sprue gates are quite oversized and I removed a chunk of the outer edge of the tailplanes (actually the elevators) when I removed them from the sprues with side cutters. That explains the rather odd shape of the outer edge of the elevators in the picture below. In addition, there are some really small pieces that I'm not looking forward to removing from the sprue (Pitot tube, aileron mass balances, gun barrels, etc.). Also removing the mould seams from the tailplane support struts was lots of fun. Right, rant mode is now off. Apart from the above, it's gone together fairly well, although some mechanical deformation of the upper engine cowling piece was necessary to aid fit, and some filler was required at the fuselage / wing underside interface. Anyway, I'm now onto painting, and the second coat of RAF Dark Green sorry, RLM71 dunkelgrun, has just been applied. I'm using the Bf109E colour demarkations from Michael Ullmann's Luftwaffe Colours book and I have just realised that I've got the positions wrong on the starboard wing. Oh poo! Still, we're hopefully on the home straight now, so just have to grit my teeth and get it done. regards, Martin

Dear fellow modellers, I've recently signed up, after several months reading and learning here at Britmodeller. My introduction post can be found here. This is my first RFI post. It's the Airfix Spitfire Mk I 1/72. It was my first model after returning to the hobby and served as a "guinea pig" for my learning of all essential modelling techniques. I did it from 1 July to 9 October 2014. In parallel, I started working on a Revell Hurricane Mk IIc 1/72 (which I concluded shortly after - I'll also post it in the RFI area) and also on an Airfix Grumman Duck (which I only managed to finish by the end of January 2015 - I'll also post it as RFI). Here are the pictures: Since this was my first attempt, it isn't perfect. In fact, I did a lot of mistakes and had to paint most of the aircraft two or three times. In the end, the canopy didn't fit and I had to file it. Some notes on the techniques used: mostly OOB, only added seat belts made fromTamiya tape and antenna wire made from elastic fishing line (painted with a black marker) drilled holes on the exhaust tubes using a 0.3 mm manual mini-drill primed with Tamiya XF-19 sky gray pre-shaded with Tamyia flat black acrylic XF-1 masking for the upper camouflage used blu-tack "worms" plus a combination of Tamyia tape and kitchen cling film (I try to minimize using tape to avoid paint peeling) Mostly painted with Gunze Aquous paints. Flat black was Tamyia acrylic XF-1. Microscale Micro Gloss applied before and after decaling. Used Microscale Micro Set and Micro Sol for decaling. The decals where a bit thick and I ripped some when trying to make them conform to the deep panel lines. Brown wash from Vallejo acrylic line of washes. It was a sludge wash followed by wiping with a moistened swab after 15 min drying time. Chipping of worn areas simulated by dry brushing with silver paint. Not the best option because there wasn't much surface relief for the paint to adhere to. But, on the other hand, the effect is very subtle. Microscale Micro Flat applied after wash and chipping Vallejo pigments used for mud and dirty marks on the undersurfaces, tail wheel and in the main gear legs, wheels, doors and wells. Mixed with flat varnish, resulting in a very mud-like appearance. Vallejo pigments used for exhaust stains and machine gun stains. For the first application I mixed the pigments with flat varnish and didn't work well (seemed like black paint). I had to remove this mess and reapply the dry pigments with a paintbrush, rubbing the pigments on the fuselage and wings. This resulted much better. The pigments were fixed in place with Micro Set. Please let me know what you think. As a first attempt I was pleased enough with the results. The main purpose was learning modeling techniques and this I did achieve. The following models where more perfect than this one, I believe. Thanks for looking. Jaime

Here is my rendition of the 1/72 Revell / Italeri Ju87B-2 Stuka built out of the box as part of my intent to build more BoB aricraft this year. It's a nice easy build and as I don't have much information on the Stuka, I have no clue as to whether the kit is accurate. I must admit I don't care that much either; it looks good. Finish is my usual brush painted Xtracrylix on top (RLM70 schwartzgrun and- *ahem* - RAF dark green masquerading as RLM71). Accuracy be damned! I can actually see the colour demarkation this time. Underside is Revell Aqua Hellblau. Anyhoo, I enjoyed building it, but didn't the Stuka have lots of delicate sticky out bits! Definitely a challenge for sausage fingers here. It's a very clean build as I needed to finish it sharpish, so it's as delivered to 9./StG1 according to the Almark instructions. regards, Martin

Afternoon all, Inevitably, toiling with the Shar has begun to take it's toll, so before it killed my modelling enthusiasm completely, I've decided to put it to the side and resume my BoB project with this beauty. It's another wonderful kit from Eduard, almost as nice as their Hellcat, and progress has gone swimmingly so far, with the interior work complete. The wings have been assembled and are awaiting clean up, so this should come together pretty quickly from now on. Thanks for looking, comments welcomed, Shaun

Whilst making the finishing touches to my Hellcat, I couldn't resist making a start on the next of my Battle of Britain builds, selecting the Tamiya E-3 boxing as the first of two 109s I have planned for my project. The build has progressed quickly as you'd expect of a Tamiya kit, with the interior complete. I've added some pre-painted belts from Eduard as finishing touch, but otherwise it's OOB. Expect progress to be pretty swift! Cheers, Shaun

I am sure this has been debated and delay with elsewhere and I recall some seeing colour pictures which show a more lighter red and blue for the Battle of Britain period for Spitfires and Hurricanes, However "Official Camo and Markings 1939-1945" indicates roundels to be painted in Red and Blue which if one compares the colour chart in the book is the darker colours. Kit manufacturers seem of little help when comparing decals. Was there indeed a lighter shade that was then later changed to the standard seen after 1941?

Inspired by Alpha Delta 201's excellent rendition and kind encouragement, I decided to make my second Britmodeller build J.B. Nicolson VC's Mk1 Hawker Hurricane G-NA. The kit was Airfix's old-tool Mk.1, from their "V.C. Icons" boxing. GN-A was a significant aircraft, being the 'plane in which Flight Lieutenant Nicolson won the only Battle of Britain Victoria Cross and Fighter Command's only VC of the war, an exploit described in the following extract: Air Ministry, 15 November 1940. The KING has been graciously pleased to confer the Victoria Cross on the undermentioned officer in recognition of most conspicuous bravery : Flight Lieutenant James Brindley NICOLSON (39329) No. 249 Squadron. During an engagement with the enemy near Southampton on 16th August 1940, Flight Lieutenant Nicolson's aircraft was hit by four cannon shells, two of which wounded him whilst another set fire to the gravity tank. When about to abandon his aircraft owing to flames in the cockpit he sighted an enemy fighter. This he attacked and shot down, although as a result of staying in his burning aircraft he sustained serious burns to his hands, face, neck and legs. Flight Lieutenant Nicolson has always displayed great enthusiasm for air fighting and this incident shows that he possesses courage and determination of a high order. By continuing to engage the enemy after he had been wounded and his aircraft set on fire, he displayed exceptional gallantry and disregard for the safety of his own life. Unfortunately Wing Commander Nicolson did not survive the war. For more on his career see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Brindley_Nicolson As a build it was pleasant and uncomplicated and it came out looking quite like a Hurricane to my eyes, which is the main thing! Although not really a scratchbuilder by inclination, I was nonetheless moved to do some fairly rudimentary, impressionistic (and now completely invisible) cockpit detailing, put in a cockpit floor to fill the gaping void which would otherwise have been visible through the wheel-wells, and cobble together a pitot tube and a foot stirrup (the latter being made out of a twist of picture wire.) I also had another go at weathering with a combination of dark washes and silver paint on the leading edges, which were then overpainted with some gaps to simulate chipping/flaking. I also tried to do some exhaust staining, which I think was slightly more successful. My painting still leaves something to be desired, though, and I *very* swiftly regretted forgetting to mask-off the cockpit canopy before I sprayed-on the varnish...- 13 replies

This is last model I finished. The aircraft modelled is the DW-O of the 610th RAF Squadron that operated from Biggin Hill in July 1940 during the Battle of Britain. It's my pride. For me, it's the best model I have build so far. The Tamiya kit is excellent with superb fit, great detail and very easy to build. It gave my no trouble at all. It was very relaxing and I enjoyed it very much. Here are some photos from the last stages of WIP with close ups. The exhausts are painted with a mix of Humbrol Metalcote Gun Metal, Metalcote Steel, Metallic Blue, Bronze and afterwards they were dry brushed with Metelcote Gun Metal και Rust. Here are the final photos. And some close-ups that I forgot to take while having the blue background... The model was awarded Bronze Medal at the 32nd IPMS Hellas Exhibition/Contest and I'm very proud of it!

Here is my greek Fairey Battle, the last model I've made. I hope the chipping hasn't been too excessive! I think it is the most realistic 1/72 aircraft I've completed. I started this model by Christmas, but lack of paints delayed it's finishing until very recently. Greetings All! Discovered this site recently and have a few queries. I've always been enamored with the Hawker Hurricane and after some research, it turns out a relative was actually a Hurricane pilot in the Battle of Britain! Though he was a Sergeant and certainly not an Ace, I'd like to honor his memory. I'm in the process of building his two Hurricanes and need some information. Here's what I know: Pilot - Albert Thomas Gooderham, RAF service # 742957 (Sergeant) Mounts - 46 Squadron (post Norway) Hurricane MK 1, serial V6789 shot down over the Thames Estuary 15 OCT 40 (survived) 615 Squadron Hurricane MK IIc, serial Z3841 shot down over Thames Estuary/Channel 02 NOV 41 (KIA) ATTENTION HURRICANE KNOWLEDGE GURUS! I know 46 squadron markings were "PO" during that time, anyone know which letter identifier V6789 carried? or if it was an "A" or "B" color scheme? I'm assuming it was Dark Earth, Green, Sky combo with possibly a black half wing scheme (?) please help. I know 615 markings were "KW" but by NOV 1941 may not have had squadron codes applied. Any ideas on what Hurricane Z3841 would have looked like on that day in November 1941. Any help, direction to historical websites, photos, or general knowledge would be MUCH appreciated! Easy 3 paint Sets Lifcolor Acrylics Lifecolor's release schedule seems rather busy of late, and the latest sets our of the gate are these four handy "Easy 3" sets that contain three bottle of paint suitable for their intended subjects. They are acrylic based, dilute and clean up with water, although their thinners is a much better solution which also helps them spray better. For more information on their use, visit one of the "Buy it Now" links where you'll find some tips on correct mixing and clean-up. Debris 1 & 2 Two sets of paints that help you with your diorama painting. It's not always easy to think what colours various parts of your diorama would be, and this set helps in that respect with descriptive colour names. Set 1Worn Brick (UA737), Deposited Dust (UA738), Broken Plaster (UA739) Set 2 Old Tile (UA740), Stone Wall (UA741), Lime Mortar (UA742) Leaking & Stains This 2 paint set covers the deposits often found on or around machinery and engines. Exhaust Oil Effect (UA261), Dirty Grease Effect (UA262), Grease Effect (UA263) RAF Battle of Britain A threesome of British early war camo colours in one handy box. The Dark Earth looks like a green when you pull it from the box, but a good shaking brings up the brown pigment, so don't be alarmed! Dark Earth (UA537), Dark Green (UA538), Sky (UA539) IDF Army Three shades of green for Israeli Defence Force uniforms. UA 437 Dark IDF Green, UA438 Medium IDF Green, UA439 Light IDF Green War on the Road Three base shades for different types of roads. UA473 Dirt Road, UA744 Middle Eastern Asphalt, UA745 European Asphalt Leaking & Stains - Grime Effects Three shades of goo. UA746 Lime Green, UA747 Dirty Green, UA748 Dirty Green Leaking & Stains - Damp Effects Three satin-gloss colours for dampness and mould. UA749 Vegetable Origin Damp Green, UA750 Vegetable Origin Damp Yellow, UA751 Dark Mould Conclusion Great sets that will broaden your paint palette nicely. I wish there were more instructions on how to use the paints however, as the Leaking & Stains set especially leaves me scratching my head a little. Clearly you're meant to dilute them to apply by brush (as splashes), or spray them to get the desired effect, but a little assistance wouldn't go amiss, even if it were just a link to a website that has some "how to" articles. The RAF set should give RAF modellers a nice handy pack for their BoB era kits as well as sparking a lively debate over the correct shade of the elusive and oft disputed RAF Sky, and the Debris & Rubble has some masterfully blended colours. I've seen broken plaster, and lime mortar on my travels, and they have captured the colours just right, with a subtle hint of pink to them. Recommended. Review sample courtesy of:

Hi everyone! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Denis and I'm from Ukraine. This is my first topic here, so I decided to start with my latest work I completed recently. Tamiya's Spitfire Mk 1. I decided to make a plane which belonged to Robert Doe of 234 squadron. I used Humbrol - Dark Earth, Gunze Mr. Color - Dark green and Revell - Sky for lower surfaces. I painted letter codes using masks and used decals from "Authentic Decals" and other models. I added antenna wire using stretched sprue and used it to imitate hydrolics on landing gears as well. I applied several coats of Valejo Gloss, added some weathering effects with dry brush using pigments and a pastel, made wash (pastels,water and washing liquid mixture) and applied the last coat of Satin Varnish. Well, I think that covers all the process. I hope you will enjoy my work. P.S. There is a one thing I'd like to ask about. I had enough information about the letter codes on the port side of the plane (D-AZ), but I didn't have reliable information on the starboard side. So I applied them in the same sequence, according to a skin for Il-2 I found in tne Net (I will attach it as well)Was it wrong?I DO think that was a mistake. I know that it is to late to change something, but still...I just want to know. So,if anyone has any information about this plane (especially the starboard) please, let me know. Thanks in advance.
