  1. My first Group Build in an age and my first kit for a couple of years! I had a change in personal circumstances with an amicable separation, now in the final stages of divorce. This hampered my ability to build anything at all, but my domestic arrangements have now settled enough to let me get back on the plastic horse! I thinned out a lot of my stash, but kept some that I really wanted to get built, including the 1/48 Eduard Adlertag boxing of the Bf110. I’m not settled on which version I’m going to build yet, but there’s a sharks mouth that’s drawing my eye at the moment! Steve
  2. A new project, after my battle with the Vampires! This time it is Typhoon ZK349 in Battle of Britain colours as flown by 29R Squadron from Coningsby in 2015/2016 commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain as a fine tribute to the only Fighter Command pilot to be awarded the Victoria Cross, during the Battle of Britain – Flt. Lt. Eric James Brindley Nicolson. Typhoon ZK349 has been painted in the colours of Flt. Lt. Nicolson’s 249 Squadron Hawker Hurricane Mk.I GN-A (P3576), which was involved in combat with Messerschmitt Bf 110s of the Luftwaffe over Southampton, on 16th August 1940. Whilst attempting to bale out of his burning Hurricane, Flt. Lt. Nicolson saw a Bf 110 pass in front of his aircraft and, without thought for his own safety, immediately climbed back into his seat and fired on the German aircraft, causing it to dive away to its destruction. Only then did Flt. Lt. Nicholson make good his escape, but not before sustaining significant injuries. 249 Squadron flew from RAF Boscombe Down, my local airfield, during that period. The Trumpeter kit is large and includes detail that I'll pass on, in particular the access doors around the cockpit and almost all of the underwing stores. All the photos I've found show either one centerline fuel tank, or two wing tanks, plus the wingtip pods that seem to be on every Typhoon. For the 2015/2016 period the aircraft was always immaculate, no evidence of staining or wear, so this one will be perfect. The recreation has the undersurface in light aircraft grey, not the original sky, but as I'm making the Typhoon, not a Hurricane it matters not at all. The cockpit is, as ever, the place to start: as with a number of modern aircraft it is not all matt black. The it instructions are a bit lacking in colour details, bur there are plenty of photos on the web, so the next post will be a photo of the cockpit....
  3. One GB I've been really looking forward to, with a smidge of poetic license. On the August 15th 30 Bf 110's were shot down, they had been used for high altitude bomber escorts. However, were easy pickings for the RAF's fighters, when Herman Göring ordered the fighting to stay with the bombers. My plan is to build a diorama of the picture below, using the Tamiya Spitfire kit and Fujimi bf110 kit. The Bf 110 will be straight and level with the starboard engine on fire, with the pilot getting into a position to bail out. I'm using Montex masks for the canopy and insignia belonging to 6./ZG 76 , I will use chicken wire and cotton wool to produce the smoke and some woodland scenics LEDs to produce the flames. To hold the Spitfire in place I will use a metal rod concealed in the smoke, I will be using camouflage masks for the first time with insignia of 92 Sqn QJ*K flown by the youngest fighter Pilot to fly Spitfires Geffrey Wellum. I've gathered a few other bits, the lifecolor Battle of Britain paint set, the AK German paint set, a base with a coastline base picture.
  4. Heya, My first diorama of any sort and first multiple build. Gosh, this took me so long! My personal memorial to the 80th anniversary for the battle of Britain. Airfix 1:48 Hurricane Mk1 Tamiya 1:48 Spitfire Mk1 Airfix 1:72 109E-4 (+1:144 109 for a giggle and first in the scale ... what a fiddle). Idea was to have the 109 crashed below after a forced landing at a slightly smaller scale to create a forced perspective effect as the victorious pair of British fighters passed above. Definitely works from above and some angles, perhaps less so from others. Still, I'm fairly happy with it as it's the first time I've ever attempted any sort of diorama. Propblurs used for the props. I know they're not everyone's cup of tea but I like the effect, especially from a distance on the shelf. First time using EZ line as well instead of sprue. Caused a bit of an issue on the port and starboard roundels on the spit as the white I had to cover the tiny imperfections from the join really didn't match the roundels. Proper stuffed the clear canopy on the spit on starboard too ... but it was a kinda hazy splatter from inside ... no idea what I did. OMG .. Tamiya decals ... argh. Haven't particularly modelled exact aircraft (mainly as the Tamiya decals disintegrated and needed some patching from other parts of the kit), though I did use some Xtradecals for the Hurricane. Wanted to try hairspray chipping for the first time but left them too long between the coats and it was impossible to reveal so had to use a brush ... learnt the lesson for next time, though it's hard to get build / paint sessions close together with a toddler and a teaching job. Lots of learning for next kits. https://flic.kr/s/aHsmQLihCQ Link to Flickr album (can't get the direct insert to work)
  5. Hi All, Here's my attempt at Airfix' MkI Hurricane, modelled as V6799 of 501 (County of Gloucester) Sqn, RAF Kenley, October 1940, This aircraft was flown by P/O (later W/C) Ken McKenzie - on 7th October 1940 he was chasing a damaged Bf109 over the South Coast. Having expended his ammunition he used his wingtip to remove the port tailplane, causing the Bf109 to crash. In doing so the Hurricane's wingtip was also removed, causing McKenzie to force land near Folkestone. He rejoined his unit in quick order and went on to claim at least seven more victories before the end of the battle. Here's a couple of photos of the aircraft: After the forced landing: This was a quick build so no WIP. I used a Montex mask set for all the national insignia, and I am quite pleased with the outcome. I noted from the above photo that the aircraft appeared to have no underwing roundels, so completed the scheme accordingly. The aircraft was only on squadron strength for a very short time, so I kept overall weathering to a minimum. Photos were taken prior to rigging wiith Uschi fine line. Anyway, on to the photos: And a final shot with Dickie Cork's Sea Hurricane: I'm glad to finally have a BoB Hurricane in the collection, and will add to the Defiant I built earlier in the year. I suppose I'd better complete a Spitfire to complete the tryptich... Thanks for looking, Roger
  6. Hi, Just a quick question, I'm working on a spitfire maintenance diorama in 1940 and I wondered what type of fuel tanker(s) would of been used to fuel a spitfire at this time? Many thanks, PlasticSoldier
  7. Hello Everyone, This is my third build for Karen at work. This time I have gone for the "enemy" and provided the BF110, before anyone asks or notices, I am not allowed to put any swastikas on the aircraft. Complete crock I think but I can live with it. I used an Eduard Zoom set for the interior and mask for the canopy, both I will be using again, but not relying on them. Oh I also had an Eduard Brassin MG15, which I also like as well and I will be using the other one that I have. I'm not too sure on the colours, but this is what Vallejo suggest and I am aware of the cock up on the right engine with the wash. I am going with an oil leak for that one Well here are the pictures of said aircraft. For some weird reason, Flory Washes do not like Vallejo RLM66 (or 65 I can not remember).. it's had 4 coats of gloss over it and it still sticks and refuses to budge. Could of done better with the join line and the wash. But more things I will take with me to the next model. That 3 I've done... wow I am in danger of clearing a whole shelf of models in my man cave Comments welcome Kind Regards, Dazz
  8. Hello one and all, A while ago I asked for ideas in the chat section for some models to display for the school I work for. The short story is that, Karen, the Librarian there holds a lunch for all of the veterans on/near Rememberance Day for our local lads (or lasses). This year I suggested that I would build her some models so she could show off to the kids and the veterans could talk about said models. I have finished 3 of them now, and here is the first. And finally a picture of her not baking in the sun. I think this is the first of the Airfix "new" tools I have made, even tho I do have a fair few. I was less than impressed with the decals as mine wouldn't move! I placed them and that was it, they just stuck! I managed it in the end by using another set of decals that I have of the same aircraft (got to get an aftermarket set now). I think that maybe the weathering is a tad too heavy, but I was having so much fun doing it! Boys do like to get dirty and all that... oo-er. This was the first time that I had used EZ-line as well, I know it can really stretch, but I wasn't too sure on that mast. Live and learn huh? All comments for improvement are most welcome. Kind Regards, Dazz
