  1. The last of my 'Battle of Britain' builds, 'Falkes' (supposedly Galland) HA-1112 with the chevron and the victory marks. Built with both the three bladed prop for the static and taxiing scenes, and the 4 bladed prop for the flying scenes. While it may not be historically accurate, I've always loved the look of the HA-1112 in early Luftwaffe markings, it looks so 'shark' like ... Build log here. ... and the 3 blade prop ... One of the Spanish pilots posing with 'Falkes' machine ... Hope you like, thanks for looking, Colin
  2. Here's the first of my double HA-1112 "Battle of Britain" movie builds. It is a highly modified Hobbycraft kit, built to go along with my previously posted Hurricane, and Spitfire from the movie (best aviation movie of all time, IMHO). Hope you like, thanks for looking, Colin build log: HA-1112 build ... please forgive so many pictures, but I'm rather happy with how it turned out!
  3. This is the ICM 1/48 Spitfire IXc, modified into Spitfire Mk IXc, MK297 was the aircraft marked as AI*A, flown by Squadron leader 'Skipper' {Robert Shaw} in the 'taka taka taka' scene. It was built at Castle Bromwich in late 1943. MK297 had also appeared in the film 'The longest day', and the series 'A piece of cake'. It made its way eventually to Hamilton, Ontario, only to be destroyed in the same hangar fire as G-AWLW (Diemert Hurricane). ... again, thanks for all the advice and suggestions on this website! build log ... ICM SPIT build log Cheers, Colin
  4. Well, I finally got around to weathering the Hurricane! To round out a Battle of Britain movie build, I just had to have a Hurricane. So, I modified an old 1/48 Hobbycraft Hurricane Mk IIc into a Canadian produced Mk IIb, with a lot of scratch building, detail parts from a scrapped Ark Hurricane Mk 1, and various parts from the spare parts bin. It is * F, H3418 flown by Squadron Leader Harvey (Christopher Plummer) in the opening airfield staffing scene. The Bob Diemert restored aircraft (CCF c/n 42012, registered as CF-SMI, C-GWPH, and G-AWLW) was in fact a CCF Hurricane Mk IIb. It had the 3 stack round exhaust (not fishtail), it did not have the Mk II style 'kinked' tail wheel, but the earlier Mk I style tail wheel, blanked off generator cooling pipes, no oil collection channel on the upper cowl behind the spinner, A Hamilton Standard prop, and the unique 'Canadian' spinner. Also, I've discovered that this Hurricane made its way eventually to Hamilton, Ontario, only to be destroyed in the same hangar fire that destroyed Spitfire Mk IXc MK297 (another BofB movie vet, marked as AI*A in the 'taka taka taka' scene), an Avenger, an Auster, and a Turb-Commander, Feb 15, 1993. Many thanks to all on this site that offered info, suggestions and critiques. WIP - WIP build posts I know, too many photo's already. well, just one more ... After the fire, the Hamilton aviation museum replaced (?) the lost Hurricane with this fibreglass mockup, a very realistic 1 to 1 scale kit! (I want one!) Thanks for looking, Colin
  5. To round out my Battle of Britain movie builds, I just had to have a Hurricane. So, I'm modifying an old Hobbycraft Hurricane Mk IIc into a Canadian produced Mk XII, with a lot of scratchbuilding, detail parts from a scrapped Ark Hurricane Mk 1, and various parts from the spare parts bin. It will be * F, H3422 flown by Christopher Plummer in the opening airfield staffing scene. ... the rest of the fleet, just awaiting weathering ... Hey, you have to get your inspiration somewhere, don't you? Colin
  6. Doing things the hard way is getting to be a habit with me, I guess. I had a Hobbycraft 'Civilshmitt' and an Academy HA-1112 kits in the stash and decided it was time to build them. They are the same plastic in both, but are very basic, and have some glaring inaccuracies. I decided to replace the windscreen with leftover Eduard's windscreens, this required narrowing the forward fuselage by about .040" and cutting out the triangular fuselage section ahead of it. Next step was to use some True Details resin cockpits, with some scratch built additions. The rocker covers were just rounded blobs and had to be completely filled with 5 minute epoxy, and then extensively ground, filed, reshaped and re-scribed to something closer to reality. With rescribing and the Eduard's windscreen (with some extra vents added), the nose is coming into shape. The 4 bladed spinner needed to be lengthened by .060", and the blade cutouts filled and recut. The spinner also had to be re-profiled, and the front opened. (blades cut off and brass pinned for attachment later) The 3 bladed spinner is actually a spare Airfix Spit V spinner turned down to the correct shape for the 'conical' shape of the HA-1112 and used spare Hamilton Standard blades. On the lower nose and belly, the rad outlet was incorrectly shaped, the wheel wells were empty, and the belly fairing was way to short, with inaccurate vents. ... a photo of a stock build (downloaded from the web) the actual belly ... the rebuilt belly, and the reworked wheel wells. (Fairing was extended using a spare Airfix Spit V windshield fairing widened by .060") They are looking more like HA-1112's now and will be finished as a red nosed 4 bladed machine, and as "Falke's" 3 bladed, yellow nosed machine with the cheveron. Hope you like so far, Colin
  7. Just because you can never have too many Spitfires, while waiting for paint to dry on my triple Malta Spitfire builds, I started an ICM Spitfire Mk IXc from the movie 'Battle of Britain'. The ICM kit is no Eduards, but is fairly accurate in outline, (and is in the stash, anyhow). I started with the wings, removing the canons, canon bulges, and lots of filling, sanding, and rescribing. I also had to shorten the landing gear legs quite a bit, replace the inaccurate wheels, and reprofile the fat propeller blades. I filled the lower cockpit wing roots and added stringers, scratch built a throttle and landing gear control, and then turned to the ugly seat. it needed thinning, new sides, bottom and front, as well as a back pad. I'm using an Eduard's photo etch QR belt (this is 1969, after all), and also using a left over tubular exhaust from an Eduard's kit. I've got some paint on the interior, so close up can begin ... Oh yes, I also had to do something with the weird square spade grip! It's going to be open canopy, but with the access door closed, Robert Shaw's 'Rabbit leader' has a nice set of crosses across the door that I don't want to loose! Thanks for looking, Colin
