  1. I was sitting under the fan the other evening, eating fresh-off-the-tree mangoes and feeling glad that the extant cyclone wasn't going to come near me (they're no fun, I feel for the people that it did hit), when I remembered that even though I no longer had the Matchbox Beaufighters that I had originally planned to enter into this GB, I did still have a Bf110. I washed the nectar from my hands and went digging in the stash. Ta-dah, there it be! It's a Hong Kong production kit, so I don't feel in the least bit bad about building it. The colours, as always, are glorious. The decals have apparently been feeding the cockroach population for a while, but I think that they'll be OK. If they're not, the LHS has an Eduard 110 with almost the same markings, so I'll go and buy that if necessary. With the decision made, clean up and assembly was started. Photos of progress will follow in due course.
  2. I'm going to close my model year of 2022 with this Bf110 from Eduard. Hope you all have a happy new year. See you in 2023. Nanond
  3. Greetings from Italy. Just finished the Eduard bf110 C in a strange unusual scheme as a mix of german and italian insigna. This model represents one of the few bf110 operated as night fighter by Regia Aeronautica "235^ Squadriglia" based at Lonate Pozzolo airport in early 1943. This airport was about 40 km North West of Milan and now is still in use but better known as Milan Malpensa (MXP). The Edurd kit is very nice but I would say not for beginners. Painting has been done usign Gunze colours and spray finishing. Weathering is a mix of oil wash and pastels. Decals are from the italian brand Tauro Models. Enjoy pictures and please feel free to comment. Cheers Andy
  4. After about ten years since I started working on this model, I would like to present you this model in the RFI! I wouldn't say much about the model, it is already well known to everyone. A very good model of Revell, but the appearance of the new Eduard's 110 overshadowed it. As far as I remember, the fit is decent, but not great. The details are really beautiful, especially the cockpit. RevelL decals are standard excellent, but I must say that they are still a bit thicker. Gunze's chemistry failed to neutralize transparent film. From the some extra touches, here ad there the panels are overlapped and the exhaust pipes are hollowed in. Painting with Model Master enamel authentic colors (the first time for me) and I'm really pleasantly surprised by how easy they are to spray (for classic enamels)! And their colors are just to my taste! The weathering was done using a stencil for the effect of marbling (more precisely, granite ;D), wooden watercolor crayons, pigments, tamiya washes, silver pencil and small chipping done with a fine brush. Stencils for the marble effect are very practical, but it is still desirable to adjust them with your own hands, so to speak (which I did not do), because you often feel an unnaturally sharp border. My problems were caused by the Montex mask, which left horrible amounts of glue, so in the end the cabin frame was painted 3 times, and finally with a brush. I would like to thanks our colleagues from MAKETARSKI KUTAK (http://www.maketarskikutak.com/index.php) for their crucial help regarding this problem. Only after taking pictures I did notice that I forgot to paint the radiators... I took pictures in two sets because I still struggle with photography. On a white background, the images turned out to be too dark, but perhaps still closer to the real model, while with a dark gray background, the images are clearly visible, but the RLM75 and 76 are too bright and the weathering is overemphasized. In the end, despite a certain number of mistakes, I must say that I am satisfied with this fast and experimental (for me) work! All criticisms, suggestions and praises are more than welcome! And the pictures at the end: The details: And a few WIP pictures with unfortunately ruined finished paint job. I over-aggressively polished the model and ruined the finished paint job which I did not adequately correct...
  5. This is my Revell rebox of the Dragon 1/32 Messerschmitt Bf110. I started this last July and wanted to do the best I could with it as I really like this aircraft it's a very good looking plane. I spent almost seven months building it which includes possibly a month on its own just for painting. The model went together well with a few minor issues that were easily fixed around the wing root. The paints are Mr Colour and Tamiya I mixed various shades to get the desired colour for the camouflage. I the ccolours went over a black base which was then protected with klear floor polish and I then used flory models sand and black washes as I wanted the aircraft to have a dusty used ans battered appearance. Once that was sealed in I used AK pigments Sienna which helped add to the dusty conditions of North Africa. I also dusted the pigments over the canopy as the glass was far too clear and although absolutely brilliant was too clear and clean. I sealed the pigments in with more klear twice more to get more dust onto the surfaces and canopy. I did the same with the figures. I am yet to get accomplished at figure painting but I am satisfied with the clothing and highlighted details with washes etc. I used a drill to create the battle damage which enabled me to show off one engine. I added lead wire into the destroyed engine to add more detail as it'sa.really nice feature on the kit. The base was a £5 cork board from Tesco with cheap pollyfilla (filler for dry wall) and some foam underneath so that there was a bit of depth to the base I wanted the emergency landing to be a split second from catastrophe but they stopped just in time. I did add dents to the nose as well as I wanted it to appear as though stones etc had been kicked up by the crash landing and caused damage. Anyway I am so happy to call this finished and happy with the result. Enjoy the photos and all comments welcome. I couldn't do anything about the back ground as it's a small room but the sunlight lent itself very well for the scene I have here.
  6. My next build continues with Erprobungsgruppe 210 - this time I want to build a Bf110D. I have no link to this other than my mother lives in Southampton, over which the aircraft was targeting the Supermarine works on the night of 24th Sept 1940. Interestingly one of my other builds, a Spitfire flown by Crelin Bodie, is mentioned in my main reference source for the build, Bombsites over Britain, by John J Vasco. His Sqn, 66 Sqn RAF, engaged 3 x Bf110 over Aldebugh, downing 1 x Bf110D. This build will be of Bf110D-0 of the 1st Staffel, Wr 2284 coded S9 + HH. I will be also using the 1/72 build that @Stew Dapple completed back in 2014 as my paint reference etc as he'd done some previous research that showed a slightly different approach than the decals set. The aircraft was hit by anti aircraft fire that night and crashed into the channel. The 22 year old pilot, Lt Ulrich Freiherr von de Horst and 24 year old W/T Op, Ogefr Franz Ollers were listed as killed in action, their bodies never recovered. Ogefr Ollers would have celebrated his 25th birthday 2 days later. The Luftwaffe list the aircraft as shot down by fighters, although there are no traceable claims. Sold as new, when I opened the box there are signs of a few scratches, maybe sanding and copious notes on the instructions - thats E Bay for you! Should be fine though. Have some Montex Masks - didn't fancy that masking task ! @Stew Dapple - you mention some tinkering with the personal marking/unit marking on your thread, can i ask what that was? I have not done any WW2 Luftwaffe camo before, so plan a bit of practice on a paint mule. I have Mr Paint paints, but not sure it will work with a stipple brush etc, also have Mr Color that I may be able to thin to allow this. Any top tips on mottling appreciated - one of my builds will need real tight mottle that an airbrush just won't do....
  7. Greetings to you all, looks like we are getting a new re-boxing of Eduard's 1/72 Bf 110C/D. The distributor leaflet suggests that it will be a limited edition titled "Adlertag" and will presumably cover markings of aircraft participating in the Battle of Britain. Judging by other releases, there is a some chance that it will have some resin add-ons, or perhaps just a larger decal sheet. We shall see. Jan
  8. I'm pleased to present my latest build, the Eduard 1/72 Bf110. It's a lovely kit which goes together with no issues at all. I've made it pretty much out of the box including the PE provided by Eduard - look at the sight on that rear gun! The only extras are the riveting, a bit of plasticard to add some detail in the wheelbays and aerial wires from stretched sprue. She's airbrushed with Tamiya and Mr Color acrylics and weathered with artists oils. The huge school boy error I made early on in the build was to use the wrong fuselage parts for the 110D I wanted to complete but I've made peace with the mistake and glad I stuck with the scheme even if the life raft compartment at the rear is missing... I'm happy with how this turned out in the end and enjoyed trying some new things along the way, especially with the weathering. The WiP is here, thanks to everyone who dropped in along the way: Enjoy the pics! Thanks for taking the time to take a look, any comments or questions, let me know!
  9. Hello guys, here's my most recently completed model! It's Heinz Wolfgang Schnaufer's Messerschmitt Bf 110G-4 from Revell/Pro Modeller. I used Print Scale and Xtradecal decals to get this model finished.
  10. Hello all - Just finished my Airfix 110. Built pretty much OOB - added some Eduard seatbelts, some Mig rigging for the antenna and replaced the under side circular antenna with some wire. I attempted to improve the cockpit details with some scratch built elements. I used the kit scheme - Staffel II / Zerstorergeschwadar 1, Northern France 1940-1941. The scheme is very dark - RLM 70 / 71 so I attempted a very worn air frame look to try and make it a little more interesting - I think this was successful but I sacrificed colour accuracy in the process. The kit itself is far from an accurate representation so I wasn't too concerned. Still, I'm pretty happy with the result. Tried a bunch of new techniques and learned alot. I've got the Eduard version which is far more accurate so it will be interesting to see them side by side when that's completed. For the cost, this is a very nice kit and was fun to build. There were plenty of fit issues but not too bad - lots of sanding and some putty work will be required - quite typical for some airfix kits in this scale. Decals were very nice - I added swastikas from XtraDecal. The kit comes with a good selection of long distance fuel tanks and bombs - however I opted for a clean fit out as I love the lines on this aircraft. Painted with Tamiya Acrylics, different brands of oils and pigments for the weathering. I had difficulty photographing this model - the colours change quite dramatically depending on the light which is how it behaves in real life... so the photos do represent this. There's a wip here for anyone who's interested - with a bonus side thread on New Zealand beer Thanks for looking - comments and criticism is welcome. Cheers John
  11. I would build a Bf110G-2 with belly 37mm gun for my friend. When searching photos, I found an article building eduard's kit: http://modellboard.net/index.php?topic=37170.0 The author removed rear-firing MG81Z, replaced this area with a large tank. I don't understand German, in translator it reads"The central part of the tank of a 1:48 Revell-Eurofighter formed the basis for the tank of the GM-1 system. I built the cannon magazine in front of the radio seat out of round profile and plastic strips." So GM-1 needs such a large tank? On Bf109 there's only a much smaller one behind cockpit. Although Bf110 consumes twice of Bf109...By the way, which fuel(or liquid) cap fits GM-1 tank? Historic photo of ZG76 indicates rear MG omitted, so it's a character of R1 conversion? Also WGr.21 reduced to one under each wing. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Editted BK3.7 based on Flak 18, same magazine-fed. So the crew needed to manually reload the cannon?
  12. So I had originally entered the Academy A-10 (Iraqi Freedom) kit in to this GB but unfortunately this has suffered from irreparable damage caused by me stupidly knocking it flying off the bench. After a fair amount of expletives and raised blood pressure, I have since gathered my composure and being the bigger man that I am have decided to continue with the GB but only this time with the following kit: This is a superb looking kit with some excellent detailing - particularly for the cockpit. It comes with a variety of options for paint schemes and I am drawn to 2 at the moment - either the one on the front of the box or this one: As always - your assistance and feedback on helping me choose the scheme would be much appreciated. So in the meantime I've made a start on putting the cockpit together in its basic form with a bit of detail painting in readiness for the washes and PE to go in next. So this is how things stand at the moment: I've follwed this up by getting the RLM02 base coat on the fuselage and undercarriage section on the wings: So more progress to follow soon - hopefully this time I'll be able to make sure that it stays firmly on the bench!!!
  13. Ok so I have reached a stage in my modelling where I am thinking I may have sufficient airbrush 'time' served to have a go at some of the German WW2 aircraft I have in my ever growing stash! Whats put me off so far is the 'mottling' but I would really like to master this technique so can anyone give me any tips or point in the right direction on BM or anywhere on how to do this effectively. I should say I am using an Iwata HP-C + in terms of airbrushes (if that makes any difference). Any videos I can watch I guess would be most useful! thanks Chris
  14. Dear Fellow Modellers I heard good reports of the new Eduard 1/72 Bf110 series and they weren't wrong! I added Eduard resin wheels, and rear MG15 as well as Quickboost exhausts. The markings are from the kit as ZG76, an aircraft brought down in the latter part of the Battle of Britain near Tonbridge. ZG76 retained their old fashioned RLM70 and 71 scheme throughout the battle. The Bf 110 had a good record in the Battle of France with the best kill to loss of any fighter by my analysis. But in the Battle of Britain they had less chance of carrying out bounces due to radar and the request to escort the slower bombers more closely. Their best hope was to make one shooting pass and then clear off, not to slow down or engage in dogfighting. A defensive circle neither protected the bombers nor guaranteed their safety. I hope you enjoy the pilots canopy opening lever with its red toggle? Regards Andrew
  15. So I thought I would pick up something nice and simple to keep me going until my SU-33 & MiG 29 arrive from China. Browsing around the many excellent stalls at Bolton model show I decided upon this gem (£16): I have a 1/32 Eduard Bf109 E-4 on the bench which kind of swayed me to this kit, as I have found the Emil a nice model to build, apart from the shocking fit of the lower wing to the fuselage. ( I have had to strip the paint off the Emil as I found that Humbrol clear over Gunze Sangyo Aqueous is a non starter , I will probably paint both together to save on paint / time) Not knowing anything about this kit, I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box to find 9 sprues and a photo etch set.... So much for the quick build. I am no expert on the Bf110 so I'm going to build OOB, there is more than enough detail in this kit. As for any inaccuracies with the kit, feel free to point them out and I may try to correct. I think I will go with this colour scheme: No being one to hang about, I have started on the pilots tub. The white lever is replacement after I had a dose of the death grips with my tweezers and the original is now the property of the Carpet Monster . Thanks for looking WildWeasel Finished article is here!
  16. And all through the skies, Not a creature was stirring not even the flies. The ammo was stacked by the cannons with care, In hope that the Englanders soon would be there. Hey all After my brief bout of insanity, during which I constructed a car model (see http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234991043-deuces-wild/) I have returned to the side of light and reason with yet another aircraft Today I present Revell's 1/48 Bf 110G-4 finished as the example flown by Obst. Hans-Joachim Jabs of NJG 1 in the spring of 1945. Enjoy... So the Revell/Promodeller Bf 110 gets a lot of criticism for supposedly inaccurate engine nacelles... I don't know about you but it still looks like a Bf 110 to me, so it can't be that bad. The kit went together quite well, with some, but not terrible seams to clean up, mostly at the unusual wing to fuselage join. The prop hubs required the most work as they were slightly mis-molded (is that a word?). This required plastic sheet and putty to fix. The cockpit is second to none and only requires careful painting and some harnesses. The radar array was scratch built, as the kit arrays are attached directly to the sides of the nose, whereas Jabs' plane carried the antennas as depicted. All markings were masked and painted with use of a Montex masking set which also supplied masks for the canopy. The camouflage was done freehand with custom mixed Tamiya colours adapted from those used by J.M. Villalba in his RLM Painting DVD, for the RLM 75 and 76. The exhausts were painted with Dark Iron lightly misted with Vallejo Rust and slathered with dark wash. Just realized I forgot to install the rear machine gun before pictures... it's err.. out for maintenance. Yeah, that's believable Regards
  17. Hello Everyone, This is my third build for Karen at work. This time I have gone for the "enemy" and provided the BF110, before anyone asks or notices, I am not allowed to put any swastikas on the aircraft. Complete crock I think but I can live with it. I used an Eduard Zoom set for the interior and mask for the canopy, both I will be using again, but not relying on them. Oh I also had an Eduard Brassin MG15, which I also like as well and I will be using the other one that I have. I'm not too sure on the colours, but this is what Vallejo suggest and I am aware of the cock up on the right engine with the wash. I am going with an oil leak for that one Well here are the pictures of said aircraft. For some weird reason, Flory Washes do not like Vallejo RLM66 (or 65 I can not remember).. it's had 4 coats of gloss over it and it still sticks and refuses to budge. Could of done better with the join line and the wash. But more things I will take with me to the next model. That 3 I've done... wow I am in danger of clearing a whole shelf of models in my man cave Comments welcome Kind Regards, Dazz
  18. Bf 110C-4 AX772, 1426 Flight RAF built for the Messerschmitt Bf 110 STGB . My first Group Build, and my first finished model for 2015. I have never built a German aircraft before, but a photo of a captured Bf110C-4 tickled my fancy. The aircraft is Bf 110C-4 AX772. This was originally a Luftwaffe reconnaissance machine brought down near Goodwood in July 1940. It was then repaired at RAE Farnborough, tested and eventually found its way to 1426 Flight RAF, the unit responsible for evaluating and demonstrating captured enemy aircraft. It would appear to have been painted in a couple of different schemes. I chose the later ocean grey/dark green over yellow colour scheme, which looks rather striking to me. Build thread can be found here. Brush painted with Tamiya acrylics with a final matt coat of Italeri Flat Acryl. Made grubby with the application of water-colours. Thanks to Dave for the reference photos and everyone else for the supportive and helpful comments - it really helped getting my modelling mojo back. Thanks for looking.
  19. Hi All I'm jumping in here as a (slightly) late entrant with Dragon's Bf110D-3. I've turned up this photo via Hyperscale of what looks to be the actual aircraft shown on the box art... Usually I'm one for browsing the aftermarket decal selection, but since I've owned the kit I've not seen anything I prefer to this so think I'll be sticking with it. I'll be plucking the kit from the garage tonight, and should have some progress posted up fairly soon Jon
  20. Bf110C-6 2N+RH of 1./EprGr.210, St.Omer, July 1940 This is the Eduard 1/72 Bf110C-6 Limited Edition built for the Bf110 STGB build thread here This model represents the aircraft flown by Leutnant Erich Beudel and his gunner Obergefreiter Heinrich Diemer, which took off at 16.35 on 29 July 1940 to take part in the gruppe's attack on the convoy codenamed 'CAT'. As the attack developed the 110's were intercepted by Hurricanes of 151 Squadron and this aircraft was one of those damaged in the attack and later crash-landed back at St.Omer. Ltn. Beudel was unhurt but Heinrich Diemer was hospitalised with bullet wounds. Erich Beudel would be killed flying another 110C-6 (the S9+TH) later in the Battle of Britain and Heinrich Diemer would return to duty but was later posted as missing on the Russian Front in September 1942. This aircraft was one of six 110C-6's originally issued to 1./ZG1 and taken with them when they were detached to form the 1st Staffel of ErprGr.210 in July 1940. Although they had their new unit badge painted on, they retained their old '2N' codes from ZG1 until new aircraft were taken on charge at the start of August 1940 when all had the 'S9' gruppe codes applied - this did not apply to the subject aircraft as it appears to have been written off in the crash landing. Info from John Vasco's very interesting and informative book on ErprGr.210 'Messerschmitt Bf110: Bombsights over England'. I enjoyed building this kit, though I found it a bit challenging in places compared to the other two I built in that some of the kit parts needed modification to fit the resin parts and I had some difficulty with the assembly - whether as a result of the surgery to the kit parts, bad luck or ham-fistedness I cannot say for sure - overall though it was easier than I had expected and I am pleased with the end result. Cheers, Stew
  21. My 11yr old daughter decided that she wanted to build a model plane, so off we went to the local Hobbycraft with some Christmas money burning a hole in her pocket. After much deliberation, she settled on the Airfix Bf110C-2 - purely because she likes the shark's teeth on the nose! Also on the shelf was the Bf110E-2 Trop, so I decided that we would do a parallel build together. She's done the vast majority of the cutting and trimming of parts (new knife skills for her and palpitations for me!), she used my airbrush to paint it (Lifecolour and Tamiya acrylics), did all her own glueing and sanding. When it came to the canopy we used the painted Sellotape method (thanks to my 1974 Airfix book of plastic modelling) which looks great. No help was given with the decals except for the shark's teeth which needed a few cuts and a drop of Micro Sol. My model was done in the same way with a bit of pre and post shading, plus oils to highlight the panel lines. The kits went together very well and, in my opinion, look very good together on the shelf! We'll have to see where this takes her... Concentrating hard...
  22. I can almost feel the grass growing under my feet, so I would like to start my second build... It's another one of these: I'll be finishing it in the markings of this aircraft from Eprobungsgruppe 210 (the middle one): ...from the Authentic Decals sheet 72-40 for the Bf110D: I've bought the Quickboost exhausts to add to it as I was very impressed with them, and their ETC 500 bomb-rack... which actually doesn't look very different from that provided by Eduard, but I will use it anyway... ... and it will be painted with Phoenix Precision Paints RLM65/71/02: So today I will be mostly assembling cockpit components and will hopefully get a coat of RLM02 on them before the day is out Cheers, Stew
  23. Bf110D-0/B S9+HH of 1./EprGr.210, Denain/Boulogne-Ost, September 1940 I've just finished this, the Eduard 1/72 Bf110C/D Profipack Edition built for the Bf110 STGB, build thread is here This model represents the aircraft flown by Leutnant Ulrich Freiherr von der Horst and his gunner Obergefreiter Franz Öllers, which was destroyed on 24 September 1940 following the gruppe's second raid of the day on the Supermarine factory at Woolston. The aircraft crashed in the channel off Southampton and Ltn. von der Horst and Gfr. Öllers were both killed. Here is a picture of the real S9+HH The kit was built more or less OOB, but with the kit exhausts replaced by the Quickboost ones and the decals are from the Authentic Decals Bf110D set. The aerial wire is made from EZ Line. The Eduard kit is beautiful, a real pleasure to build; nicely complex without being difficult and superbly engineered from start to finish and produces a very good result for very little effort The paints used were Phoenix Precision Paints RLM65, 71 & 02 and RLM24 Dunkelblau for the propeller spinners - the Phoenix paints performed flawlessly as usual. I painted the bombs in Humbrol 65 so they didn't look too much like part of the aeroplane, but if I'd known the difference in shade and tone would be that great I would have cut it with a dash of white... but never mind, I think it is one of the best - if not the best - model I have ever made and I am very happy with it. Perfection I don't do, and I hope I never do because it will be all downhill from there . Thanks very much for your attention, Cheers, Stew
  24. Hi All Time to join the GBs rather than watch from the sidelines, this one will be OOB. I'm also joining the KUTA & Bomber Command GBs, if I finish the 3 it will be a blooming miracle ! Cheers Pat
  25. Bf110C-1 M8+FH of 1./ZG76, Norway, April 1940 Finished this yesterday, the Eduard 1/72 Bf110C/D Profipack Edition built for the Bf110 STGB, build thread is here This aircraft, flown by Unteroffizier Helmut Mütschele and gunner Gefreiter Karl Lorey, was shot down on 09 April 1940 by Sergeant Kristian Fredrik Schye of the Royal Norwegian Air Force, flying Gloster Gladiator No.427. Helmut Mütschele and Karl Lorey survived the crash without injury and were taken as Prisoners of War by Norwegian forces. Minutes later Sergeant Schye was shot down by Leutnant Helmut Lent in the M8+DH - Lent's fifth victory and the one that made him an ace, later he would run up an enormous score as a night-fighter pilot. Sergeant Schye was slightly wounded by cannon shell fragments but was released from hospital after a couple of days. This was one of the best-engineered kits I have ever built, it was a pleasure pretty much from start to finish and was almost entirely OOB as everything you might need is provided, however I used the Quickboost exhausts as they are nicer than the (perfectly adequate) kit ones, and added the aerial wire from EZ Line - note that the B and C-1 series of the Bf110 had wires attaching to both tailfins, the C-2 onwards had a single aerial wire to the starboard fin. The paints used were Phoenix Precision Paints RLM 65, 70, 71; the decals were partly kit-provided (national markings, stencils and the 'M8' part of the aircraft's codes), DP Casper (the locomotive badge on the nose, from the markings for Helmut Lent's aircraft in the Operation Weserübung decal set) and Superscale decal sheet 72-722 (the 'FH' of the aircraft's codes). Cheers, Stew
