  1. We have what is now the BBFM's MK356 Spitfire LF Mk.IXe as she hopefully would have looked the day before D-Day. LF meant she had the Merlin 66 fitted and was used as a ground attack plane. She was attached to the RCAF Squadron 443 Build wise, it's a superb plane. The fit is stupendous, if a little TOO tight in places and for £95 the level of detail is superb. I've modified her to an E wing although I'm sure Airfix will bring out an E wing variant in time for Christmas maybe. Lots of extra pipes etc on the engine which is a bit bare TBH and the E wing conversion kit Aerocraft. Sven at 1ManArmy was superb in helping me get a mask for her serial number and his masks for the kit in general are without equal in my opinion. Peter at Airscale as ever provided the cockpit detail. Link to the build is here. Thanks for looking and blue skies to all.
  2. "To Remember The many" The Tamiya Lancaster 1/48 Welcome Dear Brit Modellers to my next endeavor into plastic. let me explain what is going on. A month or so ago I had a message in my inbox from @isaneng asking whether I would consider building either XV298 or PA474. He is a flight engineer who has in his own words "Crashed one and fly the other with pride" I have never been asked this before and as anyone who has ever followed any of my builds you must know that in actual fact I know very little about air craft and I'm learning while building. ( its fun that way ) As serial numbers mean very little to me I googled them and found out that one was a Hurcules and the other was the one or the two remaining flight worthy Lancaster bombers. Needless to say I was agog. I have always wanted to build a Lanc since I was a boy. My old man flew back from the Suez Crisis in an Avro York and he always tells the story of the engine setting on fire just after they took off and had to head back for repairs. I know it wasn't quite an Lancaster but It was close. Shocked and a little bewildered I looked at the Tamiya Lancaster I had bought for my 40th by my folks. It's HUGE and I needed a nudge in the right direction to start it and I think this was it. I got back in touch with Rich and he explained that he is a Air engineer for the BBMF, I said I had a Lancaster in the stash and would build it next as this seemed like the nudge I was after. He asked if I could make the "Phantom of the ruhr" as that is how PA474 was painted when he began flying with her. Kindly he offered to buy the decals but I couldn't let him do that. (very nice offer though) Well over the past month while I have been finishing off my lightning I couldn't think of anything else but the Lancaster and bought a whole bunch of goodies to make her as good as I can possible make her. hopefully I can do her justice and I hope you will join me on possibly my longest build yet. I think this one is going to be for the long haul. I'm going to be quite accurate but I won't get bogged down in little details if it means I stall. I have read many, many build threads on this kit and I'm aware of some of the problems. I can't fix them all but I'll try my best to make a worthy effort. I bought the Haynes Lancaster book as a reference manual, I had no idea that PA474 was the main reference point for the book which gave me a little shiver. The photo in the Tamiya instructions is of PA474 and the kit was first released in 1975, the year I was born. The stars were aligned, Here we go. All I needed was a name for the build, flicking through the book this morning I stopped on the last page and saw this. I lay the book down to take a pic in the upstairs room and that familiar and wonderful morning light came streaming in almost giving acceptance to what I was about to undertake. So please join me if you will on a bumpy ride of wonder trying to make a worthy dedication to those brave souls who never returned, to the ones that did and to the ones that keep the legend alive today.
  3. "To Remember The many" The Tamiya Lancaster 1/48 RFI Good evening fellow Britmodellers, let me present my longest build to date, it’s been Seven long months and a lot of blood sweat and Tears to get this iconic bird over the finish line. If you followed the WIP you’ll be aware of the back story so I won’t re tread old ground. If you’re interested in the WIP you can find it here. I’ll keep this short and sweet and get on with the pictures. I hope you enjoy the shots. I wished I had a brighter day to take them but as autumn looms so does the light. c'est la vie. That’s all folks. I know there’s a lot but I figured I could endulge in this centenary year. ❤️ I’ll run through what was used. Tamiya Lancaster 1975 1/48 (revised version) BIG ED (Photo etch) interior exterior bomb bay. masks belts etc. Tamiya Acrylic paints. Windsor and Newton oils. Flory washes. Tamiya weathering pigments. jewellers wire. Plasticard and various plastic rod sizes. Haynes manual. The BM hive mind. @isaneng‘s invaluable insight and research pictures of PA474. @corsaircorp‘s Lancaster engine and wing parts that reside in the nacelles. I do hope I have done justice to this wonderful part of our history. The many will never be forgotten. Thank you all for taking time to view this dedication to PA474 and all the brave souls. “The Many” John.
  4. A 1/144 scale picture/diorama built for a friend. The original Crown Lancaster and Minicraft Dakota. The Lanc and Dak at rest with BBMF crew, re-enactors and veterans looking around. Build thread here -
  5. Hi guys, I do not begin to think I can take pics as well as some on this site, but I thought I might show you a few from this evening's show at Southport. It was good to see the Lancaster back in the air, and the lighting was beautiful, so I apologise if there are more than a couple of the old Avro. All photos taken with a Sony bridge camera, so no fancy lenses for me! The most difficult aspect of the evening is that the sun goes down in the background, so one minute you are dealing with lens flare, the next, the plane moves and you are against a darker sky. The auto function struggled so I had to go to manual settings. Therefore, some may look a bit over exposed. Anyway, hope you like at least one or two. The last one is "Otto". A bit of a barking pilot who has strapped all sorts of pyrotechnics, mortars and other blatantly explosive devices to his helicopter in the name of entertainment. A bloody good show, but possibly one sandwich short of a picnic. Anyway, I will be back there on Sunday to see Sally B, the BBMF, Bronco and others. If the Gods are happy, I might get some more photos to show anyone who might be interested. Bye for now, the Lemur.
  6. Hello all, This is the next project which should (!) Be an easy one.... For the BofB GB I did three hurricanes, these didn't get completed, which meant I also didn't even start the spitfire's! I had planned on building two from the Xtradecals 75th BofB sheet, so these are still going a had but in here.... Joining them will be a guest from the airfix bbmf that was given to me when I left my old job... what a kind bunch they are. So first up is the airfix mki spitfire boxing of DW-K This will be be oob apart from using the Xtradecals set below I wanted something a bit different so went for GR-U as it still has the old style roundels and black/white/aluminium. Next up is the bbmf mki/ii spitfire boxing, this comes with transfers for a mki kit from the BofB but again waned something different from normal sky/DE/DG so kit and transfers option below. Last up is the airfix pr mkxix spitfire from the bbmf boxing, this one is going to be a gift to my sister for my nephews room and will have his initials on the wings. Pic's below I plan to get some work done over the weekend so will post as soon as i get it done, I also plan to get these finished before Christmas. Feel free to tag along! Rob

  8. PLEASE READ So, news has it that the 2 Lancasters and Vulcan will be flying together at RAF Waddington on Thursday and then parked on the runway (21/08/14) The AVRO aircraft will be there for some time, but it will be ideal to get there early. Here - Is the article http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafwaddington/newsweather/index.cfm?storyid=11B3DBF1-5056-A318-A802C5A20D39A135 I'm NOT going, but I don't know about anyone else but this was a short notice thing so sorry about the sloppy look of posts :3 PM Me if you want to know anything else http://www.globalaviationresource.com/v2/2014/08/19/aviation-feature-bill-ramsey-on-leading-the-vulcan-and-lancaster-formation/ This is an interview/article with the pilot ^ So, again, 2XLancasters, 1XVulcan, RAF Waddington Sorry for the sloppy post, please read the 2 articles. Dylan
  9. Hi Some photos from Biggin Hill on Friday afternoon are below. It was great seeing the 2 Lancasters.
  10. Here are some pictures of my completed 1/72 scale Lancaster's. They have both been somewhat modified; the work in progress can be found here: '>1/72 Lancasters - Revell and Airfix - simultaneous builds Hope you like them, thanks for looking! Karl
  11. Hi Chaps, I fancied adding a Lancaster to my collection of builds, so I'm going to attempt to simultaneously build two; an Airfix B.III Special 'Dambusters' Lancaster as ED932 AJ@G and a Revell B.I I'm going to convert in to the BBMF Lancaster PA474 I'm going to try and modernise the Airfix fit a bit by adding some scratch built interior detail based on the Revell kit plus come corrections to the upkeep mine and other details appropriate for this aircraft. The Revell kit, whilst being more modern and better detailed also has some fairly well documented errors. I'll be trying to correct these as best as I can whilst thinking about how the kit differs from a standard B.I with me wanting to represent the BBMF Lancaster, including the Avro Lincoln rudders and undercarriage, Shackleton Mk.II wheels and the Airbus A340 tail wheel. Whilst I'm going to attempt to get them 'right' I'm sure I'll make some mistakes along the way with something, so apologies in advance. These are the two kits I'll be using: I'll be using the kit's own decals where I can, plus others from the spares box. The roundels for the Airfix kit were out of register, a replacement set were kindly supplied by Airfix spares department, however with the kit being very old the first replacements were just as bad as mine, so they substituted them with a set of BBMF decals where I'll just be using the roundels. Wish me luck! Karl
  12. Hi Everyone, I just thought I would share some of my photos from today's visit to the Eastbourne Airshow. These photos were taken on a pocket digital camera, a Nikon Coolpix L25, so unfortunately the quality of the photos is not as good as if I was using a larger digital camera. I intend to purchase a better quality digital SLR with a variety of lenses etc, if anyone has any recommendations for me, please feel free to comment. Anyway, onto the photos. The photos of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and Red Arrows are my favourites out of the photos I got. Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight - All 3 aircraft BBMF - Lancaster Chinook :- The Red Arrows :- The Red Arrows :- The Red Arrows :- The Red Arrows :- I didn't get any photos of the Typhoon unfortunately and the Sea King and Lynx AH-7 cancelled their displays and didn't show, which annoyed me no end. Several of the other displays were only watched by me rather than photographed as I was walking around the trade stalls etc at the time they were on. Full album is available on Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.199430156890707.1073741836.100004711722357&type=1&l=3d34ba4505 Thanks for looking, I hope you like the photos even though they are not of the quality most photos on here are. Cheers, Rick
  13. Heres my build of the reissue of the old Airfix Chipmunk, very much an impulse buy this one, went into a little model shop i found and i felt rude not buying anything so i ended up with this. Although an old mold it is still a lovely little kit all round and does go together nicely, the only downside is that it is abit basic in the cockpit but you expect that from an old mold. Rather pleased with this one specially the stripes which i masked bar the tail stripe that i painted free hand. Tempted to get another so i can have both the BBMF Chipmunk :ha: Enjoy, Tom
