Now, I would like to present my second finished Hawk. It is XX193 and the reason for that choice is a nostalgic memory from the airshow CIAF 97 Hradec Králové, Czech Republic. I saw there this plane personally and as needy student I spent quite lot of money to take a colour picture on 35mm film and make paper photo. It is included bellow. Unfortunatelly, during finding some sources I read that there was tragic accident during low altitude dogfight excercise in 1999. Both pilots were killed. The link with some background is HERE

I started the build from Red Arrows Airfix box and intended to do a black Hawk XX-193. During the initial work I realised that Airfix produces two different sprues and kits of BAe Hawk. From the Red Arrows box is only possible to build the Hawk of that acrobatic group. The kit hasn´t the gunsight and is generally simplified and cheaper. The canopy is one piece, there are a minor differences in panel lines, the wing is moulded together with aerodynamic fences. The fitting and building of this kit version is surprisingly slightly better than the other kit. Unfortunately I don´t understand why there is missing the rear part with tubes for making coloured vapour trails. Generally as I wrote in my building thread, I am quite disappointed with overall quality of all the Airfix kits. At the end I build both kits. The Red Arrow and the other in black. (Later I will also post it into the gallery). The choice of the camouflage of Red Arrows was not easy as one man could expect. The planes were time to time a slightly different in marking. Finally I was interesting in the Hawk XX179. I found that the XX179 flew first female pilot Flt. Lt. Kirsty Moore at the Cotswold Airshow 2011 under formation no.5. Unfortunately I was not able to collect exact time sequence of her career. In some time period she was named Kirsty Steward and then also Kirsty Murphy as she got married with former Red Arrows squadron leader Ben Murphy. Unfortunately the career of Kirsty in Red Arrows team was ended due to certain psychological aspects as there were two serious accidents with pilots dead. In the first one in august 2011 near Bournemouth air base the Hawk XX-179 was completely destroyed.

And now for something completely different... For my 70th Birthday my sister gave me an Airfix Starter Set Red Arrows Hawk, one of 7 presents each to highlight a stage in my life! Yesterday I made the kit.... Here it is, ready for inspection.... Building it took all of 3 hours, painting and applying transfers another 2. These kits are designed to be simple to build, few parts but beautifully moulded and the detail is good. The instructions are brilliantly clear and simple, perfect for a beginner. The kits are supplied with paint... Airfix acrylic and the red and white had started to set. I used Tamiya red and white. The hardest part was applying the transfers, very thin and lining up the white stripe was difficult as it is in 3 parts, plus the fin flash in 2 more. With Hindsight I'd have started at the fin and worked forward. Anyway, a trip back to 1962 when kits were simple and built as soon as we got them home. I've not had so much fun building a kit in years, big "Thanks" to Sister Sue!

Hi all, I will be contributing to this GB with Y Ddraig Goch (A Welsh Dragon). This will be a black aircraft with a dragon on each side of the fuselage courtesy of the Eurodecals sheet. I intend to have this flying on a stand so should be a relatively quick build. I was tempted by some PJ productions pilots but have located some volunteers from an Airfix Jet provost which should look the part. In terms of the finish I might be tempted to break my duck with Alclad gloss black! We will see. Any idea if I can spray this over acrylic primer or will it be too ‘hot’. Cheers Ash

Hi, I just finished this 1/72 Airfix Hawk T.1. I used Eduard photo-etched and CMK resin parts. Tamiya paints and Future were used for the finish. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

After successfully clearing several models from the shelf of doom I thought I would indulge myself with a simple quick build of a kit from deep in the stash. No fancy stuff, just making use of the paints I have to hand (so no stressing that something is not quite the right shade of grey). I settled on the Airfix 1/48 scale BAe Hawk T1, which I have had hanging around since 2005 (which is I think the year it was released?). Box was long gone (dissolved when a bit of a flood caused issues in the back shed in our old place in Geelong). I completed it as XX164 of 4FTS, RAF Valley in around 1990 (using decals from Xtradecal Sheet X48-027). Sadly this aircraft was written off in a fatal crash a few years later. Build thread here. Real mixture of paints: White from a Tamiya rattle can, Tamiya (red and blue) and Italeri (Light Aircraft Gray) brushed acrylics. Finished with Italeri Semi-gloss Acryl varnish. Thanks for looking.

After successfully clearing several models from the shelf of doom I thought I would indulge myself with a simple quick build of a kit from deep in the stash. Aim here is to see how far I get in the long weekend (Australia Day on Monday ), No fancy stuff, just making use of the paints I have to hand (so no stressing that something is not quite the right shade of grey). I settled on the Airfix 1/48 scale BAe Hawk T1, which I have had hanging around since 2005 (which is I think the year it was released?). Box was long gone (dissolved when a bit of a flood caused issues in the back shed in our old place in Geelong). I am planning to complete it as XX164 of 4FTS, RAF Valley in around 1990 (using decals from Xtradecal Sheet X48-027). A good photo of this aircraft can be seen here. Sadly this aircraft was written off in a fatal crash a few years later. So off to work, plastic is soft and easy to work with, although the sprue gates are a bit hefty. Very quickly started to glue bits and pieces together. First screw-up - I forgot to cut the flaps off before gluing the wings . Bit awkward, but managed it (thank heavens for soft plastic). First lot of painting. Using Tamiya Acrylic XF66 Light Grey for the cockpit and Italeri Acrylic Light Gull Grey for the landing gear and forward wheel wells. Time to stop for a spot of lunch.

Yet another from the shelf of doom. This one almost didn't make it. Picked it up at a swap and sell for A$5 - and now I know why it was going out at that price. Pretty much only fitted in a few places, just about the worst, cloudy, ill-fitting canopy I have ever come across. Used a humungous amount of filler. It has languished ~90 % complete at the back of the shelf because I just couldn't face it, but over the last few nights I gritted my teeth and went for it. Brush painted as always with Tamiya acrylics and finished with a Humbrol Mattcote over a watercolour wash. Decals were rubbish, so I discarded them and used some from Xtradecal sheet X48-047 plus a few spares to finish her as XX195 from 63 Squadron, 1 TWU, RAF Brawdy in 1986. Definitely best viewed from a distance, the iPad photos are rather kind in that respect - I think I won :-) Thanks for looking.
