  1. Just finished this Airfix 1:72 Boeing B-17G 37-993 of 91st Bomb Group, 324 Bomb Squadron Eighth Air Force based at RAF Bassingbourn in Early 45. I started building this as the B17 Texas Raiders had just crashed it may not be Texas Raider but its my little tribute to them. With this one having quite a high bomb tally I've gone for a slightly more worn look then my usual builds. Build itself was really nice. The only issue being around the ball turret where something was out and didnt allow the fuelages halves to meet cleanly or the turret to rotate. No real addons to this just some scratch build ammo chutes for the waist 50cals and some hydraulic tank/pipes in the cockpit to fill a hole. Theres some nice pics of 43-37993 in flight and crew HERE at the American Air Museum in Britain site. Now to my build, as always comments suggestions, questions and tips always welcome and encouraged. (image use small print so nobody complains:- You can download good quality copies of the images on our site for your own personal use, or use in a non-commercial context. 2. ....so l could not resist this colour scheme! Airfix 1/72 kit built OOB, although internally l only built and painted the cockpit and navigator departments, a bit lazy but the other areas can't be seen once the fusalage sides are joined. I tried the SMS range of paints for the metallic side of things and was impressed, found they did need thinning although they claim you can spray straight from the bottle, drys quickly and is very robust, all other colours are Mr Color for the green, olive drab and yellow. Annoyingly l read too late in the build, a comment from @tomprobert in a review that the wing cheveron should be insignia Blue, bugger! So here is Milk Wagon,708th Bomb Squadron, 477th Bomb Group and a couple of pictures of Little Patches which l built a couple of years ago.
  3. Fellow Modellers.. i offer for your pleasure my latest USAAF Mighty 8th offering. Revell's 1:72 scale Little Miss Mischief, DF-F of the 91st Bomb Group based at RAF Bassingbourne, Cambs in early 1945 Built OOB with some unusual options - cupola and different rear gunners tail end.. Hataka and Mig paints used. I must say i found the supplied decals to be top notch with this kit. The plastic was a bit soft and fragile for some of the parts - notably the ball turret which i had to dispense with during final assembly. There was a lot of intricate masking for this. I did enjoy this aspect and had to redo some parts as they weren't in my opinion good enough. My next B17 is going to be the same Revell 1:72 kit but as "Nine-O-Nine". It's mostly OD so will get some practice in with the airbrush. I might be tempted to do this in enamels even! I'd like to dedicate this build to my Dad, Peter, who sadly passed on on October 13th this year aged 87. He taught me to make models as a child and followed my builds and loved the warbirds i've done during lockdown. I started this in September and just finished it now for RFI. Please feel free to ask any questions or suggest improvements. I did a little bit of research in to the engine exhaust patterns on the wings and the correct colouring and deposits on the superchargers. the Getty organisation has many excellent reference photos as well I always do a light weathering approach. I think it looks more realistic especially at this scale? I watched a great documentary called The Cold Blue about the 91st BG and the colour film shot over 15 hours by Hollywood director William Wyler. He flew 5 missions with the 91st to get the footage and it's been digitally restored to 4K. It's worth watching for some pointers in to the colouring and weathering of operational B17s from the models period. One of the cameramen was killed during the filming. I also respectfully offer this build in memory of the brave men of the 91st who didn't make it back. Next build may be something in a larger scale which i do find easier to handle the small parts in lol. Enjoy! Andy Some more Black and White 'period' views
  4. Another B17 started a fair few weeks ago. Just got round to posting something here. On the face of it this kit was rather nice looking so i thought i'd buy TWO and have a go at both to feed my USAAF hunger!. Having done a Liberator earlier on in the year and a few Tamiya 1:48 USAAF offerings this would be my next essay. I'm planning on doing it OOB. Little Miss Mischief is the one i will do. I have another same kit in the stash so maybe something exotic.. Deffo NOT Memphis Belle.. again. I've been watching the Sky Documentary "Cold Blue" which is pretty amazing to get some inspiration. as it's about the 91st BG. I found the plastic in this kit a bit soft unlike Tamiya kits which are a lot harder and can take a decent sanding and polish.. Maybe it's just the example of the kit i got sent? Anyway Here's some pics Saw some close ups taken at an airshow of the superchargers this pic doesn't really show the nice mix of sooty black and rust.. I loved doing the little maps and documents on the working tables! pity you wont see them but i enjoyed making this little personalised touch! This is the first time i've used the Tamiya Panel liner in Black and some nice results. I'm rather proud of the effect on the engine cyclinders There are a couple of options in the instructions which im confused about. two different tails and a cupola in place of the ball turret?
  5. Hi, Something bigger - Boeing B17, Flying Fortress. I have two of them, both are from Academy kit. A bit upgrated - I added some structural elements in wheel bays and I opened inlets below leading eges. There are: 1. B17 D , Fortress I in RAF markings, Squadron 90, based in Polbrook, UK in 1941. Here I used decals by Propagteam. Recently Italeri is producing similar or the same markings with re-packed Academy kit. 2. B 17 G in USAAF, "D-day Doll" 43-37544 of 447th Bomber Group (here one can read about her: http://www.447bg.com/43-37544.htm). So, the RAF Fortress I: And B17 G: All nose art are home made (hand painted on transparent decals). NMF on B17 - Humbrol 191 & 191+drops of others (11,56,33...), brush Comments welcome Regards Jerzy-Wojtek
