  1. Hello Everyone … I know this a real long-shot but here goes. I was talking to a friend and fellow modeler recently about B-17’s. The subject came up as to which ones we would like to build. Outside of the obvious B-17G’s I know there are at least 3+ B-17F’s and a B-17D & E I’d like to do someday. Unfortunately here is where my problem comes in. When I upgraded my phone last year. I lost 30,000 photo’s in my storage files. I lost the photo’s of the specific B-17F I really want to do. My only hope is to describe it and hope that somebody here has a lucky shot of finding the info/photo’s. The B-17 in question I believe was still in OD/NG camouflage. Im pretty certain it was 8th AF, but freely admit I could be wrong. The photo was of the starboard cheek and nose-art. The nose-art consisted of a Skull wearing a top hat. Along with a name above that in what appeared to be black. I think that was the only art but could be wrong. Any other info regards serial # and codes, squadron, and location would be most gratefully received. Dennis
  2. I’ve wanted to build an accurate model of a specific B-17F for some time and have been trying to collect references on and off for a while now. Instead of all this piecemeal, not particularly scholarly, information, is there a better way? Is there a proper reference volume for the production block variations and field modifications within the B-17F model? I’ve found the “B-17 Production” series by David Gansz, but as far as I know the three volumes only cover the B-17G. Specifically I’m looking for references pertinent to B-17F-35-VE s/n 42-5944. Info from various online sources (which are obviously copied-n-pasted across sources) show: “Delivered Long Beach 28/5/43; Tinker 5/6/43; Presque Is 15/6/43; Orlando 9/7/43; Patterson 19/7/43; Assigned 419BS/301BG Cerignola 16/12/43; Lucera 1/2/44; {46m} Missing in Action Blechhammer 30/6/44 with Chas Dodrill, (10 Returned to Duty); ditched Vis Is, all survive.” I have found no other references or pictures of the specific aircraft, although I have collected some good images and information of other 301BG aircraft and operations. My reason for building this particular aircraft is that years ago I acquired a grouping from the estate of Captain Charles Dodrill. In my collection of WWII uniforms I have his flight jacket, flight suit, field jacket, and other small items related to his time in the 15th Air Force. I’d like to make a model of the plane to display alongside his flight gear.
  3. Hello everyone, here's my finished B-17F "Memphis Belle" in 1/72 by Revell: This is a great value model kit and the detail is impressive OOB. I did scratch build some oxygen tanks for the upper turret and ammo boxes/consoles for the bombardiers/navigators section and added cables to the landing gear but other than that, built as is. As ever, I try and learn new things each time I tackle a new kit and this one was no different! Some of the main fit issues with this kit are the perspex nose and clear parts for the side walls in the bombardier/navigator compartment and this time, rather than gluing and accepting the fit, I sanded and filled the parts and then buffed with lighter grades until the clear parts were clear again. It took a long time to get the finish around the nose but it was absolutely worth it, as to my eye, the perspex fits well without overstated joins/gaps and looks pretty good. I learnt NEVER to use Vallejo airbrush primer if there are ever any concerns around the plastic finish as you simply cannot sand this stuff - it just peels away. This also means you will see some imperfections in the paint finish from the photos as I had to accept the end result due to this, as it wasn't worth sanding it back to get it right. I also learnt how to use enamel washes on this one and how to blend oils on the flat cote with white spirit. Finally, had some great advice on here as to adding some colour to the flat cote to slightly change the contrast of paint. see the WIP for this: Anyway, hope you enjoy. Cheers, JB.
  4. Hi guys, I will build the 1/72 Revell B-17F. I will build it out of the box including one of the options. The option I chose is "the Shamrock Special" It is a plane from the 8th Air Force and belonged to the 401st Bomber Squadron that was attached to the 91st Bomber Group. Here are some pictures of what is in the box. The plane I chose. And I have already started the model this weekend at a SIG meeting from the IPMS. I have made the bombbay and placed it on the left fuselage halve. It is not much, but a start. Cheers,
  5. After the B-17G ( http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234933316-132-boeing-b-17g-flying-fortress-by-hk-models-released/), HK Models is to release a 1/32nd Boeing B-17E/F Flying Fortress kit - ref.01E05 Source: https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=1648375182078767&id=1375731456009809 CADs Test shot at Nürnberg Toy Fair. 6. So, a giant box arrived on my doorstep yesterday. Though it says B-17G it's something a tad bit different. This is my test shot copy of HK's forthcoming B-17F. I'll be building this one for an upcoming Model Aircraft article. I'll also be running the first WIP of sorts of this kit here for you. Though I can't show everything what I will do is highlight some of the features of the new kit as well as share some intermediary pics of progress here and there. I'm currently wrapping up the Dornier Do335A kit, and will be moving into this one throwing the full Eduard assortment at it (using as much of the G stuff that is common as possible). Please stay tuned! Many thanks to Neil Yan and HK Models and James Hatch and Large Scale Modeller for making this one possible!
  7. Hi Everyone, Here is my first completed build during my week off. This kit has to be one of my favourite builds of the year so far. It comes with decals with 2 different decal schemes for 2 different B-17s : The Memphis Bele and The Shamrock Special. I have chosen to build the kit as the Memphis Belle with the following details : B-17F-10-BO, serial 41-24485, DF-A, Memphis Belle, 8th Air Force, 91st Bomb Group, 324th Bomb Squadron, Bassingbourn, UK, May 1943 Anyway here are the photos : Thanks for looking. Comments are welcome. Rick
  8. Hi Everyone, This will be the WIP thread for my next build project, the Revell 1/72 scale B-17F Memphis Belle. This is likely to be a challenging kit as it is a skill level 5. There are 9 sprues of light grey plastic and 1 clear sprue. The total number of parts in this kit are 235. The decals for the kit are also fairly comprehensive. I have already washed the kit to make it ready for painting. I will be working on this in conjunction with my USS Ronald Reagan kit. Anyway here are the photos of the grey sprues. More photos to follow as soon as progress starts. Cheers, Rick
  9. Hello fellow modelers, I am looking for the colors of the nose art of a B-17F that crashed in the Netherlands, near the town of Zegveld, in february 1944. The plane was named San Antonio Rose, and the nose art depicts a girl with a lasso, which wraps around the two nose windows on the port side. I have a b/w picture... We are building a model of this particular B-17 for a memorial display on May 15-16, so any help regarding the colors would be greatly appreciated! Regards, René
