Hello there! It's been a while since I posted here something and that's because I've been at the Scouts summer camp. Three weeks in the countryside without electricity, tap water and walls around me. And without the plastic models! So I decided to grab this kit first as it laid on the top of the "Maybe" stack from the other time. I am very inspired by the @Moa build which is above: At first, I started with the tail, then moved straight for the cockpit and when the cockpit was curing, I worked on the wings. Current state is: fuselage halves glued together, tail parts ready to paint and wings ready for the Surfacer. Let's see the photos Have a nice day! Andrew

Consider the aspect of this chubby little fella. And consider that this was 1922, four years after WW1, and that for many, many years, biplane and even sporadic triplanes would populate the sky. Progress always finds reluctance. Another civil jewel from Avis. Good detail, very smart engineering, care taken on achieving small and less intrusive sprue gates -unlike some short-run kits that have thick gates-, thought put into the breakdown to avoid sinkholes, nice interior detail, attractive an unusual type, reasonably priced, surely a superb subject choice. These last releases by Avis are indeed remarkable upgrades on the short-run theme, and if it's true that they are not snap-together, the level of detail and care in the engineering and molding makes them the best so far I have build in that category. Needless to say the subjects are wonderful which for me makes for a complete modeling happiness package. The step-by-step build is here: And so here it is, a racing oddity that promised much but did live up to the expectations. Enclosed engine, retractable landing gear, monoplane, monocoque fuselage, all very advanced choices for 1922 no doubt, that unfortunately due to other problems was not to be the winner the designers and builders thought would be. In any case, who can resist the plumped charm of this eccentric aviation one-off? The kit needs some touches here and there, but it is a noble kit, and I had fun building it, not to mention looking at it! Well done Avis, for more! I would say: take it a bit further and please give us a piggy-like Vickers Vulcan*, or a De Havilland DH18 or 34**, or a Westland Limousine***. But if you want to stay in line with the current trend, I would take a Helmy Aerogypt**** any day! Well, it's official - I now have the inter-war civil aircraft bug, and next up is this little guy - Avis' 1/72nd Bristol Racer. 'What the heck is a 'Bristol Racer' I hear you cry? Well, wikipedia says The Bristol Type 72 Racer was a British racing monoplane designed by Wilfrid Thomas Reid and built by the Bristol Aeroplane Company at Filton, England. - and who am I to doubt them. More to the point, it looked like this: Who couldn't love that? Well, apparently the pilots who had to fly it because according to wiki it was terrible and scrapped just a couple of years after it was built. Still, it looks good, doesn't it? Anyway, thanks to Avis for making a kit of such an obscure piece of aviation history. Apparently they're only making 500 of these kits, but I've got one so let's hope I can actually finish it and make it look halfway decent when I do. It's difficult to recognize the future when it is in the present. As with other many cases in aviation history (and History at large), the American (Shelton) AG-4 Gyro Crusader arrived too soon. Eight years ago, attracted by its aspect, between futuristic and comic book, I made a scratch-built model of the AG-4 Gyro, thinking that there was no chance that any manufacturer would ever issue a kit of it. I am glad I was proven wrong, so others can enjoy the incredibly modern looks of this remarkable plane, created in 1933 and flown in 1935. My scratch of 10 years ago: Here a clip of its test flight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1xifECLKFc I will quote myself from that build of long ago -since this house policies preclude me from posting a link to my scratch-build, located somewhere else-: "The retro-futuristic look and curvaceous, graceful lines of the Shelton American Gyro Crusader whisper in your ear “streamlining” and “teardrop”. To anyone familiar with the Bauhaus school of design it wouldn’t be a surprise if this one would have come up from their workshops, but it didn’t. It is actually an American design –many of you already knew it, since the answer is in the question- that had the misfortune of seeing the light of day in the hard post-depression years. Nevertheless the one and only machine built attracted a lot of publicity, the attention of the general public and some remarkable personalities, Amelia Earhart among them. During its life the Crusader had some changes in its landing gear and props and also in the variety of images applied mainly to its nose. In some images its surfaces seem to appear without any inscriptions or images, though. A good reference is: "Crusader: The Story of the Shelton Flying Wing" by Alexander Roca." So we have now the Avis kit in what it came to be known as short run technology. It has, as we all know, its pros and cons. We get those models unlikely to be cater for by the industry giants at an -in general- reasonable price, and we have to deal with something that occupies our modeling skills in a perhaps more demanding and certainly less complacent manner, cleaning flash, refining parts, dealing with the lack of locating devices and some vague fit. So be it. Resealable bag, I like that: Parts' array: Masks included: Decals (will talk about them later): Transparencies. Fair, if not precisely crystalline: The limitations of the media, but nothing a modeller can't deal with...with some skill and patience: Some cleanup is ahead... Instructions, well printed, in good paper, with a few vague points: Transparencies cleaned, washed, given some floor polish: The coffee mesh in which all those parts, especially the very small ones, are washed after the cleanup. Do not lose them!: Parts cleaned up. And man do they need cleanup: Not the sharpest of molds: Again, the fixes seem easy enough: The engine fronts also need a serious cleanup. Not sure if they attempted here to represent the things behind the openings, or these are just plastic blobs. In any case I will open those up and simulate the engine inside:

Below is my completed 1/72 Avis RFB Fantrainer 400 in The Royal Thai Air Force colours. I thoroughly enjoyed building this kit, yes, it's a short run kit, but, with patience and plenty of dry runs, trimming and very little filling you can achieve a good result. This aircraft is a real tail sitter and you need to be creative as to where you put the required ballast, I use a product called RIPMAX and white glue to fix it in. Comments welcome ! Here is the etched brass fret included in the kit, I was unable to use the small aerials as they were way beyond my modelling skill and patience, any advice gratefully received on how to use them please, thank you.

After looking for something different for this GB, I came across this on that famous Lowestoft model suppliers website. I knew little about the British Arctic Air Route Expedition and set about trying to find out more. This led to me purchasing a copy of Dancing on Ice by Jeremy Scott, whose father J.M Scott was a member of the expedition team. The expedition took place between the war years, returning to Britain in 1932 and was one of the last great adventures into what was then uncharted territory. In my opinion the book is well worth a read.
