  1. This project continued with a theme of creating a display to include a piece of space memorabilia and a model or models that are directly related to it. The piece of memorabilia is a commemorative patch that celebrates NASA’s 60th Anniversary. The patch spent approximately a year aboard the ISS. It was flown up to the ISS aboard an Antares-Cygnus flight (NG10) & returned to earth aboard a Dragon Capsule (CRS-19). Antares Launch vehicle is a 1-144th Scale resin kit from New Ware (NW120). With a few modifications Dragon capsule is a 1-48th Scale Resin 3D print, I have “designed” and drawn using Fusion 360 I did post part of the build on the forum, but didn’t get around to uploading the last section, if you have an interest in sing the complete build log it can be seen here https://www.tsmodels.co.uk/space-models/antares-dragon/the-build

The piece of memorabilia is a commemorative patch that celebrates NASA’s 60th Anniversary. The patch spent approximately a year aboard the ISS. It was flown up to the ISS aboard an Antares-Cygnus flight (NG10) & returned to earth aboard a Dragon Capsule (CRS-19). The vehicles used to transport the patch to the ISS & back will be modelled using the following Antares Launch vehicle will be a 1-144th Scale resin kit from New Ware (NW120). Dragon capsule will be a 1-48th Scale Resin 3D print, I have “designed” and drawn using Fusion 360, and it will be produced by a 3D print service. Preparations for this project have been ongoing on & off since 2018 when the seller of the patches announced his plans and started taking orders. As the Falcon 9 project is nearing completion they have been kicked off again in earnest so that all of the "hardware" will be ready to go as soon as the F9 gets completed. The base kit for the Antares The kit as supplied The new ware kit was first produced in 2013 and was modelled on the vehicle as it was then. The NG-10 flight was in the November of 2018. Between these dates there were some changes to the launch vehicle and spacecraft 1. First stage In 2015 the first stage (100 series) was retired due to the unreliability and age of the AJ26 engines, the final nail in the coffin was the loss of the Orb 3 flight in 2014. These engines were 15 year old Russian NK33 engines (that had been purchased by Aerojet, refurbished, and renamed AJ26) The first stage was replaced with the 200 series, which in essence was a beefed up version of the 100 series, powered by a more modern Russian Engine, the RD181. 2. Cygnus Cargo spacecraft & Second stage Castor Engine The original standard Cygnus version was last flown on the ill-fated Orb 3 flight in November 2014 and replaced with the Cygnus Enhanced version. Over the intervening years the second stage Castor solid fuel engine was upgraded 3. Northrop Grumman acquiring Orbital ATK In June of 2018 Northrop bought out Orbital in a 9 billion dollar deal. The NG10 flight in November of that year marked the first flight of the vehicle by its new owner/operator To accurately reflect these changes the model will be modified as below 1. First stage The AJ-26 engine bells were heavily insulated with a pink coloured insulation. The current RD181 does not have this present. The only correction needed will be to remove some material from the engine bells that represents the insulation. 2. Cygnus Cargo spacecraft & Second stage Castor Engine The enhanced Cygnus is 2.5m longer than the standard version. The Second stage Castor solid rocket engine was also upgraded. Although the later engine is physically larger, and the Cygnus was lengthened by 2.5m both of these upgrades were accommodated by lengthening the payload fairing by 2.3m At 1-144th scale a 16mm long extension will need to be inserted in the payload fairing. Fortunately, whilst I was looking into these changes I was in close contact with Martin, the owner of Martins models. He very kindly cast me a resin part of the correct dimensions 3. Northrop Grumman acquiring Orbital ATK This change meant a relatively minor change in the vehicles livery, the Orbital logo being replaced by Northrop Grumman’s corporate logo. Again, I was fortunate with the timing of this as I was having a sheet of assorted decals printed for a model, I was working on at the time so a batch of various sized logos were added. I think I have got the main changes covered and looking at the three points laid out they look fairly insignificant, but it took a fair few hours of internet searches, head scratching, calculations and educated guesswork to get there. I had previously looked around for a capsule on the open market and had made an approach to Oli Braun of Buzz media labs who produces a range of Space X rocket kits. Nothing came to fruition, and I left the looking on the backburner. A couple of years down the line and armed with a bit of Fusion 360 knowhow coupled with google & you tube I decided to have a bash at drawing one up and having it printed. If I rewind time back to the early eighties when I was just about to leave school and I was messing about with my newly acquired ZX80 the younger me would have not imagined that the older me would have access to, the tools, and the knowledge to create 3d parametric models. Then with a couple of presses of a button, send (for that time an unimaginably huge) file to someone who could then turn that information into a physical object using a 3d printer. In this COVID era it appears that to travel you are required to print an extraordinary amount of paperwork to carry around, that is then totally ignored by the people that request it. So, whilst in quarantine the paper, and the enforced idle time were put to constructive use The capsule was drawn up as two separate elements When it was finished, I had a play around with it, and the different visual effects available in Fusion A couple of shots in a wireframe environment, and one of a very quick render with some colours added This part of the build should be relatively straightforward. Glue A to B and apply paint he said. I have gone for a 1-48th scale, and that measures up at approx. 81mm diameter at the base and around about 70mm tall, a nice healthy size. The paint application is where I will force myself to leave the comfort zone and for the first time attempt some creative weathering. Here is a shot of the recovered capsule and the look I would like to recreate, any pointers as to how I could do this would be gratefully accepted
  3. Wow this build have been a long time in the making, my original plan was for a 1/32nd or even bigger scale model of the 262, But they were a bit too expensive. Next it was to be something really unusual, then a fighter ace’s aircraft or Galland’s JV-44 aircraft, or…. I just couldn’t make up my mind! In the end I decided to build an Me-262 without jet engines! She is the first, the granddaddy/grandmother of them all and a fair bit of aviation history as well, aircraft V1 before she had her jets fitted. The model is by Antares and covers the Stage I & II variations of the aircraft, stage II being with her fitted with the BMW P.3302 engines. She’s a multimedia model mostly made up of resin (yes my 4thone in a row!). One-piece wings and solid cast fuselage. The rest of the bits are quite nicely cast though the resin is very hard and brittle as I unfortunately found out as I was looking at the fuselage/wing join……..as can be seen above with the plastic strip holding it all together!! These bits are used if you build the Stage II version. The U/C is white metal, which it needs, same with the prop and other small bit. No PE with this one. Decals are nice and simple and you get a spare canopy, always a lifesaver! Right there is one big issues with the model as can be seen below. There’s a bad-casting mismatch between the top and bottom bits of the fuselage. I had a talk to Marcelo from Antares about this, and unfortunately it was just the way it ended up being cast, the few remaining ones he had left were similar (it was an early casting by him and is long since out of production). I’ve done some checking and it’s very close in dimensions, I may just get away with re-filling and profiling, though if it bugs me I’ll just re-skin the bottom…and if it really bugs me I’ll cut the tail off and fit a Tamiya one! I was hoping it would be a fairly simple straight forward build…..guess I’ll have to wait for the next GB!

Model: Antares 1/48thMesserschmitt Me-262 V1 Paint: Model Master Metalizer Lacquer (Aluminium Buffing), Mr Hobby and Tamiya Acrylics, Rub’nBuff Silver Leaf Extras: Custom cast rear fuselage, CMK PE Instrument panel I built this as part of the Me-262 STGB using Antares 1/48thresin model. It should have been an OOB build and a simple straightforward build. Unfortunately there were issues with either the original casting or re-casting of the model that lead to issues with the main fuselage. This model is long out of production and after talking to the owner, it turns out the few remaining models have the same problem. Sorry these are not the best photos but basically the issue is where the two fuselage moulds meet, the top half has opened up and allowed the lower section to drop into it slightly during the re-casting process. Not a simple fix. I was left with either abandoning the project, try and reshape the affected sections (I did this with the front section, it wasn’t as bad as the rear), or remove the rear section and re-cast it. I did the latter. In the end it came out quite ok. Natural Metal Finishes (NMF) scare the out of me!!! This is the first one I’ve ever really attempted. I used just one paint for this, Model Master Metalizer Lacquer (Aluminium Buffing)and and played around with the effects you can achieve with it. I could find any real information on the actual finish of this aircraft so tried to go with a worked metal unfinished finish…if that makes sense. I just so loved the look of her without the jet pods, such a clean look, as someone mentioned she look just like a Swallow….or a Shark Swallow! Anyway do enjoy and thanks for looking. ….and finally “Alpha to Omega” (well not quite), it’s hard to believe there’s only 33 years difference between first flights of both of these aircraft (1941 and 1974)!
  5. Ok I’m the first to admit I am totally mad and this build will prove it! My work pattern has changed so I will have more time for models!!! So rather than signing up for more GB’s…or actually completing the ones I’ve signed up for on time I decided I needed a new long-term project. The Heinkel He-177Z was a long term project which I loved so instead of building the bigger one I have gone for this project which I had mentioned a few times. I love the look and it’s super cool, plus a nightfighter as well! I had received all the bits sometime ago but after a quick look at them I got very scared!! The reason for this is the add on bits from Unicraft!!! The parts may be a little bit basic which is to say they are basically lumps of resin and not much else! So the basis for the build will be Hasegawa’s 1/48th Arado Ar-234C-3 which will provide the body, interior and undercarriage, though it will probably end up providing a of other bits as well! The wings from Antares are nice and need little work to fit my build. The engines or turbo-props are barely recognisable as engine parts and as can be seen I have had to add sheet plastic to help build them up so they at least may be round in shape! They even come with an internal engine sections if I wanted to leave the engine covers open…or should I say a blob to match the rest of the engine blob! The new nose is….well more or less useless, as can be seen from the photo is much smaller than the canopy section. The mod kit is for the Hobby Craft Arado Ar-234 which is completely the wrong in the nose section compared to the Hasegawa model, it’s way too narrow! So I can either modify the clear section which is pretty well impossible or completely build a new nose section! Plus all the other bits in this mod kit are pretty well useless as well, I will have to use most of the kit parts for this build! I will either have to modify the resin bits I have or make a completely nose section, which at the moment looks to be the easiest path! So I have pretty well given myself a not so easy task for this build. Whether I complete this build or if it is destine for the box of doom is something to be decided as the build progresses. For a start I need to get these engines at least round in profile, hence the addition of card to the engine bodies and spinners. If I can get these sorted there may be a possibility this project will get going. Once the main bodies are round in profile I can work on the nose cones and props. Once these are done I can then start to work on how they will mount to the swept back wings, custom mounts will be needed for this. So this is going to be a crazily big project, nothing that will be completed in a couple of months for sure! Again I must be completely crazy to attempt this build, I had planned it for the WhatIf III GB, but given the work required it’s not possible in the time given. So this Christmas or next I’m not sure when it will be finished so welcome aboard on this crazy adventure. So welcome along for the ride, it will be bumpy and the driver will curse at regular intervals....oh and regular updates are not included!
