  1. Hello everyone 👋 It’s been a while since I suggested anything for a Group Build. I’m not sure if it has been done before, but I’m just floating the idea of an Arctic and Antarctic themed Group Build. Here they are, first the Antarctic; then Arctic Circle: Incorporating parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Canada, Alaska and Greenland. Am I missing any nation here? I’m a geographer; more than anything else on Earth these regions have always fascinated me. The extreme conditions, the history of humankind’s efforts to reach the poles. To travel across the Arctic and Antarctica. To set up bases, perform research in the most incredibly challenging conditions. Stories of bravery, of tragedy, of geopolitical strategic military planning and military/research base settlement, of trade routes, of climate and change. I thought this a good subject as it would encompass military, civil, commercial and research vehicles, aircraft, Icebreakers, Barques, figures in terms of explorers, structures in terms of settlements. Why not even indigenous flora and fauna? If someone would like to make a model of a Polar Bear; yes! By all means. In terms of civil aircraft my only limit would be that to just fly on a normal air corridor above the poles would not be enough; any aircraft would need to be directly linked to the Poles, by airbase, by regular deliveries to the poles, by a record attempt or research directly related to the poles, of walking and non walking polar cargo. I’m open to all (polite) suggestions, this idea certainly isn’t fully formed. If anyone would be interested in co-hosting, that would be most welcome! Get your parka and snowshoes on, let’s get chilly and brainstorm the Polar regions for a creative and inclusive Group Build. 🏔️ ☃️ Best regards TonyT ——————- Hello everyone, It may be too late but I’m going to try to make a list. I’m in hospital in the UK, happy to be here and being looked after very well. I’m on a few tablets that make me a little vague; if I forget to add you to the list please remind me here or my PM. Thank you for the really great response to this group build idea and many thanks to those that kept the plate spinning whilst I was unable to do it. 😊 👍 🤝 I am very behind with Direct messages, I apologise and thank you for writing them. 2. Morning Gals and Lads: Here comes the first one of this year (hopefully not the last). The good old Matchbox tooling of the Twin Otter depicting a Chilean machine operating from Antarctica circa 1985. I added the antennas, air scoop, wind screen wipers plus some safety ropes and struts for the skis. I leave you a few pictures: I hope you like it. Cheers Adrian
  3. Hi all. The Supermarine Walrus is proving to be a popular choice in this GB and I can see why. It's always been a favourite of mine, ever since my dad built the original Airfix version back in the early 60s. Unfortunately, there's no Walrus kit available in my preferred 1/100 scale. However all is not lost, as there is one available in my other passion - 1/200. Trumpeter produce a range of 1/200 naval aviation kits - I'm assuming as accessories for their aircraft carrier kits. I managed to get secondhand versions of all of them via KingKit. Each box contains 5 kits and they appear to be little gems. To be honest, I'd be happy to pay the £6 asking price for just one kit! The PE parts are rigging wires. I'll give them a try, but I'll probably end up using finer stretched sprue. The transparent parts have a mesmerising, ghost-like appearance and at some point I'd really like to build one of the kits unpainted. For this GB however, I've decided to go for the well known RAAF Antarctic aircraft HD874, which is currently on display at the RAAF Museum, Point Cook. Here's a link to the museum's info on the aircraft. Cheers, Cliff

  5. Recently finished the nice little Williams Brothers 1/72 Kit of the Northrop Gamma converted by Ellsworth for his (ultimately unsuccessful) Antarctic Expedition. It's a fairly simple kit which comes with various versions but, curiously, didn't include the skis which can be seen on the real plane in the Air & Space museum. However, after using few slabs of plasticard to make the leg spats I worked out that the "park bench" style ailerons which come with the kit (but aren't used on this version) were about the right size for the skis, once they'd been bent up a bit. Normally a dedicated foiler, I went with ratllecan chrome silver on this one, partly because there were a lot of compound curves which would have made foiling difficult but mostly because I was feeling lazy. It came together nicely in the end: https://www.flickr.com/photos/96171173@N05/albums/72157665960630706
