  3. First post of a build since joining. Bit of whim building this - the first kit from the stash that I grabbed after a 1 year break from the hobby. WiP on the KG144 forum. Comes as a bonus kit in the Lockheed XB-30 box. I'm also building the large bird at the moment. Anigrand also produce a 1:72 kit of this. XP-62 was basically a monster B-29 Superfort engine and eight 20mm Hispanos with a pilot and some wings. Oh and some contra-props. It was never actually tested properly because Curtiss-Wright were drafted into build additional P-47 Thunderbolts. The engine and cabin pressurisation systems were truculent and that really screwed the project from the start. It first flew in July 1943 but was scrapped in late-1943 after the contract was cancelled that September. Good kit - goes together well with no real vices and decent level of detail. Small argument with canopy, with some fairing in to do with Vallejo filler, but much better than a lot of kits of this scale that I've played with. Otherwise pretty sweet. Humbrol and Tamiya paints used. Markings were very unexciting on the real thing so just a few stars to contend with. It's a very, very ugly aircraft. But possibly one of the only ones built in this scale. Which is nice. A quick and painless build to ease me back into the hobby. Thanks for looking! Angus

  10. YEEEEEHAAAA it’s finally here, though it seems to have taken forever!! At one stage I was going to build the Arado Ar-234 P5 “Turbo-Prop” Nightfighter for this build but after seeing some of the parts I didn’t think I would be able to complete it in the time available (even though the build seems to be just falling together). Then I happened to see some amazing profiles by the artist Logan Hartke and I just fell in love with the ones of the B-51 Panther, which are based on the Martin XB-51. So after a couple of e-mails to him I had his blessing to use one of the photos as the basis for the build. Actually he was very excited to see someone actually try to bring this design to life. So the base of the build will be Anigrands XB-51! I had hoped to have had Collect-Aires 1/48th version (I will build one as soon as I can get one) as trust me it would have been an easier build than the Anigrand one….more later. The new nose and canopy(?) will be from an Italeri B-57G along with a couple of other bits supplied from it as well. Plus just to give myself a little bit more work a 1/72nd Master M61 Vulcan rotary cannon will be fitted to the weapons bay as per the Pave Gat program originally fitted to a couple B-57G’s in Vietnam in 1968. Finally she’ll be finished in RAAF colours for SEA operations around 1971. Work required; · Ok the Anigrand base model is horrible! All four sections of the fuselage were and still are warped, even a nice warm bath didn’t work, I think it made it worse! So lots of work there. · Main wheel well bays need to be rebuilt, are warped. · Completely new cockpit to be built. · Canopy will either be from the B-57 donor or a F-4E · Modernise the XB-51 airframe · Get carried away with any additional mods I always end up doing!!! Well I have my work cut out for this one……but am so excited I can’t wait!!! Oh the aircrafts full title is Martin B-51G Panther Tropic Moon III wt Pave Gat. The actual Tropic Moon III program started in 1967 as a result of operational requirements in Vietnam. Have managed to get the original de-classified documents for the program which is really cool and very helpful!
  11. As if I didn't have enough to do I've decided to do a quick.......sort of, project. This one has been on my mind since I saw a picture of another one in a similar scheme. But for mine it will be done as a RAAF close-air support version. The model is actually quite a simple one and for the most part everything is clean and quite well moulded. The fuselage isn’t warped though there were some minor issues with the tail, some filler and plastic plus elbow grease sorted that out quickly. The wings were ok apart from some bubbles in the tips and the inner leading edge has some moulding issues. Everything else just needed a cleanup....though the ejector seat is for the bin...way too small and dodgy! All the main bits go together quickly and will need only just a wee bit of filler. The cockpit interior is pretty much hidden once the canopy is on so I won’t be spending too much time on that! As much as I said it will be a simple quick build I am thinking of a couple of modes, have found a avionics “hump” from a Skyhawk and am thinking of modifying to fit. Late series avionics upgrade?? Plus the canopy I don’t like much, so any wondering if I can graft something else on?? Plus lots a weapons as well, these things had/were planned to have up 24 weapons stations/pylons!!!!! Anyway will see how the build progresses before I go too far.

  21. Just made a start on this kit, I did intend to build one for the group build but I ran out of time! The kit looks very nice and looks like it will be a lot less work than the C-17! The main problem with this kit is that despite what it says on the box, it's not a K.2! It is a mix of K.2 and C.1K. Although this kit will be built as a C.1K (XR808), I will point out along the way, the alterations needed for each version and the corrections needed for both. It never ceases to amaze me how Anigrand managed to cram such large aircraft kits into relatively tiny boxes! The kit appears to be based on the A A P Lloyd drawings and matches them very closely...... ..until you get to the nose and cockpit section! The resin is quite thick and very well moulded with only a couple of small air bubbles to fill on my example. There are large locating lugs that will aid positioning and strengthen the joints. The following is a correction needed for both versions. I made a start on the cockpit, it's not too difficult to correct, the outline looks accurate and only requiring a couple of cuts and a small amount of filling and filing. The section above the cut line was removed and raised to match the plans. The cockpit interior acted as a support for the upper section and aided the filling of the resulting gap in the nose section. With the upper nose section raised, the cockpit windows are now at the correct height but the line is wrong. To get the window line right and the roof outline correct, I removed the shaded areas The result is a much better outline and cockpit window position. The fuselage has been positioned off the drawing to compare with the outline. With the exception of extra detail work, as it stands, the fuselage is now correct for a K.2 More to follow tomorrow!

  24. I know, I'm mad but I've decided to add another Wessex to the GB! This one will be, hopefully, a Wessex HAS.3 similar to Humphrey fame although I shall probably do it in the pre-Falklands blue-grey and yellow livery. The fuselage has been glued together however there will need to be some considerable modifications to make this HC.2 into a HAS.3 The nose will need filing down to Mk.1 shape; then the large exhaust outlet holes will need to be filled; as will the window in the door. Following that, I shall scratchbuild a dorsal spine and radome, plus the 'upper lip' for the nose. Making a start on the nose by filing off the large intake cover. The nose has been attached and is ready to be worked on, to get the correct shape The nose has been filed to shape and the large exhaust opening has been filled. Tailplane also added. I won't need to make the cutout in the nose, or add the mesh as I did with the Mk.1 build, as this area will be covered by the 'upper lip' which is a recognisable part of the HAS.3 version The window in the door has been sealed, ready to be filled, as there is no window on the door of the HAS.3 I plan to give the model a covering of primer tomorrow, to check for any problems, and then will proceed onto the spine etc. Never done one before so that should be fun! cheers Mike
  25. Here is my (very) long term project, started some 3 years ago if I recall correctly. In that time I have not progressed far due to glaring shape issues and the desire to onpen it up and display some internal detail. Here is a box shot ..and here is a shot of how the model stands at the moment. My main short term aim is to get the interior complete so I can button it up and start on getting the external shape right. Then I can get to work on the main wheel wells and finally the engines. Some progress will follow shortly.
