  1. Good evening. I'm wondering: how loud is the Hawker Hunter compared with a Tornado flying at the same altitude? One is flying at the Wings and Wheels airshow at Shuttleworth on Sunday, so I really need to know as I have a phobia of loud noises (particularly low flying jet aircraft). Thank you in advance.
  2. Wonderland Models would like to say a big thank you to everyone who came to see us at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford. RIAT is always a highlight in the summer events calendar, and this year did not disappoint. It is always great to see so many familiar faces. We hope you all had a fun weekend at the show, and took advantage of some of our bargains while you were there. If you missed us at the show, don't worry, we still have many great sale items available on our online store, as well as our usual wide range of plastic model kits, diecast models and radio controlled toys.
  3. Bournemouth Air Festival is an annual event in the south of england as many of you may know. It has become increasingly popular over the past five years especially with 'holiday' makers especially when the sun is out. I thought i'd share with you a few snapshots of the two days I spent there: (images are saved on my deviantart.com account) Chinook HC.2 ZH777 (flew on this girl on my first cadet flight) Douglas Dakota of the RAF on her turn away from the beach. Westland Merlin of the RN, showing off the radars on her belly Westland Merlin slinging a precious load, the winchman was a bit cheeky on this occasion. Only eight appeared last year after one of the members welcomed a new baby girl into the world. Again, a broken diamond formation as only eight managed to turn up to the festival. A famous duo of the Battle of Britian memorial flight Victorious V-Bomber, Vulcan XH558 climbs out on her 'howling' engines. I hope you like them, any feedback, as long as it is not abusive (i hope) is welcome. enjoy
  4. Hi folks, I'm a bit scared of posting my efforts here but it seems worth sharing some images of unusual planes! We went to Wings over Wairarapa at the weekend, a grand day out in scorching heat, thankfully the winds were light enough that nearly all the WW1 aircraft were permitted to fly. Seeing the Fee in the air was a real treat: I took ~800 pics and whittled them down to about 50. The results are a bit soft and noisy, sorry about that. I'm not wild about the E-mount telephoto I have (Sony 55-210) - it had a hard time locking focus, and I didn't bring my reading glasses so I had a hard time locking manual focus! Tips would be appreciated btw - I tried pre-focussing where possible but found it hard to predict distances. I wonder if the autofocus was fooled by the heat - I saw a lot of heat shimmer once I'd got home and looked at things close-up, even apparently on some of the in-air shots. The other thing that bothers me is the skies seem way less detailed through the zoom - compare to the pic of the taxiing Spitfire (taken with the RX-100, which has a really contrasty lens) and I find it hard to recover this without messing with the colours. Anyway, here are some selections, click on anything to get to the Flickr set for the rest of them. The family enjoyed themselves too Cheers, Will
  5. Hi guys, I was wondering whether you could give me some advice on telephoto lenses. I've been attending 2-3 air shows a year for several years now and equipment wise I have a Nikon D3000 with a 55-200mm lens. I know it's not top notch gear, but not so bad either. I've been practising my tacking and shooting movements over the years (not just at the air shows) and I'm also getting better at waiting for the right moment. But I think the 200mm lens just isn't "big" enough to do a proper job. No matter how I try, there's always some blur/fuzziness and the colours are often a bit washed out except in the best of sunny conditions with the aircraft flying particularly low. I've had a look at 400mm lenses, but not only are they beyond my budget, they also seem to be quite heavy and require a tri- or monopod. Photography isn't really my main hobby and I'm under no illusion that I can match the results of the pros without lots more practise and much more expensive equipment. BUT, is there a suggestion how I can get somewhat better results with some moderate investment? Would a 55-300mm lens be noticeably better? That would be 50% mode focal length compared to my 200mm, but would it really matter "in the field"? Cheers Jeffrey
  6. Hi Everyone, My wife and I sepent a great day at Eastbourne Airshow yesterday, especially enjoying the Red Arrows, the BBMF and Canadian Lancaster, the Dakota, Typhoon and others. In the end I took 2770 photos throughout the entire day with my new Canon Eos 20D (which my dad has given me) with a very large lens on it which I was leant by Dad. Unfortunately, my dad didn't tell me how to zoom the lens which is of a completely different type than I have ever used before, so the photos did not come out as well as I had hoped because they weren't zoomed at all. I have used DSLRs with smaller lenses on them, but this lens had some kind of lock on it to stop the thing from sliding open on its own. I am deleting the majority of the photos as I don't need 2770 photos, I am going to edit them to make the best of them by cropping them down. I will post some of them over the next few days in this thread, however I will be going to Bournemouth at the end of the month as long as the weather is good, with the same camera and lens (which I have now been shown how to zoom, but I think the phrase is too little, too late). Anyway I will post the photos soon. Rick

  9. Hi mates, This year's show at Geneseo NY had much better weather than last year (when it rained pretty much all weekend). The show is put on by the 1941 Historical Aircraft Group from Geneseo, NY, which is just south of Rochester, NY. The show is dedicated to warbirds, and almost always with propellers! The landing strip is natural turf, and the setting is bucolic, nestled in the rolling farmlands of the upper Finger Lakes region. This year's show featured the return of the Lancaster, Spitfire, and Hurricane from the Canadians, along with many US warbirds. This was the first time I had seen a flying Avenger - at least that I can remember! I missed the show on Saturday, as I was returning from a camping trip. Then, I also missed Sunday morning's performances because of a localised disruption in the space-time continuum (i.e. I was late). Because of this, I missed the British warbird's flight demos, but I got a lot of photos on the ground and a friend donated some in-air shots from the morning. I did stay long enough to watch the Lancaster, Spit, and Hurri depart and got some photos of that. It started out very sunny, humid, and hot - it was 96 degrees F in the afternoon. Accordingly, thunderstorms were rolling in at the end of the show but luckily it didn't start raining until I was on my way home. Anyway, on with the pictures, who explain themselves better than I can! The Sukhoi was too fast for my fingers! I have a lot more photos, including some more that demonstrate my inability to get any good in-air shots during flight demos. The Lancaster! I believe this is the second flying example left in the world, and belongs to the Canadian Warplane Heritage from Hamilton, Ontario. The next shots are from my friend's cell phone, and magnified in defiance of all known laws of physics. This was during the flight display that I missed. The world's last flying example of the Curtiss C-46 Commando (Edit: NOT! Silly airshow announcer, filling me full of such drivel): The C-47 belongs to the 1941 Historical Aircraft Group, and is one that actually participated in the D-Day landings, delivering paratroopers. This year's show also had a couple of B-25 Mitchell bombers. And the more interesting markings of the two: We have the Devil on the starboard side: And an Angel on the port side. Georgie's Gal must have quite a split personality! Another shot of the Avenger: The Douglas A-26 restoration is coming along nicely. I hope they paint this baby black! As always, a large collection of T-6 Harvards/Texans: And a couple of Stearmans (note the Jaguar in the background!): The glider demo was so mesmerizing I forgot to turn the camera on while it was in the sky! Father and son Pitts Specials: These shots were from the end of the day when the planes were heading home - the thunderstorms are rolling in, the humidity was unbearable, and the telephoto shots were very foggy-looking. Add to that the fact that I'm a lousy photographer, and there you have it! Still beautifully clear to the east though: Heading towards the west: I didn't catch the ID on this one, Beech C-45 maybe? The Lancaster taxiing into position. Making the turn for take-off: Back to Hamilton, Ontario: One last fly-by before the turn for home: And a nice shot of the Lancaster against the sky to end the day! Other than the crazy heat, and my inability to get there in time to see the earlier flight displays, it was a fun day. Looking forward to next year's "Greatest Show on Turf!" Cheers, Bill
  10. Spent a very enjoyable day at Shoreham, on Saturday. Took loads of pics and here's a selection of the first batch that I've got sorted.

  14. Hi there I wanted to try something a little different with the photos I took at Fairford. While on holiday, I started to have a play around with Windows Moviemaker and used it to create an animated slideshow of my favourite pictures. The finished film - complete with AC/DC soundtrack (switch on your PC speakers!) - can be viewed on YouTube. Click on the link below: Or search on YouTube for RIAT 2012 rocks to AC/DC. All aerial shots were taken with a Nikon F4 300mm lens. For the first time I managed to get some crossover shots of the Breitling display team and the Red Arrows. Cheers Richard C
