  1. Su-27 Flanker-B Russian Knights (81776) 1:48 Hobby Boss via Creative Models Ltd The Su-27 and sibling Mig-29 were developed as a complementary pair of heavy and lighter fighters to combat the F-15 that was in development as the F-X at the time. It first flew in 1977, but encountered serious problems that resulted in some fairly spectacular crashes, some of which were fatal, but with persistence and successive rounds of improvements it came on strength with the Russian air force in 1985, but was still plagued with problems that prevented it from being seen in operational service for a further five years, and it is known as the Su-27S or Flanker B by the NATO countries. A navalised Flanker was also put into development, but that's a whole 'nother model. It proved to be a capable fighter, and after the fall of the Berlin wall, Russia continued its development, with other variants incorporating improvements, and wholesale conversions leading to other marks entirely, such as the SU-30, Su-33 and Su-34 with side-by-side pilot seating. The Flanker continues to impress the crowds at airshows thanks to the exploits of the Russian Knights and the Cobra manoeuvre that caused quite a stir when first seen. Sukhoi had a number of export successes, and China also manufactured Flankers under license as the Shengyang J-11 after an initial delivery of Russian built airframes. The Kit This is re-box with new decals of the 2016 kit from Hobby Boss and arrives in a large top opening box with a somewhat worn Russian Knights Flanker flying across the front. Inside you are greeted by a card insert with the two fuselage halves and their blended wings secured to it by coated wire, twisted around the nose, tail and wings. The nose and tail are further protected by a wrapping of thin foam, while the delicate parts of the wingtips are surrounded by a detachable sprue for good measure. Under the insert are fourteen more sprues of various sizes in the same grey styrene, two clear sprues, a small fret of what looks to be Photo-Etch (PE) stainless steel, or something similar. There are also three black "rubber" tyres, and a decal sheet plus of course the instruction booklet and a separate glossy page detailing the painting and decaling. The fuselage and wings strapped to the insert in the top of the box as a monolithic chunk of plastic is still impressive and has become the norm for kits of the Flanker family over the years, and having a look over it whilst perusing photos of the real thing, it seems to be ticking the boxes in terms of shape, although it's still tricky to be 100% about that when large parts of the airframe are still on the sprues. Construction starts with the cockpit, which is well detailed and has a multi-part seat, rudder pedals and control column, plus decals for all the main instrument panels. The instructions switch straight to building up the landing gear, as the nose gear is held in place by the addition of the gear bay to the lower fuselage, so they must have decided they might as well get you to build the main gear too. The gear legs are multi-part assemblies, and the nose leg has the characteristic slatted mud-guard and cluster of landing lights attached, the former in two parts that close around the nose wheel. The wheels are all two-part hubs with those black rubberised tyres, which have tread pattern moulded in, although no sidewall detail is present. The cockpit is installed from the underside in the upper fuselage, while the nose gear with the two exhaust trunks are placed in the lower half. The trunking is blanked off at the front by a simulated engine rear, and a slightly chunky-looking flame holder for the afterburner. That's it! The fuselage can go together, and if the dry-fit is anything to go by, there should be little if any clean-up to do. The leading-edge slats and flaps are separate, and adding them completes the wings, while the elevators fit to the rear at the side of the exhausts. The twin stabs have separate rudders and asymmetrical detail at the trailing edge, which is as it should be. You then have a choice of either open or constricted exhaust petals, which are both single parts per side. The rear section of the engine pods are moulded into the fuselage, but the forward section is separate, with a detailed roof, and a built-in FOD (Foreign Object Debris) screen blocking your view of the intake fan for the engines, which are supplied anyway. These fit onto ledges at the front of the fuselage-bound aft sections, with a cut-out over each main wheel bay, allowing you to fit the pre-prepared legs at this point if you wish. Each main gear bay has two doors, which have their actuator jacks included, as does the nose gear bay, with the smaller rear door captive to the trailing retraction jack. The nose cone is a single part, and has plenty of space for a nose weight if you think it will be necessary, although the instructions don't mention it. The canopy is also added at this stage, which is broken down into windscreen section with a clear hemisphere for the windscreen mounted sensor added as a separate part, and the canopy which has opening equipment depicted, as well as the PE rear-view mirrors. The canopy is correctly blown in front profile, which requires a three-part mould, so there is a seam on the top of the canopy that you will need to sand away and then polish back to clarity. Add a few probes and sensors, and that's the airframe built. Markings You get two Russian Knights markings options from the box, both of which have the bright red, white and blue stripes and yellow/blue sunburst on the fins. From the box you can build one of the following: The decals provide the more complex red stripes with the white accents that should permit a little leeway for painting of the base blue and white sections to complete the look. Careful measurement and masking, coupled with sparing application of paint to avoid visible lips under the decals should result in an impressive model. There are a trio of black & white photos on the rear of the instructions to assist, but there are a literal ton of photos on the internet if you should need them. If you are a stickler for detail, you might want to invest in some Su-27 Stencils from Begemot (48009(1)), as you can bank on those being comprehensive, and the instructions will be a little easier to follow without the national markings on the same diagram. Conclusion It’s a simple re-release in a new box with new decals, but the scheme will doubtless appeal to many. Detail is good, and the shape also seems to be too, although the true proof of the pudding will be in the building. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  2. Myself and my camera wandered down to the Avalon Airshow here in Victoria yesterday. Its a biannual airshow, and I usually try to attend on one of the trade days Shooting conditions are notoriously bad, with the harsh sun in your face, heat haze and lots of gunk in the air. Anyway, managed to capture these images. I'll hopefully have a few more to add after Thursday. I have also added a link to my full album Cheers Bruce and a link to the album here https://www.flickr.com/photos/131700029@N03/albums/72157678971013968
  3. Greetings all, Can anyone tell me either the dates of the Duxford airshow next july, or when they tend to announce? I'm trying to work out how many days of Riat to book and where I should look at hotels... Thanks!
  4. Hello! These are from last year, at the Edmonton Airshow were I live. The camera I used is a Nikon D7100 and the lens was a Tokina 150-600 mm. Thanks! Jorge
  5. Hi, One of those questions that will take a second for someone in the know to answer... RAF Typhoons seem to run a centre line tank for air shows, otherwise they are clean. Is this a CofG issue or is it more boring than that due to transit distances and loitering times?
  6. Evening all, Here's a selection of images from a terrific show at Duxford on Saturday. Arguably a finer line up than Legends, it was a truly superb way to see out my airshow season. Conditions were tricky for photography with flat light throughout most of the day, with the sun only making an appearance after the flying had ceased, as is so often the way! As a result, the images aren't the most exciting in the world, but hopefully of interest nevertheless. 7. So I got back to Southport today for another fantastic display. The light is very different to the evening show (see previous post) with some interesting photos. The only down side was that by the time Sally B was in the air the sun was in a difficult position, meaning I either got good pics of her in a left hand turn, or basically silhouettes. Therefore I decided to hold back a bit on those. Anyway, enjoy. Otto was much more sedate when everyone could see him. Barnstorming right down to the deck! Is this the new Ryan Air economy class? This is a nippy bugger, and hard to pin down. Mock dogfight. But all friends in the end. Thanks for looking.
  8. Morning all, Here's my selection of images from a fine show at Biggin on Sunday. It was mainly the Czech contingent that brought me back to Biggin for the first time since the last air fair in 2010, but overall I thought the show was excellent, with an decent blend of military and civilian acts. 9. Evening all, Thought I'd begin my coverage of RIAT with a selection of images from the two arrival days. Wednesday proved a frustrating affair with the switch to RWY 09, resulting in hazy approach shots, but the quality of trade up to that point more than made up for it. Thursday saw the usual West end frustrations, but again, it was a case of quality over quantity, though we were all incredibly grateful to ATC bringing the Flanker up our way after the initial communication difficulties! 13. Evening all, Thought I'd share some images from another terrific installment of Fly Navy. Last year's line up and weather was always going to be tough to beat, but in spite of the tricky conditions, the standard of flying was absolutely first rate, particularly from the Nimrods, Wildcat, Fury and surprisingly the Catalina. 14. Evening all, Here's a selection of images from what has been a busy bank holiday weekend, attending Duxford on Saturday and Bruntingthorpe yesterday. Duxford was something of a mixed bag in terms of participation, but what was good was very good, none more so than the Rafale, which was just about the finest fast jet demo I've seen. The magnificent Sea Vixen was displayed beautifully as ever, absolutely gutting to hear the news break as the show ended. I adore the jet and sincerely hope she can fly once again. 15. So i just got a Nikon D3300 and would like to do some (very) amateur airshow photography with it. I dont really have much money to spend and accept this is hardly enough to get a decent Lense but i was wondering if either of these lenses would work: Nikon 55-200mm VR - I know 200mm isn't widely considered enough, but with a crop sensor would it be enough for airshows at Duxford and Headcorn where the planes are fairly close? Sigma 70-300mm APO - I have heard the image quality is decent but the autofocus is a bit rubbish. has anyone had any success with this lense? I have looked at the Nikkor 55-300VR but i can't afford it really, as my max is about £130. If i really can't get ANYTHING good for that i may be able to stretch it a bit. Will
  16. 2016 was my first ever trip to the legendary airshow at Oshkosh, known as Airventure. Oh my it did not disappoint. Cannot wait to go back. I've no idea when that will be. But boy I'm looking forward to it. Here's the full gallery. https://www.flickr.com/photos/92554273@N07/albums/72157673601898586 The headquarters of EAA is also a museum. An amazing museum. Complete with authentic chunks of various B-17 and B-24 noses with nose art. It's eerie to think that at one point these pieces were once part of a larger plane, being crewed mostly by teenagers and literally fighting for their lives. Not something I can even begin to comprehend. 17. I was able to get my butt down to the EAA Airventure airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin this year. My first ever Airventure. My first airshow in many many years. And my first airshow since getting into photography. While there were numerous aircraft that caught my attention, this one I knew I had to get as many photos as I could. I should have shot more but there's just so much to see you can't really afford to linger in any one spot for too long. So why is this aircraft so interesting? Well, as I was walking past I couldn't help but notice that she looked like she was fresh from a factory in 1943. The owner noticed me and said that's actually a pretty accurate statement! The restoration had been completed only two weeks prior. And this restoration was as complete as humanly possible. This is exactly how the aircraft looked in 1943 when she was reassembled and made ready for operations in the PTO. As the owner said to me, Rosie the riveter was good, but we had the time to make her perfect. And boy is she ever perfect. The gun sight is fully functional. There's a gun camera complete with film! Enough talk. Here are a few photos with far more up on my flickr page. Thanks for looking. 20160731-MJS_8741 by _m_sinclair, on Flickr Another point of interest. This isn't just any P-40M that happened to be painted in these colours. This really is NZ3119! These are the same colours she wore way back in 1943. While this aircraft is not known to have scored any kills, the pilot of this aircraft did get a kill in his previous aircraft. 20160731-MJS_8520 by _m_sinclair, on Flickr 20160731-MJS_8530 by _m_sinclair, on Flickr 20160731-MJS_8559 by _m_sinclair, on Flickr 20160731-MJS_8561 by _m_sinclair, on Flickr Although he did not fly this particular P-40M, this aircraft was signed by the highest scoring ace in the RNZAF, Geoffrey B Fisken. 20160731-MJS_8548 by _m_sinclair, on Flickr The level of detail is jawdropping on this bird. Everything on this aircraft is as it was when it was new in 1943. The individual markings were not just copied in appearance. But they were applied was using the original technique. 20160731-MJS_8566 by _m_sinclair, on Flickr 20160731-MJS_8569 by _m_sinclair, on Flickr 20160731-MJS_8575 by _m_sinclair, on Flickr 20160731-MJS_8579 by _m_sinclair, on Flickr I had no idea P-40's had a cloth liner in the wheel wells. Wonder how long they actually lasted? 20160731-MJS_8581 by _m_sinclair, on Flickr I learned that along with keeping out FOD, there was a second purpose to taping the guns. It indicated to the pilot the guns were armed and ready to go. 20160731-MJS_8594 by _m_sinclair, on Flickr 20160731-MJS_8599 by _m_sinclair, on Flickr Nice chocks! 20160731-MJS_8617 by _m_sinclair, on Flickr If I ever get the chance, I will happily shoot far more detail shots of this magnificent warbird. 18. Hello all! So I am on a trip to Malta that I planned around their Airshow. Pretty much the only reason Malta came to my attention for a trip this year was that my last attempt to see the Polish Iskra team isn't Florennes, Belgium they cancelled. I wanted to visit Malta anyway - so made it a holiday. Thw he Airshow was actually cancelled on the 25th due to poor weather. I'm very glad I went on the 24rh where it was near perfect skies. There were not many attendees this year...but the main draws were the Polish TS-11 jet trainer display tea m "Bialo-Czerwone Iskry" and the Ukrainian Su-27. There were doubles, support aircraft, and a few extras in the static display - those photos will be added when I'm home later. Please enjoy. 20. Good evening all, I've been following some of the builds on this group build for a month or two and alas last night I decided to enter into it. So, here I am- my first group build! What am I building? Well, during the "black friday" sales the Airfix Gnats were on sale for about £2, so I got 4 of them! I have already completed one (as seen below) as "what-if" British Airways Gnat (Note: NOT PART OF THE GROUP BUILD!) On a more serious note, the relatively recent incident regarding Kevin Whyman and the Gnat Display Team has given me an idea of what to do with the other 3 Gnats: the red and white "striped" gnat and the yellow gnat on either side of my Avro Vulcan (hung from the ceiling) with Whyman's red arrows gnat ahead, nose up and soaring into the heavens. Things that I have noticed about the kit during my BA gnat build and a previous OOB build is that: A. The landing gear legs need to be fully secured before the gear bays are inserted into the fuselage B. The seats need to be painted before they are glued to the "back-walls" of the cockpit C. Pitot probe is sturdy but not invulnerable! D. The underside antennae can be damage easily, so be careful! -It is also worth pointing out that these gnats will be built with the undercarriage retracted so the gear bays aren't a critical feature. Cue the pictures!!!: Picture of the 4 Gnat kits (note the Vulcan mouse-mat, i'm a huge Vulcan fan ) British Airways Gnat (not part of the GB) British Airways Gnat (not part of the GB) The aforementioned Vulcan (done many years ago when I was entering into the hobby, painted with a grey that was too dark ) So, that's it for today! Thanks for stopping by Kind Regards, Sam

  23. Morning all, Thought I'd share a few images from a bittersweet day at Dawlish last weekend. What started out as an excellent day, especially when the epic Typhoon tore up the bay, soon turned to one of great sadness as the news from Shoreham filtered through. 24. Evening all, I've been rather quiet on here for a while now, as my modelling takes a back seat to my pursuit of 1:1 scale aircraft. July is always a hectic month for me, with the headlining shows all taking place within a few weeks of each other, so I've had very little spare time that hasn't involved watching aeroplanes, taking thousands of photos and subsequently ploughing through editing them. In truth, I've barely scratched the surface of many of the shows, but though I'd share a handful from the best few weeks of the year, starting with a the WW1 commemoration show at Old Warden at the start of the month. 25. Hi Everyone, Here are some of my photos from the Eastbourne airshow, I've tried to pick my favourites out of the almost 1,000 photos I took, but still this is going to be very photo heavy. If you want to view the full 135 photos, they are in an album on my facebook, linked here : https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.488656594634727.1073741851.100004711722357&type=1&l=0724244a56 Anyway lets kick off the photos, I hope you like them. I'm trying to persuade my missus to let me go to either Bournemouth or Shoreham airshow (preferably Bournemouth) this weekend. Chinook Jet Provost Breitling Wingwalkers Typhoon Spitfire MiG-15 Grob Tutor Bulldog Sea King Eastbourne's Tamar class Lifeboat (At High Speed) Hawk T.2 Blenheim Norwegian Vampires P-51 Mustang "Ferocious Frankie" Vulcan XH558 Dakota Patrouille Reva The Blades Red Arrows Anyway, thats all of the photos I'm going to post. You can view the rest on the facebook link at the top. These photos were all taken with a Canon EOS 20D DSLR body with a 100 - 400 mm canon lens stuck on the front of it. Boy was that heavy without a tripod, but made life easier when tracking the planes. They have all been edited to improve colour balance etc. Please let me know what you think. All the best, Rick
