  1. For a short period of time (79-81)Airfix kits were imported to the USA and marketed by AVA. In 1980 the operation was renamed "USAirfix" and new decals included to appeal to that market. The plastic content was straight off the Airfix production line. In 1981 General Mills bought up the entire Airfix Co.. Well, I got one as a "collateral purchase" in an auction, bundled with the kit I was after. It was indeed the old Airfix Douglas Boston inside the box, and an intriguing decal sheet. The paint instructions were for aluminium over all. The decals were the prewar "meatball" style and red striped rudder. Not much else. So we're talking about a Douglas Bomber DB7, the kind of thing the French and British purchasing teams would have been looking at on their emergency shopping trips. More reading revealed that the Douglas design team on the project was led by Jack Northrop, a name that appears regularly when a major advance in aviation development is happening. A truly remarkable guy. An all metal twin engined bomber on retractable tricycle undercarriage, and the design work started in 1936....! http://www.aviation-history.com/douglas/a20.html So I built it. I thought I should put up a little RFI due to the rarity of the kit and the Airfix historical context. The big external gun blisters on the sides of the front fuselage had to be removed, and the crew were converted to aircraft fitters. Covered in sticky backed Ali foil, which is my tendency. And I spent a while doing the glazing bars etc in strips of the foil. I'm afraid the Airfix transparencies offered very little help or information on this challenge! 🙄 It's an ancient kit, raised surface details, hinged control surfaces, retracting gear legs and fairly well nothing internal. But, it had to be done! 😋 Probably not that many bare metal Airfix Boston builds on here 🤭👍
  2. One of my friends is passionate about airplanes, especially WWII warbirds, but unfortunately he is not a modeller, so he asked me to build for him a Mustang for him. We choose the nice Airfix 1/48 kit and I built it OOB with just few scratchbuilt details in the cockpit. I'm quite happy with result even if not perfect. Hope he will like it anyway.... Enjoy pictures and welcome to any comment. Cheers Andy
  3. Another of the £4 Aldi starter kits I did a couple of years ago.. I rather liked this kit very tricky to get the spiral white line on the spinner. Anyway hope you all like this one too!
  4. This 1:24 scale Hawker Typhoon with metal landing gear, Yahu Instrument panel and masks produced on my Silhouette Cameo cutting machine Depicts R8781 SA-H from 486 (New Zealand) Sqn, RAF Tangmere December 1942. Set on a display base with a plaque that is signed by three WWII Hawker Typhoon pilots in 2017. It comes with a certificate of authenticity and also a book showing the whole build process. The signatories are: Flt Lt David INCE DFC Flt Lt Derek Lovell Flt Lt George Wood This model is being donated to the Hawker Typhoon Preservation Group (RB396) for a very special auction coming later this year: to help raise funds to ensure that RB396 is restored back to flight as the worlds only genuine MkIb Typhoon. Richard Spreckley Scale Modelling is proud and honored to support the project not only as the resident modeler but in being able to donate this one off Special Edition 1/1 to the auction. 5. This is my very first WIP. Decided on an OOB (with the exception of a set of 'Yahu' instruments) Airfix DE Havilland DH.82a Tiger Moth. I have plenty to learn, and a long way to go with my modelling skills but I'm sure ill improve as I go along, Now to this Kit. As you can see from the photos ive made a start. The cockpit is fairly basic (not as basic as revell 1/72 FW 190 ive just built which had a simple rectangular hole as a cockpit) with two seats two sticks, ill add some masking tape seat belts at a later stage. I was surprised to find that a certain amount of Surgery was needed on the fuselage half's, if you want the doors open it is necessary to cut and remove the molded in doors and also drill holes for attaching the alternative parts, this I found annoying as I would have thought it better to have molded open doors and then have alternative doors to fit closed if required, I wonder why Airfix went the route they did, I'm guessing tooling was cheaper? removing a good portion of the rear fuselage is also required at this stage, this is in order to fit the Anti-roll strake's fitted to this model, again why not do it the other way round? Whilst on the subject of cutting the doors out, I found it better to remove the rear doors in two pieces rather than try cut around an angle (see photos) I am a very ham fisted modeler! and rely a lot on filler, however due to the textured finish of the external surfaces of this model I'm having to take extra care. Now i have to go build up a Fiat Twin cam Cylinder head so more on the Tiger tomorrow. Steve
  6. The Boeing 727 was one of the best selling airliners from the early 60s until the end of production in 1984 with 1832 aircrafts produced. Some are still in service today. With so many airlines operating the 727 over the years, there is a great choice of liveries available. Airfix re-issued their 727-200 kit in 2010 and 2012 with nice decal sets printed by Cartograph and Revell re-issued their ancient 727-100 kit in early 2016 in the attractive Germania livery, done by Daco. I gues both kits don't need much introduction,as these have been available frequently over the years. Revell's 727 is probably the most accurate of the two,as they got the nose shape pretty much right and also some other details are better than on the Airfix kit. The wheels are a tad too big on the Revell kit, they are better done on the Airfix version. For my 727 I used the wheels from some Airfix 727 leftovers I found in my spares box. As the Airfix 727s nose shape is not the best,I decided to replace that part by the Daco windshield for the Boeing 737.It fits quite well on the 727 and improves the look significantly. The other thing I changed was the raised panellines on the wings, which I rescribed and I relocated the fence from the back to the leading edges by using plastic card. And I thined the engine exhausts by sanding them down from the inside. The plastic is too thick there. The fit of the Airfix 727 was pretty bad,the re-issues had some badly warped parts, esp.the wings and on one kit even the fuselage halves. The wings bent themselves even more after the halves had been glued together....I tried to correct them as good as possible but its still visible. On all kits I replaced the front gear doors with new ones created from plasticard in the correct size ,as on both Revell and Airfix, the doors are too short. The new decal sets are of great quality printingwise but the Iberia/Aerolineas Argentinas decal set has some serious mistakes. One piece of the aft decals had the blue reversed.Dark blue on the upper half, light blue on the lower part.Luckily I had the right colors to repaint those areas and correct that.Furthermore they forgot that the 727s door arrangement is different on the right side so the logos had to be cut off and relocated to the correct position. Being printed by Cartograph,I was surprised to find such inaccuracies.Even the Iberia set had mistakes which the instruction sheet oversaw as well. The worker was either in a hurry or a complete douchebag Revell's 727-100 is despite its age a nice little kit which is fun to build. It has no open windows, except the cockpit and no clear parts. So the windows need to be filled and replaced by decals. The very nice and detailed DACO decal set provides cockpit windows as well as cabin windows already printed on the cheatline. The sets providedes enough details to enhance the look of the finished model. On the Airfix kits I used decals from my extensive stash as well as from a detail set to further enhance the looks. Painted are all of them with Tamyia pure white from a spray can,Testors and Revell for the grey and metallic parts. It was a timeconsuming but fun project building those 4 727s simultaneously . Enjoy the pics...kitty has made a guest appearance as well.... Boeing delivery line Renton...
