  1. This is one of those do a bit, leave a bit builds. I have had the Airfix T11 Vampire and the Gnat in the 'box in the other room' where things wait until its ripening time. I started looking at the Gnat a while back and with the weather being against me spraying in a cold, very cold garage I need something modelmakery to do. These are it! I wasn't very accurate putting the Gnat together so she needed a smattering of Perfect Plastic Putty around the intakes although the fit of parts has been far better than I expected. Otherwise what a nice model, well done Airfix, doesn't even need a bucket load of nose weight. Unweighted with more stuff to go in before the CoG later. Nice. I will move on to the new JP3/4 Also nice Do not, I beg you expect Fritag levels of detail on these builds, when I visited Linton on Ouse with 493 sqn we were made to fly Chippys from either Dishforth or Driffold*, I was a kid and travelling by RAF bus to our Air Experience flight was exciting enough so I never did remember which. Those MT drivers... *I think it was Dishforth, by the way, tell you why in a bit. So, the JP4 (it says on the starter kit box) more very nice attractive 'New AIrfix' mouldings, lots more in the box than the old two bob bag on a hook in Woolworth's ever had. The bang seats three parts each already and to coin a phrase from the golden days of evening-time telly, "There's more!" the head boxes haven't been put in. Together it seems they account for most of the parts count from the elderly JP it replaced, wonderful. Now with head boxes added, complaints? Not a chance. They're brilliant in my book. Now we add the cockpit floor and centre console with the stick things Mr Friday @Fritag was accustomed to use. He had memories and knowledge I do not but am very pleased with what I do have in this Airfix offering, I understand Steve used the Fly offering for his JP4. He might have liked this one if he tried it. Overall, colour me ready to go with these, exciting prospects. Mine is the starter set with glue, a brush and coloured substances. Of course there are no 'options' in the box, this is it. With an initial look at that out of the way I am taking an early look at the Vampire T11. And for me it has to be said the Dream Machine, still in service when I was that kid who thought he'd be ideal for the RAF pilot's seat into the foreseen future but being replaced by the JP as I got into the ATC. This in my eyes is a thing of beauty and the kit saved me from having to seriously ignore the many pitfalls involved with attempting to convert a Sea Venom into a Vamp when it was released*. I mean, seriously... * I also had a Frog FB5 to use for some bits... Anyway, phew. I mean to say, even has intake ducts. Look even gun sights. And those are decent representations of those early Martin-Baker seats, I looked! The rest of the interior gets very close to hitting the spot too. Noice. Now the Vampire, even during it's service demise had a massive impact on me, because. Remember I had some uncertainty about the place we space cadets went to fly during that camp at Linton-on-0? We detrucked on a rain soaked morning airfield peri track and were marched through the dampness towards the airfield and Air Experience hut along a long, long line of out of service T11s, glistening in the rain. ("They said we'd have some fun if it stopped raining") They told us that the met call was for drying all day so we were staying there until. We did, it did, then we flew for our five, ten or fifteen minutes and went back to Linton to look at lines of bright new Jet Provosts. Noice. *I looked up where the Vamps were to be disposal-ed from and got completely lost but since it was home to many Maintenance Units during its service life I reckon on it being RAF Dishforth. No evidence available but...
