  1. This is the Airfix new tool 109E-4 in 72nd scale. Exhaust are a resin product from Quickboost, along with machined brass guns from Master. No swastikas were provided on the decal sheet, so only stencils and wing crosses were used. Remainder of the markings were from other sources, plus some home made decals for the JG 26 emblem (gothic 'S' on white shield). regards, Jack
  2. The final development of the ubiquitous Bf 109 was this K variant. It was fitted with a four-bladed propeller and with two underwing gun pods containing two 20 mm MG 151/20 each. It was undergoing tests when the US Forces captured this single aircraft, taking it back to Muroc Army Airfield (Edwards Air Force Base) for testing and analysis.
  3. Attention all Fleet Air Arm modellers, the new Airfix 1/72 Sea King HC.4 has just arrived in stock and is available to order now. The kit has decal options for 2 aircraft, 1. ZA314/WT of 848 NAS in 2011 in the basic Olive Drab colour scheme 2. ZF115/WV/R of 848 NAS in 2009 with the white stripe winter camouflage
  4. Hello All, Here's a new Airfix Wildcat with folded wings: Build thread here. Thanks for looking, Adrian
  5. Originally Ha 141, designed by Dr. Ing Vogt in 1937 as a private venture, the prototype first flew on 25 February 1938. The A series flew well, but the five BV 141B-0’s were plagued with various troubles. The B series first flew on 9 January 1941. These problems were solved with the development of the Argus As 820 power plant giving a maximum speed of 345mph, a vast improvement on the previous BMW engine. Although originally designed for a reconnaissance role, it was transformed into a torpedo carrying Maritime Patrol aircraft designated Bv 141B-05 and assigned to Küstenfliegergruppe 906.
  6. Merry Christmas everybody. I've just finished up one of my Battle of Britain GB entries, just a hair past the deadline (OK, two months). Yes, it's another 1/72 Airfix Spitfire, which you may be sick of seeing, but no one should ever tire of building. It is one of the most enjoyable kits to build of any I've attempted. The plane represents a Spitfire I flown by Ralph 'Titch' Havercroft serving with 92 Sqn during the Battle of Britain. Most of the build thread is here, but there's a little more here. And because I always enjoy it when people put a bonus build at the end, here it is next to a 303 Sqn Mk II from the same kit.
  7. Hello all, I came across an old Esci decal No.57(Whitley/Short Stirling). One of the schemes was for a 15th Squadron Stirling Mk I(J-LS). This aircraft showed a court jester with bombing mission markings. The aircraft codes are painted in white and I was wondering if they were correct or should they have been mid gray. Also, are there any pics in the internet of this aircraft? I googled but did was not lucky. My plan is to use them on an Airfix Stirling a friend gave me as a gift. It is already half built but should be good as a SOB. Yes, I am going "old school" all the way. Thanks for any help.
  8. Airfix's 1/24 scale De Havilland Mosquito FB.VI has arrived into stock, just in time for Christmas! https://www.wonderlandmodels.com/products/airfix124-de-havilland-mosquito-fbvi/
  9. Hello All, I bought the new Airfix Wildcat the other day from the model shop in Formby. I had dropped in to have a look, as model shops are a bit of a rarity these days, and bought something on the basis of "if you don't buy stuff from a shop, it can't stay open for you to look around". When I finished my Airfix Gnat, this kit was sitting on top of my modelling box, so I started it instead of picking up one of my long term projects. You know how it is... Now I know that Stew has been showing a Wildcat here as part of his DFD build, but I think I can sneak this in before he resumes his build. Get well soon Stew! The cockpit is a little gem in itself. I painted it in Humbrol 102 with a dark grey wash. I have some Humbrol 226 but I couldn't find it at the time and prefer the 102 anyway. The instrument panel decal looks more realistic after I gave it a dark wash too to tone down the bright white dials. I added some tape-and-fuse-wire seatbelts and a throttle, and replaced the gun sight glass with transparent plastic (later in the build). The engine comes up nicely too, although I had some issues with the propeller shaft: This not-rectangular window is my second short shot out of the two last kits I have picked up. Quality control, Mr Hornby!! I left the windows out and added them later using a film of Clearfix. Back to happy thoughts. The fuselage joined up without needing any filler at all, and it just needed a slight touch up to the scribing to carry it under the fuselage: I did do a bit of fettling though, just to ease off the stub wing attachment: Airfix have you bury the prop shaft in the engine, then add the propeller later on. I can see why they do this, but it doesn't make for a freely spinning propeller. In this case I drilled out the back of the engine, took out the kit part and replaced it all with a longer shaft running though an additional bearing at the back. Propeller blows round like a dream now! I also added some faked-up auxiliary equipment at the back of the engine and a tank (oil? petrol??) at the top of the fuselage. You can't really see either in the finished model, so it was a good call by Airfix to leave them out: I had bought the recommended Humbrols 125 and 129 in the old-style acrylic pots. The 129 tin was half empty and very thick, but usable if diluted suitably, and the 125 was a blue-black half-empty gloopy mess which went straight into the bin. More quality control issues... I used the Humbrol 129 underneath and mixed my own topside blue-grey from a mix of Humbrol 64 (aircraft grey) and 96 (RAF blue). I made several batches and the slight differences help to break up the surface. From there it proceeded disconcertingly quickly to the finish. Here it is with decals on (I use Humbrol Decalfix directly over paint) and the weathering started: I had a pile of fun making this kit, much more than I anticipated. The folded wing option is well engineered (although that lovely rib detail at the end of the stub wings is all but hidden) and the whole kit more of less falls together, even the undercarriage! Finished pictures in RFI. Thanks for looking, Adrian
  10. Afternoon Everyone, Had this kit built since Jan but has taken me until now to paint and decal it. First time using primer, airbrushing, Humbrol acrylics, tamiya tape, micro sol and set (Never even knew these things existed until stumbling across this site last summer) Previous models were bashed out in a weekend using pots of Humbrol Enamel that I'm pretty sure I've had knocking around since I was about 6, so this was quite a learning curve. I'm sure there are lots of mistakes, joins in the plastic are pretty obvious but I'll get round to learning how to fill, sand and re-scribe at some point. All in all really enjoyed it, and pretty pleased with the outcome. Thanks for looking Pete
  11. Hi all, After some good feedback on my first build since a child I'm starting work on my second model and thought I'd post the progress here as I can see a few challenges ahead. Moved from a skill 1 to a skill 2 so expecting some new things will be learned along the way. Already looking forward to starting more builds after this one Bitten by the bug once again Anyhow .... on with the show. Quick parts review and obligatory red wine Quite a few bits need cleaning up, so this will be a good excercise in preparation. I will be taking my time on these bits so I don't overdo it. I attempted to weather the cockpit floor and this is the result ... not bad for a first foray into the "weathered" look. The picture of the tidied up floor is blurred so this is the "almost" finished floor. And here's the cockpit / engine assemby ready to go into the fuselage So far it's been pretty smooth sailing ... if there's anything you chaps can see that's glaringly obviously wrong please let me know. I'm open to critisism / suggestions while I work on this second build. Thanks for looking
  12. Hi all, Had bit of a quiet time on the modelling front this year, was getting a bit tired of trying to detail 1/48 kits so decided to go old skool for a bit of fun and build a classic old 1/72 Airfix kit. I bagged a Wellington on ebay and this has been the most enjoyable kit i've built in ages, which I guess is the point of the hobby! Put a tiny bit of detail in the cockpit and did a bit of weathering, only downside was the decals, very fragile and one of the codes broke up - (the letter K if anybody has a spare!). Anyway, here she is, got the bug for Bomber Command now... And finally, the wonderful box art!
  13. I picked this up at Telford with the view of adding something of a rarity to the bomber Command Sig display. At £47 it certainly aint cheap, but I'm more than pleased with what you get in the box. It's designed to use the Airfix B.II kit as a donor and having a review kit spare, this is what will be used. I've taken some pictures below of what's in the box. Quality of the moulding is superb and from speaking to Glenn at Blackbird who is planning to follow up with a Manchester conversion and possibly more from the Bomber Command armoury, the future is looking quite promising where some of the gaps that the absence of Paragon designs has created. The only issues I have observed is that you only appear to get the earlier H2S radome which is the same as found on the Lanc and already available in the B.II kit. Many Lincolns were later equipped with a Mk.IV H2S set which was noticeable because of the dome being much larger so it would of been good to get this part included to provide all options. If you want to do an aircraft with the 20mm cannon turret, you will have to scratch build the two cannon as they aren't included either although the clear part is. As I've not yet decided on the aircraft I'm not sure if the lack of Mk.IV H2S will be an issue. So, some pictures of the resin: This part is for the Australian Mk.31 with the longer, uglier nose! Resin clear pieces - much better than vac form parts once dipped in Kleer As usual, I'll be learning about the Lincoln along the way, so looking for guidance and inspiration from the experts out there! I read the Warpaint booklet recently to get more familiar before I start. I quite fancy doing RF476 which fortunately uses the earlier H2S as it had an interesting combat record as demonstrated from its bomb tally on the nose, but I haven't seen any decals for it. If anyone knows of any, please let me know. Thanks
  14. Hi folks, Here is a sea hurricane made from Airfix's recent 1/48 hurricane. It is finished in the markings of 'Dicky Cork' of 880 Sqn onboard HMS Indomitable around the time of the invasion of Madagascar (5-7 May 1942). The kit was finished with Xtracrylix, Vallejo products and decals from the spares box. I really enjoyed this build and it went together really well. It will be interesting to see what markings Airfix release the sea hurricane with when they get round to it. Cheers Nick

  16. Hello All, Just finished this one at the weekend. I used Revell Fluorescent Orange and Silver (both acrylic and brushed) over a rattle can white acrylic undercoat. The orange looks more like luminous pink in real life and the camera struggles to photograph it well. A very nice kit that only took a few sessions to build and paint. High point: the cockpit hood; low point: the pitot tube moulded onto the port fin, which finally broke off during decalling... Thanks for looking, Adrian
  17. I've had a lengthy break whilst family matters have taken precedence. Sadly they are still on-going, but a brief pause in other demands let me have some time to model this evening. The enforced pause has dented my enthusiasm for my group build models, so the Churchill, P38 and 2CV remain incomplete. However, the fact that yesterday marked the 75th anniversary of 85 Squadron's withdrawal from France, prompted me to tackle one of the Hurricane stash. I still have two sitting waiting for metal wing conversion for the BoB group build, so this was a chance for another practice run using the fabric wing kit as it comes (more or less).
  18. Hello All, I've been running on with a silver-and-orange theme and built the Airfix Gnat, purchased from Airfix on Black Friday for the princely sum of £1.99. It's a nice kit - nowhere near as sharp as the Vampire, for example, but it goes together easily and I didn't have any problems with gaps, although I did do some precautionary paring down of the intake blanking plates. A sparse building thread is here. I built a fun stand out of balsa, cotton wool and a bit of coat hanger. I'm not sure the blue-sky-and-fluffy-clouds setting is right for the dour '60s, but my daughter likes it. Anyway, pictures: Thanks for looking, Adrian
  19. Hi guys, Before I bought the Airfix Hurricane "Ragwing" kit that also includes Belgian markings I had already bought the Kora Models decals. There are significant differences in colour, proportions and dimensions. What are your opinions as to which does resemble the originals best? Cheers, Erik.
  20. Hi everyone, Looking at the kits to hand, I was thinking of just a straightforward build of this little fella...How neat is that wee sprue! But then I thought, nah..why not go all in with something involving a bit more head-wrecking plastic cutting. Having recently finished a Tornado, I thought I'd give one another go but this time adding some bits from the kit below... I know there's already another RN Tornado underway here (looks cool) and this probably isn't the most original idea but thought I'd give this one the fixed wings and smaller twin tails from the Hornet. I like the idea of an asymetric loadout too so that might get the nod as well. Bodging (and backstory) starts tomorrow night! Cheers, Dermot
  21. Hello All, I was "persuaded" by the recent Airfix sale to buy the Gnat for £1.99, seeing as how I am on a silver and orange theme after making the Vampire. The Gnat is a simple kit, very old school, but not nearly up to the sharpness and quality of the Vampire. It is much more "blobby" in the detailing. You can see I was tempted to start it a bit before taking the photo: I had already decided on a wheels up version because I think the doors give it a really ungainly look on the ground. That's just as well because part 21B (nosewheel leg) is a short shot, losing the nose wheel mounting: The cockpit is nice with good instrument decals, and there is some side wall detail moulded in to the sides. I used Hu 106 Ocean Grey: So I needed to put some effort into pilots for a flying model. The pupil is going to be steering and the instructor is going to be looking around: Although the two pilots have the same poses and details, they are different in quality; the "instructor" face moulding lacked definition so I gave him a big 'tache for character. The Airframe assembles quickly: Strangely the tailplane assembles with significant dihedral. All my references and the kit instructions show none, so I bent it all down flat. I have read that this kit has fit problems around the intakes. I didn't find any, nor did I find significant gaps. Mind you, I've got into the habit of easing all joints with a little scraping or sanding during dry fitting, whether they need it or not! It being Sunday evening and the time to make rash mistakes, I thought I would try to paint it without an undercoat. The orange is a good deal less intense over grey than over white (Note I forgot to leave a white disk to back the roundels): However, the silver would not go down smoothly over the bare plastic and orange overpainting, and would not sand down nicely without an undercoat: So I have stripped it back to bare plastic on the outside, rescribed to get most of the paint out of the engraved detail, and will give it a white undercoat next. More haste, less speed! Back to the orange coat (with masking for the roundels) tonight... Thanks for looking, Adrian
  22. Greetings folks, Last of what I can term my shelf of doom builds. Sadly this one is somewhat worse for wear for its time on the shelf of doom, owing to the fact that is departed said shelf on at least one occasion, doing damage to many of the sticky out bits. That being because this has stood on the shelf of doom awaiting merely a canopy for several years. A canopy I say, however, at the fifth attempt, you read that right on the fifth canopy I considered it passable to consider complete. I won't say any more about my masking skills. And not looking forward to my explaining my request for three canopies to Airfix (received one replacement so far). What with Fritag's stunning Hawk build I honestly wasn't going to post this, but I think I've fixed one thing that Fritag will miss, Royal Navy markings! That and I'm feeling sympathetic to the Navy folks on here who I have observed seemed to get picked on somewhat. Airfix kit, I think Model Alliance decals, Pavla resin seats and a Master pitot probe, other out of the box. Painted with Xtracolour enamel black, only way I can get a glossy finish. On with the photos. Darren
  23. In July I started off my Spitfire collection - fittingly - with an early Mk.I here. I've decided the 2nd Spitfire for my collection should be a Mk.IIa. This specific one has quite a bit of history (the actual kit) as it hoevered over the garbage bin more than once in the past, including in this build. The first time I attempted to build an OOB Airfix Mk.Ia, but when I screwed up the pre-shading (came through the paint layers) which neccetated a complete paint strip, I lost motivation and the plane went back in the box for a few months. Later I got the Airfix Mk.I/IIa kit, and realised that if I build the early Mk.I, I can use the leftoves (coffman starter bulge etc.) to build my failed Mk.Ia as a Mk.IIa. All went well, and I didn't make the same mistake with the pre-shading this time. However in a moment of idiocy I stuck the port side decals on the starboard side, applied varnish and only then realised my mistake...Once again the Spitty got close to the bin, but I decided to keep it as a test bed for some weathering and shading techniques. On my recent trip to Australia I picked up an Xtradecals sheet with some Mk.I/Ia/IIa/IIb markings, and I decided I will once again attempt to make a decent Spitty out of this one (3rd time lucky?). Everything went as well as could be expected. Unfortuantely in the 2 complete paint and stip procedures and insane amount of not-so-gentle handling this plane went through I didn't exactly expect it to be the best kit I have done ever. In the end it turned out OK, but only after once again hovering over the bin following my screwup of the "Mountains of Mourne" decal (the last few letters can be seen jumbled up) by applying Microsol and then stupidly trying to make a last minute adjustment...yes, yes I am aware of how stupid that was. I ended up deciding to finish it, as this kit (including me) wasn't going to survive anither complete paint strip procedure. Considering the above history of this kit, I think it didn't turn out completely horrible, but feel free to judge for yourselves. The Mk.I and Mk.IIa together Thanks for looking. Next up in my collection will be a Mk.V. J
  24. Hello all This is my first completion in almost 6 months after a barren summer dominated by looking after the kids followed by a short-term loss of building mojo. Finally got my backside in gear to finish this Lightning as a Christmas present for my father in law, who used to paint Lightnings with 5 Squadron based at RAF Binbrook in the late 60s and early 70s. I wanted to do the model in a 5 squadron scheme like he would have worked on, so had to depart from my usual out of the box method. Did a bit of research online, and chose this pic to base mine on: Dipped into the aftermarket for the required 5 Squadron decals (thanks to Gary West for pointing me in the direction of the Model Alliance ones), and also pushed the boat out and went for a SAC undercarriage set, and a Montex mask for the canopy. Been wanting to try a natural metal finish for a while, so played around a bit with how to try and get some variation in the metal tones. I pre-shaded different bits of the airframe in white, grey and black to see if that would make any difference when a single shade of aluminium (Tamiya XF16) went on over the top. There are some subtle variations to the naked eye, but I'm not sure my photos really pick this up. I picked out selected panels and control surfaces in Tamiya XF56 to break it up some more. Kept the weathering light, with just an oil paint wash to lightly accent panel lines. I know there are some errors and omissions in it, but am hopeful it is a reasonable representation of an F6 from that era. Overall very happy with how it turned out (hope the old boy will be too). Thanks for looking Adam
  25. Hi folk's, a couple of new tool Airfix RAF support vehicles for you,a Standard Tilly and Bedford. It;s been a long time since I did any small scale vehicle's and it's been a breath of fresh air building these as opposed to my usual aircraft although I couldn't resist sticking one in the photo's.Easy assembly, beautifully molded and reasonably priced a 10/10 to Airfix from me.I am now busy with their Bedford QLD/T pair.Thank's for looking in.
