  1. Afternoon All, Posting up my completed Airfix Jag 1/48. Not a fan of it, went together with no problems at all, then I started painting it and everything went down hill. Pete And a group shot of my completed models:
  2. First one off the bench for 2016, Airfix new tool Wildcat. I waited for the Starter set as I preferred the colour scheme and markings in this boxing. A lovely wee kit to put together, the only fiddly bit being the gear on the gear down option, but well thought out by Airfix. Paints were Tamiya White and dark sea grey (slightly lightened) for the main scheme, and Vallejo and Humbrol for the detail bits n pieces. Decals were straight out the box, there's only about 18 of them. Weathering was with Flory's dark grey wash, acrylic washes and then pastels after the first Matt coat, these were sealed in with another light Matt coat. Only thing I'm not 100% happy with was the canopy framing, some of the paint chipped off when removing the masking, but in 1/72 I ain't going to try and touch this up! Photo's are off the iPhone so not the best, but hope you like it, it's one slightly (very, very slightly!) closer to clearing my stash! Rgds, Eng
  3. Happy new year to all! So, I've already completed my first build of the year! Well, technically I completed it about 2 days ago. And I've been building it since September. And it's 1/72 Airfix MiG-15 consisting of about 7 parts, so not exactly a speed-build record... I've been building it for a group build on another forum. I haven't shelved the Lancaster, 727 or Gnats, I'm just very busy at the mo doing uni work around actual work, so i just chucked this little kit together to keep the mojo going. It's an excellent kit, the fit is superb, not a touch of filler has gone near this model. People will criticise this model for the trench-like panel lines, basic detailing and odd dimensions, and this is all entirely justifiable, but I'm sure no one can deny the enjoyment and fun of this kit. On with the pics: Kit manufacture: Airfix Scale: 1/72 Type: MiG-15 Extras used: Brass tubes for the guns, tape for the belts. Paints and colours used: Tamiya light blue for the cockpit and wheel wells, Tamiya flat red for the red bits, Model Master Aluminium buffable for the main colour over Vallejo poly-primer, MM Stainless steel buffable for the air-brakes, Flory Grime Wash, Tamiya smoke post-shading, Xtracylix satin varnish, water-based oils for streaking. The only things I changed were the gun barrels to brass tubes, simply because I kept snapping the plastic parts, and I didn't fit the activators on the air brakes because I couldn't see how they fitted. So, there you go, thanks for looking, happy new year, and I hope your hangovers are as big as mine is!! Val
  4. Hi gang - so here's the start of this one. For the background see here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234995305-spitfire-vc-no-4-sqn-saaf-kj-z-the-blue-one/ I'm using Airfix's new-tool Vb kit combined with Alleycat's C wing resin conversion, and have some decals from MAVDecal in South Africa on the way - though I think these will be used for codes and the 'Boks only. This is my second build using this kit and third including the new tool Mk 1 from last year ( which shares many build similarities) - so with luck I hope to be able to show you a couple of solutions for the kits 2 main "talking points" namely the cockpit coaming/fuselage fit, and the UC legs attachment method. I've already started the build so the first pics will show the wings in progress. I mean, come on, it's got a trop filter, a C wing, weird camo and orange centred roundels, AND it's a Spitfire. What, ask I, to like is not? as master Yoda say might LOL cheers Jonners
  5. Hi, I have been (very) slowly playing with the Bf 109 E-4 from Airfix in 1/72 (von Werra's boxing) and I could not leave the cockpit as it is. So I have mostly scratched something that, once painted, won't look too far from reality through a canopy. And it is very likely that nothing will be visible... Damn. Isn't AMS a terrible disease? The throttle and a few other gizmos will be fitted after painting. The wings are ready, or very close to be. The radiators had the thickness of a battleship armour. Strange for a new tool Airfix kit. Well, it's a lovely kit and I am really having fun with it, even if very slowly! JR
  6. Hi I originally finished the Coyote Back in summer '15, but have only now managed to pluck up the courage to add a crew...
  7. This will be my first "big" project. Reason being, I know this kit has some shortcomings that will need to be dealt with. My first impressions upon opening the kit was the rivets all over the wings and fuselage, and apart from the control surfaces, lack of any kind of panel lines. My first task will be to sand off most of the rivets (there's a profile of the plane in the Squadron Signal book showing panel lines and rivets). Most rivets on the plane would be flushed, but I will present them like conventional domed rivets. Once done I will attempt to scribe the panel lines myself (first time attempting it). This might be a complete failure yet, so don't watch this space too closely I have set about 3 weeks aside just for this. I have not yet decided what I'm going to build either, but definitely not one of the options that came with the kit, and not a silver plane.
  8. I had a little money given me for my birthday a just before Christmas, so I indulged myself with the new Airfix Shackleton. I was off work for a month over Christmas, so this was my holiday build this year. Completed out of the box as an aircraft from 204 Squadron because (a) not I am not good at painting white and ( i am a bit of a white knuckle flyer myself!. Brush painted with Tamiya acrylics, except for the white which was from a Tamiya rattle can. Build thread can be found here. A thoroughly enjoyable build, except for maybe the white parts and the myriad of stencil decals. Thanks for looking. Inside before being buttoned up: Completed article: And compared with the Dambuster Lancaster I built last year:
  9. Finished I do like the kit it builds up quite well view from 5ft Rodders No I dont like the sand filter decals either
  10. Hi all, this is one of three vehicles for an upcoming diorama and second posting from the ready for Battle set,it was a joy to build and a great size for 1/48 scale, great fun all roun. Thanks for looking.
  11. Hi everyone, I wanted to do a project which required a lot of scratch build to compare to the other offerings (Hasegawa etc.). The Airfix kit was perfect for this since it was, 1. bare basic and, 2, extremely inaccurate. I've attempted to fix some of these inaccuracies (not all) to produce a result that is comparable to the better B-25 kits out there. In the end, I don't think I achieved this result. I did however enjoy it, and did end up with a result that an OOB Airfix B-25 cannot compare to. I also learned a lot of new skills and have already started applying what I have learned on my latest build. Please visit the WIP thread if you are interested in the build details. This is a B-25H Mitchell of the 12th BG, 82nd BS based in India 1944. This is surely a Mitchell that has not been built a lot. I did end up finding proof that this B-25 existed, though no proof of what it looked like (which also means no proof that this is NOT what it looked like ) I hope you enjoy looking at these.
  12. Another kit from the shelf of doom finished for the current KUTA group build. This sad beastie has been hanging around for awhile. I made a start, but then managed to lose the canopy (Airfix kindly sent another but it took awhile to get here) and I felt like I made a bit of a botch with the intakes. Whatever, its languished on the shelf for over 2 years. When I took it out to have a look I realised it wasn't actually too far from being finished. Brush painted with Tamiya acrylics and finished as out of the box as WZ507 operated by the Vampire Preservation Group. Build thread can be found here. Thanks for looking.
  13. Hawker Hurricane 73 SQN R.A.F. Usworth air day July 1938. In the mid thirties Britain was determined not to get embroiled in another European war even after the Munich crisis the pace of development of Britain's new generation of monoplane fighter;s was slow. The government had seen fit to cancel Gloster,s new Gladiator realising the Bi-plane was now obsolete but needed their factory and workforce for the development of an aircraft to be built around a new type of "jet" engine so as a stop gap contracted out some of the Hurricane production hence the K series serials carried over from the Gladiator orders. These early Hurricanes continued the Silver wing era until early 1940 when Britain Had to face a possible attack from the Luftwaffe which now operated from airfield's just across the channel. Well that was the idea behind the build,it was a cheap kit picked up from the local aldi and I wanter to test out Vallejo's new metal range which I have to say is superb whether Sprayed or brushed which this kit had both,Silver and dull aluminium was used, many thank,s for looking hope you like the idea.
  14. Sabre F86-E & F.4. Airfix 1:72. Sometimes I like to remember what it was like to be a kid. Cycle off to the local newsagents once a week, pocket money in hand to see what Airfix kits they had in stock. Spend ages choosing one, and then cycle back home to start the weekend build. It was hugley enjoyable, and sometimes I think we forget this. So now and then if I am in a modell shop I like to just select something off the shelf, take it home and build it out of the box for the pure fun of it. putting in th pilots as well. I like Sabres, so this one came home with me, closely followed by the RAF F.4 because I liked it so much. I couldn't quite build it 'out of the box' once I read about the corrections discussed here so I moved the wing fences & underwing tanks inboard. Also the Airfix wheels are a bit naff, and as I had an abandoned Heller Sabre build, the USAF model got those. I might get some resin ones for the RAF machine at some point. Oh, and I sanded the too low canopy frame off and polished it up, masking & painting it higher. And as I like to see the aircraft as a purer shape without the undercarriage doors hanging down, mine are crewed with the engine running and hydraulic pressure to pull them all shut. But now on with the photos! And the RAF F4, a different boxing of the same kit but with new decals; I bought some of the new Vallejo 'Metal Colour' airbrush acrylic paints at the same time. They are fantastic. I applied Halfords grey firts, followed by Tamiya Acrylic black X-1 as a base, then these. . They are very like Citadel paints and are tough, hard wearing and masking tape does not affect them at all. No pullung up of the paint whne you de-mask. I am impressed and although they are not cheap I will be using them again. Thanks for looking, John
  15. Here is my latest one I just finished. Built for my brother in law as a present for his 40th birthday. He's obsessed with Warsaw Uprising of '44 so I've decided to make him B-24 Liberator from 1586 Special Duty Flight - a Polish squadron delivering supplies for the fighting Warsaw in August and September '44 from Brindisi, Italy. Front of the plane is a little inaccurate as the Liberators from that squadron didn't have front guns but I kinda liked this side window and the guns so I've kept them. Again, some Photoshop work to blend the diorama with the background photo. Thanks for viewing. Hope you like it (and him too).
  16. Lets see if I can get one more done before the end of the month. So I had a quick tidy up of the seams, with some judicious use of Mr Surfacer 500 and then the main fuselage was ready for paint. I decided to go with WZ507, so started by putting a couple of coats of white down where the yellow was to be, and the followed up with a couple of thin coats of yellow (all brush painted Tamiya acrylics). Masked up: We are having yet another hot day here in Perth, and I know from bitter experience that that does not go well with spraying paint outside (which is what I normally do with silver finishes), so instead I decided to risk brush painting the metallic coat (flat aluminium as it happens as that was what I had to hand). Close up on the cockpit, which reminded me that I actually did have some fun with this before abandoning it. Another thin coat of Tamiya XF16 and then I removed the masking tape. Not too bad, just a few bleeds and some paint ridges that need some attention.
  17. Good evening, well, few weeks ago I finished the Tiger Moth group build, but still didn't got any proper pics. Today, I finally did it. I took the pics in one of the fancy foto cubes, I'm still trying to get used to, but it already helps a lot! Not much to say about the kit, it's a really nice one, almost perfect fitting, excellent decal sheet, and a pure pleasure to build! I think I forgot the washing, maybe I should add some dark shadows in the engine cowling where there are supposed to be some holes . Paint was Modelmaster Enamels (RAF Trainer yellow, dark earth and dark green). Rigging is stretched sprue, painted with edding. Hope you like the result! Thanks for attention, and for hosting the GB! Alex
  18. With my holiday build of a Shackleton almost done, time to clear a few others from the self of doom. Not sure why I picked this up, I think I was inspired by the build in AMW. Anyone, it has sat partially complete for the last year or more. Inspiration to complete this came about by finding the custom mix of green paint I put together to complete her. I blue tacked some lead sinkers to the bottom to give her a bit of weight. And in no time at all almost a complete tank! I think I was partly put off by the rather large sprue gates, but my newish nippers made short work of them. In the background above my almost complete Shackleton: Just some touches of paint and then the markings and weathering. Once complete, it will be my first tank!
  19. Hi all I have just bought the Airfix 1/48 WWII Ground crew set and, is it me, or are they way overscale? I put them next to some ICM figures and they dwarf them. Put next to a 1/35 figure and they don't look that much smaller. Regards Mick
  20. G-ADGT of No. 6 Elementary Flying Training School, Sywell, September 1938 - October 1939.
  21. Greetings Fellow Modellers! I submit for your perusal a pair of small, so terribly small Gnats . Both models are Airfix's newish Gnat T.1 in 1:72 scale. They represent my return to the hobby, in that on these models I let loose every experiment from which I could learn. I initially wanted to build them OOB, but I ended up using quite a bit of aftermarket stuff: the pitot tubes are Albion Alloy Micro Brass Tubes and the nose wheels are from a nice wheel update set from the Hungarian company SBS. The nose wheels make an improvement over airfix's ones which are a little bit too small. The main wheels are from the kit, and the examples left over from the SBS set will be used later for a hangar diorama. The canopy was cut with a Revell precision saw to enable it to be posed open. The interior of the canopy was lightly detailed with thin plastic card and stretched sprue. For canopy work I mostly used bookbinder's glue, which is a strong PVA type. The windscreen was made flush with the fuselage with the aid of Gunze Mr. Dissovled Putty and then Mr Surfacer 500. Same story for smoothing the side walls of the nose wheel wells. Cockpit and ejection seats were detailed with plastic card of different thicknesses, stretched sprue and very occasionally thin brass wire. Paint was basically Gunze Sangyo Mr Hobby, except Vallejo for detail work and Citadel Runefang Steel for the silver. I had lots of trouble with the H1 gloss white, which I applies much too thickly and as a result wouldn't cure well. Thanks to tips from the Tools&Tips section (thanks DuncanB ) I learned some new skills. First matt white, a coat or two, then one coat of gloss. Works beautifully. Decals were from all over the place: lots of stuff from S&M models' sheet, wing stencils came from the home printer, and the rest was basically scavenged. Please forgive the format of some of the photos, I liked the idea of imitating 1970s film, so I edited the model's images accordingly. gnat2-7 by J Goat, on Flickr gnat2-9 by J Goat, on Flickr gnat2-13 by J Goat, on Flickr gnat2-1 by J Goat, on Flickr gnat2-3 by J Goat, on Flickr gnat2-15 by J Goat, on Flickr gnat2-4 by J Goat, on Flickr gnat2-5 by J Goat, on Flickr gnat2-2 by J Goat, on Flickr gnat2-14 by J Goat, on Flickr Thanks for looking! 22. I built this one during two weeks after christmas. A relaxing build that turned out to be a little more complicated than I first thought. But just a little, this is still a great kit, pretty easy to build. Why complicated? Well, fit is great - but just almost. Almost every piece had to be a little adjusted to fit. But almost no filler was necessary, so compared to many other kits this one still had a great fit. Painted with Xtracrylics green and Vallejo aluminium. And here it is compared to Trumpeter's F.6. The main difference is the nose and the exhaust. But Lightning experts (I am not) can surely spot lots of other differences. And finally: Few planes are more situated for christmas builds.
  23. Here I present my first AFV (I normally build things with wings). Completed as part of the KUTA VIII group build (partial build thread here). Completed out of the box using the markings for the 11 Armoured Division. Brush painted with Tamiya acrylics using the recipe for SC115 found on the forums here. Found it a little fiddly in places, but enjoyable all the same. Just a bit uncertain over the antenna - they don't quite look right to me but they were all I had to hand (shoe brush bristles). I have a Tamiya 1/48 Crusader and 1/35 Matilda that I am seriously considering have a go at this year. Thanks for looking.
  24. I found this kit absolutely flawless. It was such a pleasure to build!
  25. Hi Folks, here is the result of my recent WIP thread completed on the evening of Hogmanay (New Year's Eve in Scotland). This is the Airfix 1/48 scale Messerschmitt Bf109E1 completed as White 4 of 1/JG20 based at Brandenburg-Briest in early September 1939, by the 9th of September it was operating out of Sprottau for the Polish campaign. The decals are from the Topdrawings Messerschmitt Bf109E book by Kagero however I used Montex masks for the national insignia. I wanted to try some different paints for this one and Jamie at Sovereignhobbies was kind enough to give me some Colourcoats enamels for the main colours used on this build, RLM02, RLM65, RLM70 and RLM71. I also used Mr Hobby acrylics for the darker patches where some over painting had been carried out on the real thing. WIP can be found here for more details: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234992989-airfix-148-messerschmitt-bf109e1-1jg20-sept-1939-completed-31st-december/ Duncan B
