  1. The new Airfix F3 and onwards Vampire arrived and was promptly "confiscated" by SWMBO as my Christmas present, so I don't get to see it until the 25th, but it did provoke me to dig out my 1/48th Hobbycraft Mk 1 from the Stash! My plan is to build the two in parallel, as "Out of the Box" builds and see how they turn out. This is a box review here... The F1 had very different fins and the tail plane is mounted low, this was changed for the F3 and later. The Goblin engines differed, the F1 had a 3100 lbs thrust Gobin II whilst the F3 had a 3350 lbs thrust Goblin III. I cannot find out if there were any external differences. Comparing the sprues on the Hobbycraft kit from 1993 with the photos of the Airfix ones on this forum shows just how much Airfix designers have done to make a better kit. The wings on the Hobbycraft kit are attached conventionally to the fuselage and as a result it is easy to end up with a pronounced anhedral, as this "Work in Progress" for the Hobby Craft kit explains... The way Airfix engineered the kit should mean that this error is impossible. In other reviews of the HobbyCraft kit there are comments that the exhaust end of the fuselage is "wrong". Assuming Airfix has got it right then it will be interesting to compare. The we come to the tail boom attachment. The Hobbycraft kit simply sats "stick the booms to the locating point on the back of the wing. There is a reasonable area to glue, but nothing like the positive and braced location provided by the Airfix kit. I think getting the booms secure and correctly aligned will be much easier with the Airfix kit. Although the Airfix kit contains parts for later and export versions some references suggest that when fitted with the Nene engine there were additional intakes under the fuselage. Research is essential! Enough, I'll post again once I've started comparing!
  2. This is my build of this powerful and handsome aircraft which I built from the nice Airfix 1:48 kit, Export versions. For this aeroplane, I chose the livery of the Koninklijke Marine (Royal Netherlands Navy) which in 1953 was part of an aerobatic team called AeroBats. I enjoyed very much this kit which reproduces quite well the compact and streamlined lines of this aircraft. The fit of the parts is very good and well engineered. For the Sky paint, I made of a mix of Tamiya XF-21 (4/5) with white XF-2 (1/5) while for the EDSG I chosed the Gunze 333 which reproduces this color without the need of concocting any mixture. This is the first time I use these Gunze acrylic paints and I was positively impressed by their quality. I hope you like it, best regards, Dan.
  3. Does anyone know of supplies of letters of a suitable size to do the new Airfix Tiger Moth? I’m after black suitable for the fuselage and underwing for Cambridge Aero Clubs G-AOEI and G-AHIZ, also the DH markings for the wheels if possible?
  4. Hello guys, here are thirteen photos of my most recently completed model, Airfix's 1:48 Bf 109E-4 with the markings of Franz von Werra.
  5. Finally completed, and what an effort! I started this on 1-1-17 intending it to be the build for the year. It was put onto the shelf of doom after 4 months, where it resided having killed any form of mojo. Resurrected in December and the final "push" for completion. Added parts were: Filler. Pavla resin cockpit and seats. Resin intakes and inlet blades (Kits for Cash, thanks!) and made larger intake "bullets". Airwaves wing-fold and airbrakes etch sets. Modelmaster pitot and refuelling probes. More filler. Sanding sticks, and finally, Filler. A kit that fights every step of the way. Fuselage mouldings not lining up, wing mouldings not lining up, decals that seem to have had a one-night-stand with a jellyfish and been "slimed" somehow, etc, etc. I've modified the tail-hook and recess, added a few wires into the main gear wells (really, they are in there), and moved the drop tanks inboard somewhat. airfix seems to want you to have the tank centreline almost underneath the wing hinge line... Remembered to scribe in the canopy track running down the spine behind the cockpit. I also painted the walk lines on the upper surface as it was far easier than using the decals. Some areas are brushed, bigger areas are sprayed. Yes, the intakes are white (only got that message well after the fact) 20180314_112447-1, on Flickr 20180314_112003-1, on Flickr 20180314_111945-1, on Flickr 20180314_112025-1, on Flickr 20180314_112151-1, on Flickr 20180314_112327-1, on Flickr 20180314_112538, on Flickr 20180314_112047-1, on Flickr Hope you enjoy.
  6. Hi all following on from the ‘build a Spitfire MkXXI using a PRXIX and Seafire FR46 wings’ thread, quick question. What could the ‘spare’ PRXIX wings be used for (if anything?)
  7. This is my 1st attempt at a few things, such as pre shading and the 1st completed with a "proper" airbrush. I plan to build my models without aftermarket parts tweaking where I can with items found around the house to improve the look... no after market here! This is the Airfix Supermarine Spitfire F.XVII built as No.800 Naval Air Squadron, HMS Triumph & Hal Far, Malta, 1947 OOB. The only non box extras are some masking tape seat belts and some fuse wire break cables. I've tried to not overdo the panel lines and weathering as I wanted to be a bit more subtle, sat in the sun so it's a tad lighter than Extra Dark Sea Grey on purpose, not factory fresh! But well looked after... and before anybody says flaps should be up on a parked Seafire, I know, but it does add a bit more interest IMO. The sunny weather I had this morning inspired me to get my camera out but the bright light has beached out a lot of the weathering and made the panel lines look darker than they really are. Honest. Comments welcome!
  8. Wong section... sorry... how do I delete this?
