  1. This is my attempt to build Hurricane in Soviet service. Made of Airfix Hurricane Mk.IIC 1/72 kit with some photo-etched parts of ACE production and absolutely astonishing copper fishtail exhaust tubes from Ukrainian REXx company. I've "re-armed" her with 20mm ShVAK guns and 12,7-mm BS machineguns and added RS-82 projectiles. The slogan on board means "Learn to beat the beast as Safonov!" The exaust tubes are not painted at all - here is their natural finish! Below is the only known photo of the prototype plane.
  2. Hello all! Well, I am still struggling with Illustrious (albeit gradually getting on with it) so I needed another sideshow to take my mind off things. Enter the new Airfix Typhoon. What a lovely kit it is. I had very few problems with it, but I do find that getting interiors to fit and stay stuck is a little tricky. I may have to modify the way I build things a bit, like not painting the bits first but doing so after they have been glued. The overall detail was great bearing in mind I have no references other than the instructions (my usual amount of references except for 'special' builds). Panel lines in my opinion are good, but I do use a paint brush and needed three coats of paint for the grey upper surfaces. I thought that I could not waste the detail in the gun bays, but I did limit myself to only opening one panel. My scalpel slipped when I was scoring out the panel and caused a small gash on the trailing edge part of the bay but I managed to sand that blemish out without ruining the wing. This is what I ended up with: The transfers were by Cartograph, and they settled beautifully into the panel lines after I had used three coats of Humbrol Clear (brush painted on too) and I had no silvering at all. I thought I would go for the less spectacular finish offered by Airfix - the other had a red and yellow spinner rather than the black on my choice, but I traded that for the more colourful wing roundels. The only area that really caused a snag was the spinner assembly, which when I fitted it caused the fuselage to pop open slightly. Unfortunately the plane had been painted, decalled and varnished by then! I don't think it looks too bad though. The spinner does seem slightly offset, I had one shot which really showed it skewed but for some reason that evidence seemed to have vanished into the ether and only my model club will see it. I think that Airfix are producing some fabulous models nowadays, and I have even bought a jetty thing called a Harrier by them too. I just wish their ships were as good as these are! Hope you like the Typhoon, it was an absolute joy to build. All the best, Ray
  3. Hi Britmodeller, This is my version, of the Severn Class Lifeboat 'Stornoway"at its base. The ship is moored to the jetty that is able to go up and down with the tide. Taking fresh water and electricity from the pontoon facility. Weather forecast is bright, sunny and windstill. Not much to do for the "Preiser"crew. The landing platform can take the RN/RAF Wessex or Sea King for joint ops. at sea. Wessex 1/72 is under construction. Regards, Dirk, The Netherlands
  4. Hi all, Airfix 1/72 Buccaneer built from the box with the exception of using, i think, Aeroclubs cast wheel set and seats. Painted with Humbrol Enamels. Couple of FOD guards added. Brian.

  6. Good morning all , this is my weekend build of the new Airfix Mustang. This is the F-51 boxing and I have used Aussie Decals Mustang set to represent an RAAF 77 Squadron aircraft post war.I like these new tool Airfix kits they are really good value for money. I got the kit friday started it Sunday and had it finished Monday,a nice and easy build to give me a break from my dockyard dio. I hope you like Thanks for looking Cheers Callum
  7. Good afternoon everybody Here is my last built I used a PE set for detailling the cockpit and Humbrol Metalcote brush painted , decals come from a Aims decals sheet . Uploaded with ImageShack.us Uploaded with ImageShack.us Uploaded with ImageShack.us Uploaded with ImageShack.us Patrice
  8. This 1/72 Airfix Grumman Gosling was built in a week which is a massive speed build for me. I had to make new side windows from Formula 560 Canopy glue which worked well until I decided to gloss it up with some Klear. This instantly crazed the glue windows so I made new ones and kept the klear well away from them. The undercarraige was horribly flimsy and I really doubt it would heve held the weight of the kit for long so I made new ones from brass tube plastered in primer. The "legs" for the floats were in the the same brittle state so new ones were made from brass and styrene tube. The exhausts on the fairing tops are styrene as the originals were damaged but considering the kit appears to originate around 1959 and has been reboxed a fair number of times it's actually quite a nice kit once built and apart from thin and brittle parts I had no real issues with it. So, some pics: Out of curiosity I decided to make a quick and rough (very rough) Dio with some tinfoil and black and grey Halfords spray primers. Once the primers were dry I put some white paint on a pad and just ran it across the "wave" tops then added cotton wool "spray". For such a rough and ready dio I'm actually quite happy with it and seas that colour are extremely common around Scotland... Unfortunately! "Going home": Hope you like it.
  9. Hi all, Airfix Vulcan built out of the box, xtracolour enamels used for painting. Brian
  10. Jaguar GR.1 XX111 / 01 226 OCU, RAF Lossiemouth, May 1973 I found two 1970s vintage Airfix Jaguar's in the loft recently. I was tempted to bin them on the basis that Hasegawa and Italeri do it better, but at the same time I came across some evocative photos from 1973 showing the first Jaguars delivered to the RAF so I just had to do one of those. I must say it was very nice to do an early 70s RAF scheme again - complete with Light Aircraft Grey undersides and big underwing serials. I didn't bring the old kit up to date that much - just a bit of a rescribe here and there on the wing tops. I removed the fin mounted ECM box (which was a bit oversize anyway) and re-modelled the nose with Milliput (the kit comes with the chisel nose for the laser rangefinder). The mainwheels needed thinning down to make them less square from head on. I replaced the ejection seat with a resin one and just put some basic cockpit detail in - not that any of it will be seen again in a small black cockpit behind a fairly thick canopy. Didn't really need any weathering on this one either as it is modelled a few days after delivery when the code '01' was applied (codes were from an old ED Models sheet). Deals were mostly from the kit - yes, they had survived for 35 years or so, but needed a good old soak! Most enjoyable - must dig out a couple of early Harriers and Phantoms now I've got the 70's RAF bug
  11. 12. Airfix Seahawk, built straight from the box, using kit decals. Bought on a whim on a spin down to Newcastle, as it was one of the starter sets and had a couple of quid knocked of it. Decided to use it as practice kit for trying out Halfords spraycans ,and pretty pleased how it turned out, Model was sprayed all over with Halfords white primer, then Appliance white for the undesides and Humbrol for the topside. Turned out pretty good for only my second attempt with spraycans. Only issue I had with this kit were the decals, didn't realize they were so thin, nearly translucent. They also seem to be the wrong shade, but will be changed soon enough when replacements arrive. Bought, built and displayed ,all within a week and a not too bad for a inbetweener and practice kit. As usual all comments welcome, Sean
  13. Hi all, just completed the Airfix 1/72 Short Sunderland (Another off the bucket list Campers). The kit itself is some 50 odd years old so its not up to today's modern standards but nevertheless it still makes up into a decent looking Sunderland. The kit itself is very basic as one would expect from the 50/60's Era but credit to Airfix I still reckon it stands the test of time. Brian.
  14. Hello Here is another Airfix Mustang I finished during my hollidays Decals come from an Aeromaster sheet , I used Humbrol Metalcote applied with brushes ... Uploaded with ImageShack.us Uploaded with ImageShack.us Uploaded with ImageShack.us Uploaded with ImageShack.us Patrice I love these new Airfix models ..
  15. Here's my attempt at the new Airfix Mustang. I replaced the prop with a Quickboost resin one and fashioned some louvres over the side intake grills from Magic-Sculpt and added an Eduard PE harness. The kit is lovely and goes together like a dream. Everything is very snug and barely a wiffle of putty needed anywhere. The interior is well appointed and the only thing I wasn't so keen on is the two piece canopy hood, but it looks okay. As far as I can tell it's pretty accurate and would make a IV or a D straight from the box, unfortunately the markings supplied are for a IVa or K version which needs the different Aeroproducts prop and louvres. Cheer Segan
  16. Lightning F.1 74 Sqn RAF Coltishall 1962 It was a long, long time ago that I built my first Airfix Lightning - just after it was first issued - in the plastic bag format - in the early 60s. And this is that very same model - or at least the basic airframe is. It was originally XM192 / K of 111 Sqn, of course, as provided by Airfix. I rebuilt it in the 1980s sometimes as XM175 / E of the Firebirds team (thankyou Modeldecal for those early sheets). But actually I had always wanted a 74 Sqn F.1 and at last I decided to create one. What better starting point than this 50 year old model that was really showing it's age as a 56 Sqn red fin job? After much taking apart, rubbing down, scribing, etc, I had something I could use. I left the cockpit interior plain, but used an Aeroclub seat as you can see little else. But what do do about the fin and tailplanes? The Airfix tailplanes and their attachment points were never right, so I fabricated some new tailplanes from plasticard and rebuilt their attachment points. Also the Airfix fin has always looked too small so I made up a new one, again from plasticard. Thankyou Aeroclub for your white metal undercarriage parts - but the main gear doors need to be fabricated to attach to the legs. Finish was various Alclad shades applied over polished Halfords grey primer (yes, I know - I should have used Alclad gloss black, but i just dont like the darkish finish it gives - to mee aluminium should be a light greyish silver rather than shiny and dark) - highlighted here and there with polishing powder. I then decided to put Klear over the top - I know this kind of takes the metallic edge off the finish but it does mean you can use Klear to put the decals on as per a normal paint finish. Taking the edge off the shine actually works for me - I think it looks like slightly weathered aluminium. Decals were mainly Modeldecal - the old sheet intended for a T.4 - with Xtradecal serials, codes, etc. I could go on....but it feels like time for the pics.
  17. Hi All, Airfix Sunderland MkIII on the go. Currently i'm at the decaling stage (not many). Brian.
  18. Hi all, What kind of seats did the Martin B-57B have? I am building the old airfix kit which has some quite nice details in certain areas, and other than very poor seats includes a perfectly reasonable cockpit considering the age of the kit. Were they unique to the B57 Canberra, or did they use 'off the shelf' seats? I am building in 1/72 scale so seeking any other recommendations for aftermarket too!
