  1. Hello all. Having recently completed my Airfix 1/24 scale Bf109E I thought it only right to build its fighting companion - the Fw-190. I know a lot of bad things have been written about this kit... in all the pre-build reading I've been doing I'm aware of the issues with the engine (fan) being too long, fit issues with the wheel wells and cowlings, plus the tailwheel not sitting correctly. I'm also aware of the current lack of after market parts - which is a shame because I would really like to add some metal legs and resin wheels at the very least. I've not decided which variant to do yet, or what approach I'm going to take to overcome the issues... but will decide along the way. As an example, I may decide not to show the engine and just close it all in instead. This was an auction site purchase - and important to me that the original bag was still sealed. Thankfully it was as described. Not clear from this picture but the decals have yellowed quite a bit. I've hung them up in a south facing window to see if the yellowing reduces over the build time. The instructions seem reasonably clear... Obligatory sprue shots... Anyway... as always I would welcome any advice or sources of after market parts which could be considered. Thanks for looking.
  2. Hi all, Fresh from the Hellcat STGB is the superb Airfix 1/24 F6F-5 Hellcat, converted to an FAA NF.II using Aerocraft's conversion and decal set. This is the first 1/24 kit I've ever made and it's absolutely spectacular. A really impressive piece of engineering. This is built OOB apart from the conversion and beautiful wheels from Defmodel of Korea. The fit is damn near perfect, the assemblies are complex but everything slots into place very snugly (so snugly that even a thin coat of paint can throw off the placement). The surface detail has to be seen to be believed. It's so well-rendered I decided not to do any weathering as the surface textures provide all the visual interest on their own. The kit is also very accurate, and provides different options for the instrument panel and drop tank, as well as US and British rocket stub patterns. The engine and other internals are perfectly rendered and the massive 75-page, 310-step instruction manual gives excellent clear placement details. All the cockpit placards are provided as decals, though you could also consider the Airscale replacement for additional detail. This is all OOB. Anyway...if you fancy a 1/24 scale model, this is absolutely worth the £100-odd price tag and will build up into a really impressive (and HUGE) display model. I can't recommend it enough. The very nice radar and decals conversion from Aerocraft were just the icing on the cake, it looks very smart in its Glossy Sea Blue coat and FAA roundels Here's the Hellcat STGB build thread which may help if you have our want one of these to build: Thanks for looking, Alan
  3. The Hurricane MK 1 - 1/24 by Airfix RFI Hello and a happy new year to you all. I'd like to start the new year with the RFI of my last actual completed build of 2019. She has been built for a month or so but I didn't find the right moment to do the RFI. You must excuse the sheer amount of pics once again but I do like to indulge myself sometimes. I couldn't fit her in my little photo tent thing so I took her outside and took a few shots while the sky was bright and fell in love all over again. The WIP can be found HERE and If you followed along you know how much effort I have put in to attempt to get her right, she might not be 100% but I hope that she will be useful to those wishing to build this lovely vintage kit. I used. Airfix Hurricane 1/24 Tamiya acrylics Tamiya weather powders Flory washes. Ezy line I think that was it. Without further ado Ladies and gent I give you a Massive Hurricane Mk1. Inside first I think. Phew!!!!! Now get a fresh brew maybe a biscuit and enjoy the outside shots. and the parting shot.... That's your lot..... Thankyou so much for indulging but /she is such a joy to photograph. I hope you enjoyed the build if you followed along and if not I hope you enjoyed these shots, If not I can't help you . I should now be up to date with my RFIs. I have added my meng tank and the Torino today too. I have my current Gundam kit to complete then I'll be back to Aeroplanes. ( it's a bit lonely over in sci-fi land to be fair. ) All the best and as always happy modelling. Johnny.
  4. The RFI of "Yellow nosed baskets, six o'clock high" 1/24 Messerschmitt bf 109-E by Airfix. Hi There. It's been three months in the making but after a lot of blood, sweat and stuck together fingers we have an RFI of epic proportions. It hasn't been a particularly sunny day today but I set up a little booth in the dining room and went a little bit snap happy. The build Started with a slightly drunken purchase while on holiday in the new forest, and escalated to a hell of a build. scratch built parts for the pit engine, undercarriage and bays, a lovely donated instrument panel by "Yahu" and some camo masks sent by "top notch masks for models" Thanks guys. Thank you to Everyone who contributed and sent photo ref during the build, Too many to mention but you know who you are and again my greatest thanks. The build got it's name from @TonyTiger66 who mentioned this film. And who could resist ? not me that's for sure. During the build I found some info about the real yellow 9 here. http://www.aviationmuseum.co.uk/109.htm and @tango98 sent me amongst other really helpful words and pictures this report. "Report No. 3/162 Me 109 Crashed on 15.11.40 at 11.30 hours at Horndon-on-the-Hill, Essex Map Reference: M.1002. Markings: not known. The cause of the crash is presumed to be fighter action. Pilot baled out. Aircraft dived into ground at speed and is almost completely buried. Evidence of M.G.17’s in wings and armament therefore presumably 4 M.G.17’s. Bomb rack for one 250kg bomb traced. Pilot prisoner. No further details possible." This turned out to be the point where I had to build a bomb rack and 250kg bomb for our lovely lady. After much effort we are here today with a final model. I'll stop rattling on and get on with the good bit. May I present the "Airfix 1/24 Messerschmitt BF109-E" with extra stuff. And that's all folks. She was airbrushed with Tamiya acrilycs and weatherd with a hairy stick and various weathering pigments and pencils. I think she turned out quite well. I hope you enjoyed the WIP as much as I did. if you didn't see it you can find it here Thanks again for all your help and interest and I hope you'll join me in me in my next build that can be found here. Take care and I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. Take care and most of all...... Happy Modelling Johnny boy.
